It is probably because the site is a google site. I password protected it yesterday so that only Donitz Flotilla (you) members could access it. Try letting it direct you to Google sites and use your gmail account to get in. First time I have done this so let me know how it works.

How to handle the given enigma code-sheet?

A valid enigma message should look like this:
......................
26 December 1943 / 1058 / BdU / ??? / ADO PHO

KENNGRUPPE / REACHED ASSIGNED PATROL AREA. NO TRAFFIC . REQUEST
FURTHER ORDERS / U538 ENGELHAUPT / KENNGRUPPE
......................

The Header (Date / Time / Receiver / Number of Characters / Encode Key)
is not crypted, the MAIN TEXT (Kenngruppe / The text you want to transmit / Signature / Kenngruppe) is crypted. "Kenngruppe" will be the one, choosen from the codesheet, that fits the date and time of the header(!).

Given that for each day we have 4 Kenngruppen and the procedure to choose the correct one is that the Kenngruppe is valid for a period of six hours, starting on 00:00 hour, so the first Kenngruppe must be used from 00:00 until 06:01, the second one is valid from 06:01 until 12:00, the third one from 12:01 until 18:00 etc. how should we handle the given codesheet for Feb2012 here?
(1)
We must create for each month a separate codesheet - from Sept 1939 - until April 1945 -.
(2)
Or we agree to let the time the message was posted on Subsim.com decide, which Kenngruppe was used. But the fact that different users have different time-zones and differnt time-displays we must further agree to set a certain time-zone (in the user-cp) for all enigma-users.
(3)
Or we post the used "Kenngruppe" in the header.

Since with the "enigma codebook tool" codesheets for a whole year are created within seconds i suggest to go for option (1). Because thats historical correct.

Header Example:

0123039/ To=BDU/From=U-345/Letters in message/57/kennegrumptions= ????/????/???/???? (or whaterer)

but still working on this format

this format much closer the original ones

message body is correct but signature is not necessary

monthly code sheets will arranged by B.d.U every month

and the time-zone is a real problem between flotilla member u referred a good point with this issue

working on embossing the eagle now, trying to refurbish the one i worked with - its old and looks tarnished, trying to give it a more gold -- after touching up the color and embossing it ill put it on the emblem and start detailing the wolf

something to note, while using print screen you can only take one screenshot at a time, every time you press the button it overwrites your previous picture

so alt tabbing to cntrl+V [paste] your screenshot is the only way to avoid from doing that, that I'm aware of...that or third party software

OK... I have been playing through the tutorial and actual targeting in combat and am lucky to get a hit on the stern of a moving target. i go through all of the procedures, even recalculating the speed (15seconds plus) and I can't get the hang of it. I used to be a Navy Officer so I am trained on target angles (angle off the bow) and have become very familiar with the identification process so the ships are correctly identified.

All my shots seem to pass behind the target. I can't seem to alter the angle off bow or manually increase the speed to get the torpedo to adequately lead the target. I have looked for cheats etc on the net and have not found anything helpful.

HOW DO YOU GUYS DO IT AT 100% REALISM?!

I'm using the speed derived from the notepad (locking on the ship for 10-15 seconds). I am not sure what you are refering to with the 3 min 15 sec rule.

"distance traveled (in meters) in 3 minutes 15 seconds divided by 100=speed in knots.(EX: 700 meters in 3:15=7 knots)"

another method is to wait till the target ships bow crosses your verticle crosshair, and start a timer [dont move your periscope during this] and wait till the ships stern crosses the line and stop the timer, next you pull up the recongition manual to check the ships length - lastly you plug in all the numbers into this equation, you're sum is the target ships speed

Ship Length in Meters * 1.94) / Time in Seconds

thats just one method of many [i use the timer from bow to stern with an AOB wheel I input everything into]
So......does that mean that I have to use the TDC in addition to the solution on the notepad? The game tutorial leads one to believe that all you need is the notepad in the upper right hand corner.

Negative, you don't need the TDC to calculate any of these, the AOB wheel i use goes around my attack periscope, it doesnt come stock with GWX or vanilla, and even then its not a must, it just speeds things up for me [i use H.sies acm reloaded GUI]

How do you make changes to the notepad speed calculation or input the speed from calculations you have made with wheel / crosshair etc?

To input calculations i do use the TDC [the miniature version thats on the right of my attack periscope] -- the notepad for finding speed is non existent with my GUI, i HAVE to do the 3.15 marks or the timing method from bow to stern - there are a few more methods for manually finding speed, but those are the two i use [depending on targets range and AOB]

when i said the TDC is not needed, i meant its of no use for me when trying to calculate the ships range, AOB, or speed - i use it purely to enter those settings as i get them

Dear OLC Mod user Flotilla members,

I have some questions about OLC mod, I want to try it but I don't know how to install and where to find.

1. Where can i find the latest version ?

You can download it from subsim downloads. It is compatible with GWX but not compatible with some GWX mods. I would use JSGM to uninstall all mods then install OLC to your SHIII Mods folder and then activate it via JSGM. You can then activate your other mods and let JSGM tell you if they will work.

There is a learning curve with OLC. I think he did some video tutorials but I dont know where they are.

"" Downloads:

Get MkIIc from the SUBSIM downloads section (here (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=997)). An upgrade from MkIIc to MkIId is available at my FF page (here (http://files.filefront.com/OLC+Gold+MkIId+Update/;13909129;/fileinfo.html)).

If you're new to this mod:

There's a download in the SUBSIM download section called "OLC GUI Video Tutorials" (here (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=1112)) which explains how to use my GUI. Be sure to read the description text on the download page as it contains some things that were not covered in the videos.

Compatibility:

OLCG2 is not compatible with the Malfunction and Sabotage options in SH3 Commander. Please make sure those options are disabled.
I strongly recommend the use of makman94's TMT Mod (here (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=153937)) with OLCG2.

OK....I've tried it a couple of times and still no luck. First off I start by finding the image I want in the game and press prt scr on my keyboard. Then I open mspaint, press ctrl v to capture the image in mspaint. Then i convert the image to jpeg and save it to my desktop. Then I open imageshack and upload the image save it to my images. I access my images and press on the direct link which opens up another window. I cut and then paste the url for this window to my message (after pressing the little yellow mountain) in the box which asks for it. It appears there in full and then I press OK and then send the message..............NOTHING!

The size I have selected for the message is the size for e-mails. Does this matter?

Try adding the tags manually to the 'direct link' of the picture you want - [IMG] direct link goes here

the little mountain with a yellow background just adds the IMG tags to whatever link you provide, though i dont know why it would be vanishing when you go to post

Well.....

After a year and a half of looking I finally pulled the trigger on purchasing a boat! And what a boat she is! I took delivery today on a used Campion allante 18 foot runabout. I just got back from her maiden run on Lake Pend Orielle here in north Idaho. What a rush! It was a bit stormy and she took the waves beautifully. I know...just a hole in the water to pour money into...but being out on the water is absolutely wonderful. Simply to take her out for a couple of hours, stopping in the middle of the bay and just listening to the lapping of the waves is just indescribable. Tomorrow I fuel her up and take her down the lake.

By the way, her name is.....DAS BOOT! Pictures to follow.

What exactly is the rationale for using those grids rather than the historical marinequadrante?

Would love to do that but having a good copy of the Krigsmarine World Grid system is above my pay scale. The other problem is that it does not always correspond to the SHIII game map so I think it is confusing.

If you can put the two together so the Flotilla can understand it it would be appreciated. I am not a big fan of the one we are now using.

So IMO, after completed patrol, we should attach to the BdU a screen with allied/neutral/friendly tonnage sunk, to get some penalty for friendly/neutral fire.

Had shoulder surgery this past Wednesday. It was supposed to be a simple matter of cutting the biceps tendon. When the doctor got into my shoulder...surprise!...about three times the damage shown on the MRI. So I got a snipped tendon, a repaired tendon and a reattached tendon. Instead of a simple week in a sling and taking it easy for a month, I get total immobilization for four weeks, a re-evaluation and then at least six weeks of tortur...er...therapy. And to top it all off...my pain meds make me feel feverish and sick. I'm weening myself off of the nerve block. So far so good. But a couple of days ago...yikes! That was some intense pain.

The lake here is the largest lake in the US outside of the Great Lakes. It's 50 miles long, shaped like an ear thus the name Pend Orielle (ear pendant in French). At it's deepest spot this glacial lake is, no kidding, 1120 feet deep. I have a 40 minute run to the prime fishing grounds from my location. I'll see if I can take some pictures to share.

Hey everyone......

There is a bit of confusion for Bruno Borat. There are two sets of patrol orders floating out there. I assigned myself a patrol and so did Laufen Zum Ziel. It happened because there are two threads for U101 Patrol Orders.

Since the staff is sharing the work load in assigning patrols I recommend a simple solution. Staff members should not assign themselves patrols. We need to depend on other staff members to send us in harms way...just like the other captains. So I will be honoring Laufen Zum Ziel's orders.

Fred aka Kurtz aka Borat.

If you take a look at U101's War Diary you'll see an example of character role play. My "character" Borat commands U101. He comes from Khazakstan and is a MORON! If you've seen the movie you know just how much of a moron he is. In this thread you have the freedom to develop your character. You can go historical or like me go for a laugh or two. Be creative. Maybe your character becomes a sort of alter ego of yourself; or perhaps the Mr. Hyde to the Dr. Jeckel that everybody knows.

As Borat would say..."is nice....yes."

No more 84% realism for me. I've been at this too long for that. I would like to make a fresh start all the way back in 1939 with a new character and new type IX boat.........Therefore, Bruno Borat has transferred to a shore post. His boat U101 drops out of our active list.

My new character is Theodor Kaczynski........yes, that's the name of the Unabomber but I think he would have made a particularly colorful character and the ideal type IX commander. He begins his career in 1939.

OK, here's a question. Does anybody ever have trouble getting your boat to answer a flank bell? In other words does your game restrict your speed to around 13kts for no apparant reason? This happens occasionally to me. After a time the boat behaves normally again. It's very annoying when you start out on a chase and you don't have the necessary speed to run down that slow merchant. Is this a "built in engineering casualty or break down?"

Well...It's a bit embarrassing to admit...but...it took me over 15 years of sub gaming to embrace 100% realism. I've owned SHIII from the very beginning. I mean I bought a UK version as soon as I possibly could back in the day and I never used 100% realism...until now. I would toy around with it but never got the hang of it until I discovered that the data that I observed and input from the periscope or surface sight screen needed to be checked and usually modified on the display of the TDC. WOW! I have a whole new excitement for this fantastic game of ours!

It's changed how I play to a more realistic way. It actually takes some time to get the solution, time that the periscope is visible and the boat is vulnerable. Gone are the days of the instant quick shot while being pinged by a destroyer. It forces you to think more defensively. Great deal!

I'm currently about 30 miles east of the Cape Verde Islands heading north. After battling really foul weather and trying every deep water approach to Freetown......All I saw were neutral ships and patrol craft. I'm proud to sacrifice this patrol on the altar of campaign realism. Truth be told...sinking five or six or even more ships per patrol was a really rare occurrence. The vast majority of U-boat patrols yielded little or no contact with the enemy. It hasn't happened to me that many times before but at least I can say that I'm "keepin it real!"....Who knows, maybe my luck will change the closer I get to Gibraltar.

This is strange. It hasn't happened to me.
I am playing at 100% with no map updates but I usually run into one convoy there. Of course that means , staying more than two weeks in the area.

But as you say "an ode to realism" : it is not always the same.

Actually, I think it is the year in the war that is making the difference. Late 1939 and very early 1940 may not have been the best years for the southern convoy / shipping routes. It stands to reason that Britain was in the middle of re-organizing their logistics systems during the time of the sitzkrieg. Things might not really get interesting around Freetown until the Spring or Summer of 1940. By the way, I was in the vicinity of Freetown from 04 December 1939 to around 07 January. I did see two convoys...both neutral gaggles of Brazilian ships.

Maybe it's an idea to add waypoints to patrol orders in some cases. That way it becomes possible to avoid high patrolled areas and/or with lot of allied air cover.

For example last time I had to patrol AM19 last time(1942):

Order AM19. Allowed to use the following grids as waypoints inbound and outbound to patrol area: BF42 and AM77.

or

Order AM19. Must use the following grids as waypoints inbound and outbound to patrol area: BF42 and AM77.

or

Order AM19 (as it optional to add waypoints and up to Bdu to do so)

Let me know what you think.

As we all know the majority of u-boat successes against shipping in convoy occured at night. I have, for eight years now, tried the Kretchmer tactics (submerging in front of the convoy, drifting in silent mode then surfacing within the convoy and then attacking) and no matter what year of game play I get zapped by armed merchants. Does anyone out there have some advice on night surface attacks?

Fred.

Laufen zum Ziel

I have never tried a frontal attack. I usually plot a course ahead of the convoy and then go quiet at 600 to 1000 m from the convoys projected rout at 90 degree angle. When the escourt passes I rais periscope and select my target and fire two torpedoes, select another target and fire two torpedoes. I then run like hell.

VONHARRIS
04-17-2013, 02:15 PM
As we all .....

I don't think there is a solution to that.
In SH3 world , once you are spotted by an armed enemy vessel you come immediately under fire , which sometimes can be very accurate!

Have you tried the H.sie's and Stieblers add on?
There is a fix there that reduces the vampire vision of enemy vessels.
I use it and it is working

On the other hand I do not dare to infiltrate a convoy and surface in it after early 1942.
Medium (to long) range torpedo attacks are safer.

I'm planning to play some early war patrols too and try the surface attacks. I never tried while using the h.sie patch.

It's not like I got tired of being sunk in 1942 and 1943 (and quick too). Attacking heavily defended convoys proved to be suicidal the way I did it and way I have sh3 tweaked. Next time I need to use different tactics. And wait until I can get albrich and even better a Type VIIc41, before doing something too dicey. At least I found out that radar warning can be tweaked and modded to simulate almost a 100% (if you are a fan of the black may thing, like me :haha:).

About what you where asking Fred. I think you should not try to surface in the middle of a convoy when it consist of armed merchants. You got to expect to be spotted very soon not only because of the close proximity but also you will get silhouetted and moonlight reflection.

The way I understand is kretchmer only did this when the convoy was attacked by a wolfpack and the escorts were mostly distracted by the other u-boats attacking from outside the convoy. He did this as you know because that way he could attack from point blank range.

If you don't attack in a wolfpack I would say that it's better to attack from the sides of the convoy because that way you can often remain undetected. But it depends on the circumstances, less moonlight and clouds should be better.

Vince82
05-18-2013, 04:16 PM
Let me start out with saying that U-97 has regained contact with the convoy. But how that works out I'll will see tomorrow.

The convoy battle (well one uboat vs the monster as I was ordered to attack alone). Dolphins and black swans circling around me and depth charges falling down. Yes, exactly when I got depthcharged by two black swan class sloops, I get dolphin sounds on my hydrophone.

“I do not believe that ever in the history of war, men have been sent against the enemy with such a useless weapon” Karl Donitz

As early as late 1939 it became known that the TI and TII had problems. Those problems continued until completely new pistols (both impact as magnetic) were developed and the TIII was introduced.

-Both TI and TII on magnetic pistols were known to detonate prematurely giving away position (discovered around november 1939).
-Both had serious impact pistol failure (this was discovered april 1940).
-Even though the TII didn't leave a bubble trail it had depthkeeping problems (this was discovered april 1940) the TI didn't have this problem.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Orders were given by the Bdu regarding the use of torpedoes:

1 ~'Don't use magnetic pistols' (this means you have to swith it off) An exception would be that you're already detected.

2 Mid 1940 this was changed to ~'Use mostly TI's and on magnetic pistol, unless carriers or destroyers/DE are near', because TI had reliable depth keeping and at that time it became clear that the impact pistol was even more unreliable than the magnetic pistol.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm planning to research this a bit further and start a thread about it, because it would be interesting if we would make this kind of a simulation available as an option within our flotilla.

Let me know what you think.

I still have success with getting ahead of the convoy, submerging to periscope depth, running silent then making a low speed approach on the nearest high value target(s) and launching as many eels at as many ships as I can. I then head for the basement at high speed, drop to slow speed and silent and move off 30 or 40 degrees off the reciprocal of the convoy course.

The 2nd 'order' was given for not more than 2 month I think. The submarine HMS Seal was captured on the 5th of May and the impact detonator from its torpedoes was 'copied'. From June onwards to late 1942 that detonator was used (ironical for sure).
Most torpedoes used during the early years didnt even have a magnetic pistol or modified in such a way that only the impact pistol would work.
