View Full Version : So this may be a stupid question, but....

When you ping a target for range, can/do enemy DD's hear it and start honing in? I've tried it a few times, but never really gotten conclusive results.

Thanks

No that is not a stupid question.

While in real life, the DD would probably pick up the ping, what happens in real life and what is coded in a video game may be quite different.

Does anyone know for sure if SH4 stock was coded to allow DDs to pick up pings?

Can the developers of the major mods comment whether their mods are coded to allow DDs to pick up pings?

....but could still be a coincidence. I distinctly remember two missions when I pinged a merch after the DD had passed me only to have the DD come barrelling back in my direction. I can't say for sure the ping "attracted" the DD's attention but needless to say, LOL, I've refrained from doing it again around warships just to be safe!!!! :D

I just noticed that when you hover over the "estimate range" button in the sonar menu (TMO 1.9 + RSRDC) you are presented with the message that this action "might attract the attention of enemy warships in the area". That still leaves some gray area, but at least there is some indication that, yes they can hear your pings... kinda makes hunting during low visibility conditions all the more interesting...

I also can't say for sure, but recently i pinged for depth under keel while near a convoy and its escorts started heading right towards me. Since then i treat active sonar as detectable, but i really don't know.

I would assume the Devs would have thought about pinging and set it up for an enemy with hydrophones could trace pings, but since this is UBI, who knows?

See I've had the opposite experience, at least with depth pings... I've been in a situation where I was under a convoy in 200ft of water (stupid I know...) and I had to keep pinging to make sure I didn't run aground while positioning for my shots. The enemy DD's never even bothered with me until the first torpedo wake hit the surface, then all hell broke loose... and yes, I did die...

Escorts don't notice this (along with depth pings) in sh3, and as far as my experiences go, that is also the case in sh4.

However, if you want to play realistically I suppose you shouldn't really do this in the presence of escorts - at least not too often!
