It was early September 42, and now that I started a new career with much more knowledge on how TMO and RSRD work and with some help from some great members, I am on my way down south in my new Gato..

I know oct 17th-20th there is a huge task force 3.5e 161.20s, so I decide to rape some bases or at least patrol the outskirts.. Luck must of been on my side because after I sunk 3 merchants I ran into a small task force heading for port and my luck it was 6 Heavy cruisers.. I managed to sink 2 of them..

Knowing now my Oct date for the big task force is coming soon, I quickly refit and head to my location..

I took some heavy damage on the way ( I took off Easy A.I. that I had installed TMO) and now I have about 40% damage on the hull thanks to some 4 engine bombers, but all systems are still working (after some heavy patch jobs) so I decide to go ahead with the task force..

I spot the force, and quickly head to Periscope depth.. I sit and wait and again, luck will have it, I am in a perfect shooting solution position for a Kongo battleship at my bow and a carrier at my stern.. I have a mix of Mark 10's and 14's (crappy duds) and shoot all 6 at the kongo and all 4 at the carrier.. Again, luck has it, all but 2 (1 for each) hit.. and with both my front and rear having serious explosions going on, my system is lagging, I had a huge grin on my face :) as they both sank with quickness..

finally, things are working out for me..

but I couldn't get my torps loaded in time, so I let the remaining victims run along.. I surfaced and decided to chase.. After a good 2 hours, I got back into position, and I guess it was time, but my luck ran out.

I got spotted some how? I forgot to shut my secondary machines off, my guys were begging for the A/C to be on, due to me asking for double shifts :) so I forgot to go silent :)

I now have 3 destroyers taking turns dropping their cans on and all around me.. I am playing with depths of 250-400 feet.. Knowing with my previous damage I could pop at anytime, I keep asking.. I had a GREAT patrol, one of the best, more so than my years of GWX.. Did I push the envelope to much? I still had plenty of fuel and a new load out of torps, I felt it would be stupid not to push for more targets..

So now I am on Pause, taking a break, maybe read up some more on SIlent Victory, maybe get a technique or two :)

So I ask.. How much do you guys press your luck? .. This is of course you play dead is dead, because we could always reload a saved game

I play "Dead iis Dead" too, and therefore am much more cautious with the lives of my men. Still, I can't say I've had any disappointing patrols, except for some "Failure To Load" errors after some pretty successful warship sinkings. I've recently been experimenting with long range attacks after some unexpected earlier successes and, I must say, I'm getting pretty good at it. It's a lot safer too.:D

You want to really play 'Dead Is Dead' (well, not really, but still over the top)?

Promise yourself that if you die, you put the game away and don't play it for a year.

Then see how far you're willing to "push your luck". :D

you "pushed" your luck when you continued operations with 40% less hull integrity,
you "expended" you luck when you sunk the BB and the CV
when you went "in" the TF for the second time you luck was running on fumes!

I can't think of a better way to really calculate how much real captains evaluated "pushing their luck". They were under real orders. They really died and paid a very high price for failure. We play under fake/imagined orders and pay a very low price for failure. This is why we get so many kills per patrol than the real captains did. If we had to pay a higher price "cannot play your favorite game for a year", I'd bet we'd think twice about jumping into the thick of things too.

I really try to play dead is dead, but I'm sure I push my luck way more than any real like ego maniac skipper would. I use to not save when leaving port, but will now save when I get to where I'm patrolling, never save in battle. I once played dead is dead for over a year. If I died, career over, start another. It was hard to make it several times to 1944 or early 45 and get killed. I wanted to see the end of the war once, so I finally used a save. My rule now is, if I make 5 patrols, I can use one save to continue if I die. In reality no skipper did 40 patrols.

This report of my last battle. Chased a large TF over 300nms. After my first attack the only way to catch it was run on the surface as it was going fast. Planes attacked non stop. My last end around at dawn I was in position, no battery charge, 50% damage and only 3 torps left..but I wanted that Kongo I had listing.

The only real way to know what the men went through is the shotgun mod. You connect a shotgun to your USB port that reads the game., it's pointed at the back of your head, you die, it goes off...Now, how would you play then...laughable, but that's what they really dealt with.

If this was a pay to play game.. Each career you need to pay... lets say 100.00 bucks.. and if you die, you need to pay another 100 bucks..

That would be a cool.

Sort of ironic that I just logged on to find this thread. I was on the second patrol of an Alaskan campaign (TMO +RSRD). I was stalking two freighters off the Aleutian islands. Only one small aux sub chaser escorting. The chaser had put me under a few times with depth charges to follow each time.

As I came to periscope depth to take a shot at the freighters for the third time the chaser beared down on me as I took another shot. On about the 4th time he did this I went deep (in an S-42) to about 310 ft. Either he was really good or it was a lucky depth charge but he got me. There was no salvaging it. Gauges began breaking and water rushed into the control room. Down, down, down she went. It was all over at about 375 ft.

I won't be reloading that save. Dead is dead.

I play "dead is dead" as well, also try to play as realistic as possible.I take calculated risks and push it to a reasonable point.I decide what that point is based on the current situation.

I am by no means a conservative skipper and my tonnage reflects that but I do play as if though lives are in my hand.The decisions it forces you make provides for some interesting gameplay, for sure.
