I've always felt that automatic ship recognition is sort of cheating. I mean: our WO is always giving us the correct answer, even during the darkest night or with the heaviest fog, making the use of the recognition manual almost dispensable. I wonder if it would it be possible to add a percentage of error dependig on:
time of the day and moon phase
weather
officer's experience
officer's morale
Of course the officer should equivocate between ships more or less of the same type and tonnage (a merchant with a merchant, a corvette with a corvette, etc.), and should remark his degree of conficence with phrases like:
It is a ...., sir
I am quite sure it is ..., kaulen
It seems a ..., captain, do you want to have a look yourself?
I am not sure captain, but it could be a ...
I am sorry sir, I can hardly see it
