View Full Version : Changing detonation distance for starshell

Basically, I'm looking for a way to change the distance at which starshells detonate. I'm running the Warship mod, but often I will run into a contact at night that I can't see because it's too dark out. The Starshells are useless because whenever I use them, they travel a good 6 km before activating. So, I was wondering if there is a way to change the detonation range to something like 2 km from my ship.

The distance is controlled in the particles.dat
If memory serves me correctly.

Thanks for your help. It wasn't in that file, but it did lead me in the right direction. Okay, if you want to edit the range at which your starshell detonates, you'll want to look in your "Shells.sim" file using Silent 3ditor. You can find the file in the data/library folder. The entry you want is in the 90s. Unfortunately all the entries have the same title, so you'll have to search manually. when you double-click on an entry, a sub-entry will show up. Click on the sub-entry, and you'll see a Property Tree show up on the right side of 3ditor. In the Property Tree, you'll see an entry entitled "Detonation." Double-click on "Detonation" and it will open up, showing range and effect. For Starshells, it should read something like:
The effect number is critical, as that is the number for the starshell effect, and lets you know you're modifying the starshell. The range is how far the shell will travel before detonating. In stock Silent Hunter 3, the range is 1800 meters. So, change the range to a number you like and save. Now your starshells will blow at a useful distance.
