Formosa Strait, late 1944, put two fish into a lone merchant and (using auto targeting) periscope wouldn't lock on anymore so I'm thinking she's going down. No message to that effect. She's sitting there, motionless, dark and decks awash. Decide to surface and set her afire with the deck gun and she goes down but there's no credit in the patrol log or sunken ship symbol?

I've had the situation come up where I couldn't lock on with auto targeting, but never after I'd already managed a lock and hit a target...I never managed to sink any of the merchants I couldn't lock onto, but I imagine if I had(with the deck gun) or at least its not too far of a stretch to believe that no credit would have been given.

Is this close to an area where you just sunk another ship of the same type? Sometime the game will re-spawn an identical ship, you never get credit for sinking it twice.

Sounds like one got away.
Just like some of my fish. :D
Next time you tell this story might as well make it a Contra Verdi liner.:know:

Oh, I have an even better "fish" story.
Was cruising surfaced, daylight, in moderate seas when sonar announced a warship sound contact off the port beam which I thought was stange since there was no radar target in that direction. Went to battlestations, ahead flank and 90 degrees to port and was shocked to see a sub symbol show up on the map. Deck gun crew opened up at max range and the third round hit the Jap sub in the conning tower and down she went. I thought maybe she had crash dived but the sunken ship marker showed and there was credit in the Captains log.
Unfortunately, I saved the game ( 6th patrol of a carreer) and when trying to open it later, it CTD. Fortunately, I have a screen shot of the patrol log but had to start the whole patrol over from the autosave.
