One of the things I found odd about the targeting system in SH5 is that, no matter how far away a ship is in your scope, if you lock it in the scope it will say: "Unknown Freighter", "Unknown Tanker", "Unknown Escort", etc before you do the full Identification, but how would I, or any of the crew know what type of ship has just apeared on the horizon? (Unless the Hydrophonist heard the prop noise, but this is going by only what's through the scope.)

Would it be possible to have it so that it just says "Unknown Ship" and also has the full recognition manual unlocked so you have to actualy ID the ship properly without having odd hints as to what it is?

Can you even lock onto ships that are far away at the horizon? I play manual-targetting and the lock button won't come up on these contacts, so I see them through the uzo/peri but can't plot them on the map. This means no course plotting or anything can be done unless I get very near..

Only when they get near me, my XO will allow me to lock up!

That should just be in a text file somewhere. You should be able to find the text "Unknown Freighter", "Unknown Tanker" , "Unknown Escort", etc. and change them all to "Unknown Ship". Or better yet, to a blank so you don't get alerted to a ship you can't see by the text popping up.

I think the ability to lock a target is to do with if your crew is "aware" of a ship or not, as opposed to the range it's at, at least it seems that way from what I've experienced so far.

Sometimes you can lock a Ship that's 12000m away if your watch crew has seen it, whereas sometimes if you're submerged and see a Ship in the scope you can't lock onto it until it's about 3000m away if the crew aren't "aware."

EDIT: Thanks, Heretic. I'll have a look through the text files and see if I can find it, the problem itself is only in when you're talking to the Weapons Officer and it shows the text (which is supposed to be what you are telling the Weapons Officer) saying you can see an unknown whatever, when the crew call out a spotted ship etc it just seems to say "visual contact", as opposed to what type, which is good.
