If you want practicing decoding and encoding Enigma messages, please post them here, in this thread.
This way, everyone (even non flotilla members) can participate, and we are able what to see in which areas individuals may need training and it will be easier to familiarize everyone with our procedures, without the need to go through PMs.

wow this is really awesome, sound great using Morse when sending enigma messages, this is a great improvement for realism are we going to take Morse training too ?

Well, is not required but this is a step in the good direction to reach more and more realism. It depends of you the level of realism that you want to get. Personally, I'm learning Morse Code to translate those messages by myself without any translator.

I honestly doubt that it would be implemented as a fixed procedure. ;)
There comes again that 'monster mix' between feasibility and realism that needs to be considered. Every layer added may improve realism, but also adds more complexity/difficulty and a higher workload for BDU/Staff and trainer.

Read it!
Yes, of course, I agree absolutely, no questions about it.
It means more and more work. I think that there's a point where each one, at home, can do so many improvements as he wants (as well as decorate the room as a UBoot, maybe just add a red light -like me- or to build a periscope with a screen inside or even learning Morse Code)
At this point, we can't "impose" a level of realism. We just can "propose".

Well, that's it, you got it right :
ON SHAKE DOWN CRUISE TESTING RADIO EQUIP. CONFIRM RECEIPT AND DECODING
The only thing is :
You don't have to put a "Z" after the time.
You can even leave the date without ".", as in 20052010
Thanks for that and welcome to the Club.
Keep on the good work, ZINK ZEM ALL !

That was from my notes of a patrol a few weeks back. It would have turned into an exciting patrol, if i hadn't ctd'd. the escort forced me to surface from all the damage during the depth charging. sank him with the deck gun. both electrics were fried, one desiel dead, the other at 8%. heavy flooding in heavy seas. we held on to her for 8 hrs before the ctd, reloading the auto save fully repaired my boat. disappointed, i went back to just before the depth charging started. first charge hit close to the hull just forward of the deck gun, down to 57% hull integrity. radio room was a wreck and flooding. managed to sneak away. sank two of the troopships for roughly 14000 ton.

There is a bug in the forum software.
As a workaround you need to start your message with a simple line.
Example:
Another day at sea.

Hello Cpt Kronos,
I messed up my first couple, but I now find it very easy to use.
Be sure to use Kriegsmarine M3 reflector (I saved my default machine as such). Then use the proper codebook page (I choose the wrong month once). I was confused as which one of these to use.
some tips I have:
setup machine with K.marine M3 B and I, II, III wheels. Save as untitled. Now one less setting to make at startup as the Kriegsmarine M3 (B or C) is always used.
Find proper codebook date and use pageup or down (and windows size if needed) to scroll the line of code just under the menu bar of the browser. It is easier to keep track of the letters in the code then.
Set rotors and ringstullung as per codebook. Make plugs as per codebook. Save it as the days date. You can then decode any messages that come that day without resting everything.
Type out your coded messages in the format they would be typed in using the machine buttons exactly. Type this on a windows notepad, then paste it to the auto typing feature. example:
BBB DDD UUU YY UUU THREE THREE YY HELLO WORLD X
Be sure of the text that is going in or out of the auto typing box. Close and reset it when changing from pasting to copying. This caused some errors for me.
Be sure to hit ESC or BSPC before decoding to start with an empty message buffer.
I hope you join, I can then give you this beerstein they gave me with the initials "FNG" on it. :)
I have RW and could talk you though it on that, though I must leave for work soon.
Capt.Kronos
07-28-2010, 05:20 PM
Well i think iv got it right now
coding up BBB DDD UUU YY UUU THREE THREE YY HELLO WORLD X using july 28 line I got
FOYM HRPQ CXVK JSIM HOAF PCGJ SACZ VIAH ZIVU I
I so did i get it right
smilinicon
07-28-2010, 06:13 PM
no, but it is a good start :)
I tried all four kenngruppen, but had no luck with the message. We can take it step by step and redo it. The line for July 28 says:
| 28 | C | I V IV | 09 13 23 | AV BC EM GI KL NU OQ PX RS TY
| OBV YBJ PYQ GNO |
verify settings:
1. Kriegsmarine M3 -UKW = C
2. Wheel 'I' set to '09', 'V' set to 13, 'IV' set to 23.
3. Plugs set to match (most tedius but easiest part)
4. Wheels show "A A A".
I've decided to make this message at 5:45 p.m. my time (1745 hours and I am GMT-6 timezone, so I add 6 to get the ZULU time. That means 1145 p.m. or 2345 hours ZULU or Greenwhich Mean Time. Of the four kengruppen (OBV YBJ PYQ GNO), I choose the last one (GNO) due to the ZULU timing of the message (explained in other tutes). So.....
5. I make up my own kengruppen and set the enigma machine to show it (I am using "AMT").
6. I type in "GNO" and the enigma tells me "KFV". I make a note of it. I then hit BACKSPACE to clear the enigma machine.
7. Reset enigma machine to "GNO", then paste into the auto typing box:
BBB DDD UUU YY UUU THREE THREE YY HELLO WORLD X
It should give back this message
JEJW JIVP CSWH MTZS PUYU QACB UFSZ KHDR DSQR K
subject line includes date and day of message along with the encryptions needed. I guess it is redundant that there are two ways to get the encription code from the subject line(?).
2345 / 28072010 / U33 / 37 / 1of1 / AMT KFV
Capt.Kronos
07-28-2010, 08:33 PM
iv got it
i got one of the wheels wrong
so if i sent you this you could tell me what it said
set your enigma machine to "GNO", then paste FGTI OSSW CFAK LOKQ YUJK
A into your enigma
then tell me what it says
thanks smilinicon (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/member.php?u=216060) for taking the time to do this btw

Engan,
there have been a couple of changes since the tutorial was made, perhaps it is causing confusion.
Latest codebook version is located here:
http://web.me.com/kkentopanga/Subsim_Enigma_Flotilla/Code_Books.html
for my message to you, I will use 09.October settings. These are:
| 09 | III V II | 19 19 04 | AD BV EJ FG KN LP OQ SU TY XZ | FOG SZS WJB QPP |
for the month of Oct, we are using UKW=B (this setting was forgotten when new codebook was published).
I will use your second subject line for this example and WJB as my chosen kengruppen. After setting up
machine, I save it as '09 oct' so I can reuse setting for other messages that arrive on that day.
1337 / 09102010 / COMSUB / 65 / 1of1 / VFP
VFP is set on the dials and WJB is typed into the machine, giving me 'MHG'.
This is added to the subject line:
1337 / 09102010 / COMSUB / 65 / 1of1 / VFP MHG
WJB is now reset in the dials and BACKSPACE
key is pushed to clear message buffer. Clearing the buffer is a very important
step and must be done before any messages can be entered.
My message is:
COMSUB TO UUU THREE FOURX
THREE ZEROY NOVEMBERY YEAR THREE NINEX
TEST MESSAGE TO ENGANX
messsage after formatting:
"COMSUB TO U34.
30, NOVEMBER, 1939.
TEST MESSAGE TO ENGAN."
encoded:
LJGM FWES TFKS VXYX RAOL ALNM LZPI PMLU SIFF
QMPM SOXU IRDT VWFI YPPF WVAQ UPMD UJHR
DVUG A
Hope you don't mind the detailed explanation, but it
is hard to track down errors when first starting and
this is the best way I know to clear things up.
I was unable to decode messages. error could have been incorrect
codebook, did not reset to kengruppen, or did not hit backspace
to clear buffer.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
When you see this message, you setup machine or load 09 Oct, then
set dial to VFP. You type in MHG and it shows WJB. Reset wheels to WJB,
hit backspace and past in the message.

Ok :)
i was using september 2010s code book , no wounder why u couldent decode it. i will then use oct 39s code book and send a new message :arrgh!:

I was unable to decode #62. Things to check for:
1. Proper date. I tried 11 sept settings of:
C III (08) I (04) V (11) AN BD CG ES FR IW JL MZ OQ VX
Tragrams gave me QPQ (incorrect kengruppen) [choose your variable on the rotors, type in proper kengruppen, then note threee letters machine gives you for second trigram. reset rotors to proper kengruppen, hit backspace, autotype in the message]
2. be sure to hit backspace to clear message buffer.
3. Be wary of the auto typing in/output.
I also note you have two = signs in your message. Only letters can be seen by the enigma machine, no numbers or other keys can be used.
good job on the decodes.

Well, I figured out I'm having trouble with the procedure with obtaining the second Trigram contained in the header. I think I have it sorted out at this point, will try again.

good! got JFO for kengruppen. will decode shortly...
ATTN. ENIGMA. FLOTILLA. / TEST. ENCODE / MESSAGE.
ONE / NOW. IS. THE. TIME. FOR. ALL. GOOD. MEN. TO.
COME. TO. THE. AID. OF. THE. FATHERLAND
note literal translation.. X is a period. Y = comma YY = / XX = colon
I use XX and X as line endings when I make messages. It simplifies getting the info out when reading.
well done! Your orders are in the December patrol orders post. Report departure and return to port there (not encoded). You then encode messages while on patrol.

I think that number of characters are related to them before encoding the message, but i'm not sure if comma, colon, etc must be counted, so i've only counted the letters.

count all characters sent (though it doesn't matter much). Note messages were sent in groups of four characters. random letters are added if message is not a multiple of four.
decoded message:
------------------------
TO COMSUB:
FROM U TWO SEVEN / FIRST TRAINING MESSAGE / GOOD HUNT FOR ALL / MOELLER /

reply coming shortly....
------------------------
1844/09112010/COMSUB/40/1of1/ZZZ QTV
LSQS LXCA RIOV TBFC NGUC GUGY QPVY NRRT VOBM
------------------------
(last two characters are random fillers to bring characters up to even multiples of four)
I generally use XX or X (: or .) as line returns. This allows me to format short, easy to read sentences when encoding. Thank you for including name at end of message.. it is very helpful.
