The Makassar Strait between Borneo and Celebes is an excellent maritime bottleneck at almost any point in the war. It's narrow especially along the equator and easy to cover.

Yeah, from any australian port that you may be based on, they are very close to each other. Since you're there, you can always try both.

There are several shipping lanes that converge in the Celebes and it's one of my favorite hunting grounds for merchant shipping. One lane runs North/South along the Philippene coast and down the west coast of Celebes. Then they also turn East/West at roughly the mid line of the Celebes sea. You can catch shipping East/West in the Davao gulf area going to/from the Sulu sea or East/West off the North shores of Celebes heading to/from the Makassar strait. It should be a hot area in the early years of the war.
