View Full Version : No depth charges?

I finished my first TMO 2.5 + RSRD patrol. "S" boat from Manila, Dec 41

I found a convoy close to Aparri, Philippines, and proceed to do a submerged attack; I managed to sink a 8,000 tons freighter, and then ordered crash dive to 250 feet and then silent run to wait for the escorts

I heard the DDs pinging and closing, but I could not hear any depth charges at all, so here comes my question:
is it possible that the escorts did not carry depth charges? maybe since it was very early in the war? or maybe they threw very far away, but that is unlikely since I heard them pinging/ passing very close to my position

is it possible that maybe some escort types do not carry DC?

thanks

More likely, they just didn't get a solid fix on your location.Really, any ship that has echo-ranging equiptment, would have depth charges. At the beginning of the war, you would expect many of their crews will be inexperienced. Since you are playing TMO, I would consider myself lucky. :DL

I have found even in TMo and esp when running RSRD with TMO most escorts are no real threat when you are submerged unless in shallow waters. If seas are heavy, forget it.This of course is in early war only.

:yep: To both the above posts. The likelihood is that they were noobs and just couldn't find you. Just because they are pinging doesn't mean they're getting a return signal.

Why question luck? :D

yes, that's true, never question luck :)

I also noticed that planes are now a big threat; I got (minor) damage 3 times; the first one at the surface (maybe friendly fire? I was in Philippine waters in very early Dec, well before the Japanese invasion started, so I decided not to dive... big mistake). The other 2 times obviously while trying to dive as fast as I can.

Another comment; with TMO you consume fuel while at 0 knots.. which eliminates the exploit of parking your sub at the patrol area for 96 hours
