Extending Air Search Radar

Does it increase it's range by extending it when you are surfaced?

My experience with TMO/RSRD says "No". The air search radar seems to work the same with or without the antenna raised.

What DOES make a difference in apparent detection range is the size of the target. Depending on which radar you have (SD vs. Improved SD) you may detect an Emily at 15 miles, but any AGM model at only 5 - 8 miles. The closer the initial detection the smaller the target.

I usually extend it, if I am forced to surface during daylight hours, because I did something stupid, like forgetting to reduce speed after diving. Which can really become a very dangerous whoops to say the least.
