I'm at Brisbane, and can get no revolutions from the engines.

I went back to a previous save, re-ran the whole patrol, and was given the same "automatic anti-air platform" upgrade. I fitted out the boat again, same result.

I immediately re-docked in harbour, giving myself a "zero" for that patrol, re-fit the boat and when I was given new patrol orders had the same result.

I looked back in the forums and saw this error has happened before, and I have tried to 'change' some choices to avoid the glitch, but to no result.

Do we know what exactly causes this glitch? I don't mind starting all over, but I sure as heck don't want to play again if its just going to lock up after 5 patrols again.

I remember someone mentioning upgrades and dates. And the problem was circumvented by spending a week or two more at sea before returning to port. Or something along these lines.
Did you try this?

I remember that post - they'd been given the upgrade before it was historically due, so I think they reloaded the previous save and went on a grand tour before docking, which reportedly did the trick...

And this is the thread

Ok, the short story is I got it going again, and indeed time seems to be the solution.

I went to my last save before docking in Brisbane, fortuitously just at Brisbane. I set off on the suggested 9 day pleasure cruise, then returned to Brisbane. It was October 29, so I decided to wait to dock until November 1 on the possibility that that might have been chosen as a key transition date. Imagine my surprise then when on October 30th I am informed that all S-18 class are instructed to redeploy to DUTCH HARBOR!! So, I went from one pole to almost the other in - oh, 3 weeks I suppose.

It was a noteworthy transit too- chanced upon a TF at night 100nm SE of Truk, and I stumbled into it with amazing luck. Perfect set-up, dive to 150 feet, rise to periscope as the last escort rolls over, and I see 2 Kongos & a Hiryu. I put 4 into the carrier at 1100 yards, it sank in 4 minutes.

Anyway, I re-based, and was able to go on another patrol. Sadly, that Brisbane glitch offered a lot of stuff. Not just equipment, but promotions. I must have made 12 guys Petty Officers before, but up in Dutch Harbor I could only promote 1 person, an Ensign to Lt JG.

Anyway (x2) it seems to be working now. That's an awful glitch though, it really makes you feel powerless. :\ I wish there was a fix, just in case it crops up again.

Thanks for the advice, it worked. Much appreciated. :smug:

Good to know.

I wonder if the equipment glitch was due to a mod you were using? Are you running any?

These are the mods I'm using, though I've been told its not the best order to have them installed in. If there was a rationale to indicate that the order of install was responsible, And if the 'cannot comply' recurred again, then I might strip them out and re-install them.

So we are all forwarned, what year did this occur?

1942. My guess is it stems from running unusually long patrols, and that the game says "X" refits happen at a certain time, and another part of the game isn't ready for it. That, or its just something with Brisbane as a base.

I was thinking it might have to do with the S-class being withdrawn from active service, or redeployed to the Aluetians, meaning the date is the critical factor.

I plan to play again with the Narwhal, but I'll keep better notes on everything the next time through.

I just got this bug. I was out on patrol from Manila on 26DEC 1941, ran a bit long and Manila was overrun, heading to Java to end my patrol, but suddenly I have a "cannot comply" and my engines refuse to run. Date is currently 12JAN 1942.

Hmm. You had your error occur far earlier than I did. For me the solution was to load last save, and then stay out an extra 3 weeks to transfer up to Dutch Harbour, which orders come down on November 1 of '42.

Did you notice some unusually nice upgrades being offered just beforehand, or was it just a long 1st patrol? If that error has happened so early, I'm not sure how you should proceed. :/

You haven't gone into TC with the crew at battle stations have you? Eventually, if you do, they'll collapse from exhaustion and you'll get the "Cannot comply" message, I'm told.....

Well, that's embarrassing.
