I have released 4 very small mods that improve the game general looking.

UPDATES:

AilClouds updated to v3.0:
Yes, even better clouds!
Increase texture number from 8(vanilla) 10(Ailcloud2.0) to 16, the maximum alowed.
Removed cloud shapes that could be repetitive sometimes when possible.
Removed remaining textures not mine from prior version.
Download from web.

AilSmoke updated to v1.7:
Improved lower smoke and sparks and fixes torpedo explosions boxes caused by previous version.
Download from web.

AilMoon updated to v1.5:
Added real size moon option, 0,5š - 1š in sky.
Less spectacular, but more real.

Its the one big drawback for those with even very fast single cores which otherwise renders all the graphics quite well! thanks!

The smoke file is AilSmoke.rar

This mods only replace textures files, so there are no impact in fps, not betther, no worse. You will retain the same fps you have now even with all this mods instaled.

nice work. Using the moon, cloud and wave textures. For some reason the smoke mod makes my fire/smoke animations look blocky :cry:

! I noticed an inconsitency with other mods.

When I extraced the packed files, it dumped the files without a containing folder. Other mods so far has contained a named folder that can simply be extracted without creating double set of folders.

With these files I had to use the command "extract to xxx" instead of "extract here".

And nice clouds!

Edit: I noticed an issue while playing where the smoke sprite seem to be lit up by the fire sprite or something. Not sure what it looks like. The screenshot was taken when looking through the binoculars.

JSGME reports a conflict with the "Thumbs.db" file if i try to enable them after. Whats is this file and what may i expect to lose from the previous mod if i overwrite it?

just remove that thumbs.db , its a windows os file that gets created to show thumbnail views of whatever the image is in the folder. ie not required in anyway. over write if you wish, its not a file used by SH5.

Installed your mods and great they are , but one thing and I think its the Smoke mod for I didn't see it with the stock smoke, when I installed the Smoke mod and I hit a ship and the smoke and flames went up ( smoke looking fine ) when zoomed in with my P/Scope x 4 in the middle of the flames Square Over Lapping Turning Boxes.

Mi moon is in fact a realistic figure:

Moon phase is depicted in alpha channel. You should not depict in in rgb chanels if you want it integrates good with sky color.

The problem with Deckwave is not only speed, also where the wave geometry is placed, very away from hull. Also it is too much sutile IMO. For sure if the geometry of wavedeck was correct, more near to the hull, this mod would not have sense as it is now, but while somebody, or myself, not change that geometry position this textures look better than wavy ones.


May you add some "Before / After" pictures with your next release pls ?

There is a new Smoke version 1.5 with lower flames corrected and improved. No more boxes.
Problem was developers use that texture in a bit odd way IMO but now it is working fine.

This mods only change texture files, not change configs or data files, so it can be installed over any other mod if you prefeer this textures over the other mod textures.

I hate the vanilla rounded clouds at the first second SHV appear in my screen XD.
Unfortunalety the moon light side problem ( some kind of bug or missatention by developers ) is still there, and is not fixed by Ailmoon mod. I only change texture files. Orientation of moon should be coded somewhere... if is it coded... wich i donīt sure about. There are many aspects of SHV that feel very unfinished or unpolished, I hope modders or future patches can fix all these details someday.

On the other side I have to report another bug with Ailsmoke... maby if you already play with it you maby had seen it: The same smoke texture is used in torpedo explosions, in the same way lower flames was in fire smoke, so in topedo explosions you can see, again, the dammed boxes... The good news is that it is easy to fix and I will post another fixed version as soon as possible with this problem corrected. Stay tunned.

About clouds I would suggest trying the ones from Bird of Prey.
It seems that they have some kind of little halo around them that looks just fine.

These kind of halo are coded in render engine, it is not in textures, so it is not possible in SHV unless developers do something about it. Using halo in textures would look odd as it would be all in the cloud, not only in the borders. Also very cumular clouds type, with hard borders are not working very good with SHV clouds, I have try it allready, and although it looks very good when billboards are togueder and with 100% vertex alpha (engine coded), it looks really odd when billboards become sparse and the engine set it with vertex alpha. So what it is in the mod now it is, for me, the best compromise between realistic clouds texture and good looking screenshots in all type of clouds enviroments in SHV.

Cloud mod looks excellent. About to give it a go. Seems a bit naughty to 'borrow' REX textures from the FSX add-on, but I own REX anyway so no big deal :D (and it's all for non-profit so no matter)

Yes, I know. I usually donīt do that, but I have no so many good cloud shapes from myself to do entire mod, so I used 4 from REX until I can go outside to take some good photographs. This way at least SH clouds are not so ugly like vanilla. Next release will have none borrow textures. Also Iīm working with clouds.dat and very interesting things can be done so new release would not change only texture files.

Just one thing that is annoying me in SH5: the orientation of the moon is totally wrong! It might be a small detail for the most of you, but for me it's a mood killer (;)). As the illuminated part of the moon logically follows the sun, it's awful seeing the upper-right (instead of the lower-right) part being enlightened in the evening ...!

Any chance you can change its orientation?

For me, as amateur astronomer I am, it is also very very annoying. Not only shadow is incorrect, also the sim rotate the moon ,so craters are sometimes north, sometimes south... I have tryed to find some pattern so I can trick the texture, but it is not apparent one. Even worse, one night I even see the mooun raise two times !! The astronomical sistem of the sim is a bit (or a lot) bugy I think. Also, as moon texture and phase texture it is the same one, it is no way they could do it well, and it not apperar to be moddable. Moon face and phases should be different textures so phase could be rendered and rotated over moon face.

This problem is beyond this mod, I only improve textures, smoke behabiour or particle density is the same that in vanilla game and this mod donīt fix it.

First time i saw it i thought the British were bombing us!! The crew merely laughed at my foolishness...

I get this brown smoke too, it appears at ports, When in some camera angles and disperses in a few seconds. Annoying but doesn't have anything to do with this mod, I get it even in a vanilla/modless install..

Hi all.

A new Ailclouds mod version ( 2.0 ) is available to download.
This version improves clouds adding more texture tipes, and more solid and volumetric looking clouds.
This is no more a only texture change mod, in this mod also I chaged some parameters in Clouds.cfg ( still playing a bit with it ).

I think final result is a considerable improvement over previous version and a very very big one over vanilla clouds.

I'm sorry, Ailantd, but I noticed on your page that you are using clouds from REX.

Did you create those clouds for REX? If not, I do believe you are violating copyright since REX is a payware product.

Not trying to accuse you of anything, your modding work has always been appreciated.

Yes, I know. I usually donīt do that, but I have no so many good cloud shapes from myself to do entire mod, so I used 4 from REX until I can go outside to take some good photographs. This way at least SH clouds are not so ugly like vanilla. Next release will have none borrow textures. Also Iīm working with clouds.dat and very interesting things can be done so new release would not change only texture files.

we have said over and over here at subsim we do not care what you do in your own home but do not talk about it. here he admitted it and made subsim an unwilling partner in copyright infringement.

what is so radical about banning someone who admitted to promoting stolen/pirated stuff that the copyright holder (REX) has contacted subsim and demanded it to be removed from our site?

radical would have been if he were to have had his account deleted, a week long ban isnt the end of the world even thou i admit it is a PITA as it is intended to be.

his mod links were in fact distributing pirated copyrighted content that the owner of said content does not want distributed by anyone other then those licensed to do so.

Why don't guys ripping sounds from movies and putting them into sound mods get banned too? Last I checked movies are copyrighted.

It's not "ok" to distribute something for free that somebody else is charging for. The clouds were from REX, which is a payware add-on for FS9/FSX. It'd be the same thing as somebody buying soemthing and then putting the files up on a DL site.

The people here who do not understand the problem with this boggle my mind. lol

Ailantd was giving away parts of a payware product for free. He was illegally distributing copyrighted material. The fact that he owned up to it, while commendable, does not change the facts.

its normally its not an issue and companies usually dont object as long as you dont profit from it because big companies arent looking to pick on individuals. its just not worth it to them because they cant recover the cost of litigation with some poor individual that doesnt have any money.

in this case REX, the company who owns the copyright feels it needed to protect its product from being freely distributed and so they did object and asked for its removal so we did.

why would you pay REX to use there stuff if you can download Ail's mod and get it for free

So how do I pull my cloud textures out of REX and use them in SH5, Tutorial please. :)

It would be nice if we REX users had a cloud switcher utility.

I can post screenshots of my receipts.

I used to take pics of my outside clouds just to match up the clouds that day for whatever flight in FSX (local ga) using REX with ASA. I am so bad now, I doubt I could fly FSX w/o the live weather.

edit: If only sims started adding plug in support for something like ASA, like Bob/Sow. It would always be worth the extra money to pay for plug-in live weather, or historical weather.

I suppose a developer sat at his computer for several weeks putting those textures together, which are unlike any other cloud textures in existence (note, they probably bought them from a third party in the first place), hence it is vital that they are not released unless large sums of money change hands.

Anyway, I think the point has been proven. Now, can we have him back please? He has more mods to make!

Thanks for putting the link back up. I think this is a fair decision in that everyone still has access to Ail mods w/o the copyrighted material, and Ailantd gets his account back in 4-5 days.
BTW the new Ail clouds look great.

I don't see any reason for this to be a divisive issue. What it comes down to is that copyright law (at least in the US, I'm not familiar with international laws) is a serious issue that's compounded by a lot of difficult to understand prohibitions/exceptions.
In this instance, particularly with the rights holder making a direct request, it was in subsim's best interest to play it safe and make it clear to all its members that copyright infringement is an area they will not even begin to consider pushing the limits of.
I love Ail's mods, am using several of them (not the old clouds anymore), and look forward to seeing him continue to push the limits of what SH5 can do. He'll be back soon and hopefully he'll know that we all still love him and his work. :salute:

After being duely notified by REX's copyright holders that copyrighted material was being distributed through SUBSIM and demanded we make all reasonable efforts to see that this practice be stopped, then yes neal is a party to any further distribution of it after having been duely notified and yes he is on the hook for the consequences of failure to act.

whats fair or whats right or wrong has nothing to do with the law and legal liabilities.

they will take action against neal and this site as well as Ail and his website if the matter isnt resolved otherwise.


anyway i wont comment on this any longer since common sense tells you further discussion of the legalities is pointless.

Hello everyone.

In first place I apologize to all those who have feel aggrieved by the use of protected material in earlier versions of Ailclouds.

As someone stated before while I was banned I had released a new enhanced Ailcloud version, that also removed all copyrighted material in it. I encourage all you to update to that version. It can be downloaded from http://shmods.ailantd.com/index.php?section=AilClouds

About what happen let me clarify some points about the reasons for using that copy material:

1. In my country is not a crime to use copyrighted material for personal use if there is no profit.

2. I think the world of mods is a lot more closer to personal use than comercial use.

3. Rex is composed of hundreds of high resolution textures, from sky and sea plus a engine to manage all them compatible with FSX. I used 4 textures taken from the configuration html documents (less than 30% of Ailcloud 2.0), which were not even the high resolution textures used in Rex engine. Maby as stated in Ailcloud 2.0 txt file someone could think that I was using too much form rex or even whole rex, my mistake.

4. I advised the use of Rex in the txt as I don' t want credit that is not mine.

5. I canīt see how the use of these 4 textures can in anyway undermine Rex sales as using Ailclouds in FSX has no sense at all. Never I would distributed these material if it really could harm Rex in anyway. Rex is a fantastic environmet addon for FSX and deserve all my respect.

6. I alwais stated in any case I had planed to remov that textures as soon as I could as I prefeer not use others material when possible, copyrighted or not.

7. All people here are using copyright material one way or another everyday, from sounds mods, poster mods, radio mods... even all SH5 files are uby copyrighted material. All we are walking on the edge of the legality of some countries here.

8. Anyway I understand that even that 4 low resolution textures from REX are previosly hard worked by someone and if the owner ask not to use them, I have no problem with that. I removed them as soon as they ask for it (as I had planed anyway) and even can understant the temporal ban in the forum.

In end place I apologize again to all those who have feel aggrieved by the use of protected material in earlier versions of Ailclouds.

I would prefer that this thread do not continue to disscuss about this matter. Everyone have a different opinion about it and even every country has a different law about it. To discuss this has no point at all as previoulsy stated by Webster.
