Nailed the Kongo as the Sealion did in November 1944(pics)

November 21, 1944 on patrol in Formosa Straits, made radar contact on a TF just after midnight, TF was moving fast, moonlight was heavy and my radar warning equipment was barking so decided for night scope attack.Plotted so would be fairly close inside the screen.Raised the scope to find the TF consisted of several BB's(including Yamato Class, Fuso and Kongo) in addition to a Agano CL and several escorts.The Kongo was my best chance so went after it....fired all six fish at the Kongo which was making 16 knots, all hit and let her a burning wreck, she eventually capsized and sank! Had two Mark 18's in stern tubes, fired them a the Fuso(was next in line and came close) both hit but the big battlewagon kept going.The others headed away while the escorts hunted, a few depth charges but due to the heavy seas and a thermal layer, I escaped any harm.


Note:This is was the Battleship Division that left Brunei on 16 November 1944 for Kure, Japan.USS Sealion encountered this group around 0200 on 21 November 1944 in Formosa Straits...the Sealion(Balao class) under Lt Cdr Eli Reich sank the Kongo.Pretty cool find, I wondered if it would come through on time and it did.

Good job, great pictures, it is always good if the weather is bad in this kind of situation where you can get away without any DD, who is in a bad mood, even if it is a bit tougher to aim :up:

Funny, I just listened to the live Sealion recordings of that attack on the Kongo the other day.

Never tried to listen with the headphones. Listen to the attack on the Oiler as well. From the sound of it, it must have been an intense explosion.

Great shot. High-speed targets are always the harder to hit. BBs having long profiles does not help much when they are close to 20 kts or higher.

I don't know much about being an admiral but all ships in this task force should be able to be cruising faster than 25 or maybe 30 knots. Very stupid of them to be in a speed in which a sub could be screening them.

Burning wrecks are always a pitiful sight, regardless of them being the enemy (sigh...)
