While talking to Laufen zum Ziel, the subject of a flotilla emblem for our conning towers or a flotilla flag came up.
I am no artist, but here is my thread starter/ idea. It is a bit down and dirty, my Photoshop crashed,
but you can see the general idea.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v609/cfsfido/enigmacon_flag.jpg
It is vaguely reminiscent of the emblem used by the 21st Flotilla
http://www.uboat.net/special/emblems/weekly/flotilla21.htm
OK it is really really vaguely like theirs.
When more ideas are posted, we could vote on which one to use.

My first proposition is a Enigma ROTOR with the Kriegsmarine flag colors and the "E" letter, obviously for Enigma, of course.

Here is how our choices so far look on the side of a U-Boat; forgive the graphic quality of my pics, my Photoshop is still down so I am graphicly challanged at the moment. You may have noticed a third picture, that is my signature picture on the side of my U-52 but if anyone likes it, feel free to vote for it as well. Can't wait to see more entries.

Thomen is right, there is no time limit, but much after May 8, 1945 might be a bit pointless. :arrgh!:

I just wanted to tell you people and fellow commanders of U-Boots that you really did a great deed in the last days when I wasn't aboard.
after 3days of beind audited three major deviations were found and we are to solve this issue within 15days. immediately after that fine "score" I caught a cold, which is very disturbing as winter in Vienna sure is to leave.

never mind, I just get informed about the new message format, then will post all the new contact-reports I collected over the last days, then will fill them into Canovaro's OS-map, then I will start a new career in September 1942 in type VII/C

you are my favourite bunch in SH3!!

I was just wondering, is it possible to mod the game in such a way that the flotilla emblem could be displayed on the front of the conning tower, leaving the sides free for personal emblems? I have noticed that many a U-boat carried both flotilla and personal emblems on their cons.

Turm Emblems Your Way!
This is such a versatile mod, it will allow you to put almost anything anywhere on a turm. At the moment my game is still unavailable to me, but I have read all of the posts and this is simply amassing. It appears if you wanted to you could cover every millimetre of you turm with emblems, as many as you could fit, of any size or shape you can imagine. Seems the sky is the limit. I am sure you have noticed that some mods play well together and some do not. Also, some only play nicely together when installed in a particular order.
I only have five mods installed, not including GWX3, which gives me 121 possible install combinations, each having it's own set of pros and cons.
Mod B can over write files in mod A, and then mod C can over write files in either or both A and B, and so on and so on, causing all sots of problems.
I thought it might be helpful if we all listed the mods we have, the order in which we have installed them, and any problems we have encountered.

I have currently installed the following mods in this order:

GWX3 Gold
GWX-16km Atmosphere
Waterstream+Exhaust Combi V2.3 for GWX3
WB's Decks Awash
FM_NewInterior_V1.0
DFant_subFlag_2010

So far I have had problems with flags, and hatches. If I install GWX- Open Hatch my DFant_subFlag_2010 mod fails to work, leave it out and I have trouble accessing the extra rooms from the FM_NewInterior_V1.0 mod. Change their install order, and I have even more problems. When I tried to use the Conning Tower open Hatch mod everything broke, same with FW30_UpDown_final. These are all great mods, just not always great together.

P.S.

Just tried a new combination and it appears that everything now works.
GWX3 Gold

GWX-Enhanced Damage Effects

was informed by LzZ via pm that we should stick to one captain's name and one number of U-Boat.
I don't feel I like that.
the careers I play are realistic, so the captains either get to be retired to a desk-job or die at sea. in a new career I choose then a new type of boat and a historically correct new number of this boat. it wouldn't be glad to have to change this .....

I agree with you as far as game play goes, I think that LzZ is looking at this from an administrative point of view. He has enough to do with out having to change the Captain's Roster every five minutes. So it would seem you are both correct from within your differing points of view. BDU does monitor the threads. So far I have detected only three players who are consistent in playing Enigma.

When we first started I was BDU for 5-6 hours a day and enjoyed it. At that time we had 16 people playing which created a lot of activity for BDU to respond to.

We were able to get involved with our own subforum at subsim and we were able to get Canovaro's OS Mod.

Now with only three players I find it hard to give 5 hours a day responding to nothing, I have not had a PM for over a week???????.

I love the Enigma Flotilla and would like to get more interest from others in the project, But?

the problem seems that once the secrets of dealing with the enigma-machine are revealed (and one is getting used to encypher and decode) the interest vanishes ......

I also would like to decode the contact-reports and send them to OS.
but I'm not into status-reports putting onto the OS-map.
I can't see any benefit in it .....

BDU Comment - The duty of placing status/contact reports into OS will become very important as our Flotilla
evolves.

You're probably right here.

Problem is, we are so few I wonder if we can do that contacts actualisation on OS map any longer. This is only good when loads of Kaleuns are reporting contacts.

It's a discussion on the possibilities of replacing the immersion messages by enigma messages. The only very bad thing never to be done, as this image precisely shows, is to give away publicly the decoding key, as they do in this very example....
Difficult to implement anyway, as the messages span the all war, and in that case it would become somewhat difficult with the kenngruppen and Codebooks to be had beforehand...

THIS IS A REPEAT OF MY POST #4 FROM 04.26.10-10:09
Thread : sticky How to find your position in KM Grid and in Latitude and Longitude
To Thomen or BDU: :salute:
------------
In the same thread, Post 1, you say :
"In the picture above, U-276 is currently in grid AF 76. If we now overlay it with an imaginary subdivision of the grid, we will see that the u-boat is in grid AF 766. Another level of the imaginary grid reveals further that it is in AF 7661. "

In order for us all to have a quicker reading of our positionning, I was wondering if a file could be made that could be a transparent replica of the grid in picture 2 of that thread. Once it would be made we could mod it into the game as a slide out in the F5 map and so slide it over our position and have our location ( 2 letters 4 digits ) instantly with good acuracy. :03:

Tell me what you think.

Thanks.

BDU Comment - Dn't know if it will work. Can you research it? If it can be done would you like the project?

So, to conclude : ( Pouf, Pouf... )

A full options message could look like this :

2045/28.02.2010/U432/250/1OF1/ZAB ERA ( Actualized Day parameters, of course )

+ Any other usefull infos to be communicated.

* = All this part scripted of course
SDD = Urgent
Weather is always optional unless requested by BDU

To be agreed by BDU.

P.S. : Euhhhh by the way Herr BDU, you wouldn't find me a nice spot for my next Grid assignment ? Some place " opulent " like... You know... ( Heheheh ! )

Thanks .

Sorry for highjacking. It's over for today. Done my homework. :O:

BDU Comment- Nice and simple. This is an option we should use if we want to use
and make it optional.

I'm more into including the weather conditions inside the message instead of putting it into the public header.

As far as I'm aware of, that's how it was done during WWII.

Now am I confused. :06:

DATE / TIME / POS AN2537 ( or Lat Lon ) / AIR TEMP 10 / ATM PRESS FALLING / SKY PARTLY CLOUDY ( or code, see below ) / RAIN ( Optional ) / WIND 020 - ( BEAUFORT ) 2-3 / SEA SMOOTH / SIGHT 10 SM /

It says "SKY PARTLY CLOUDY" doesn't it?

That was an example. The sky could be overcast too, depends. Or instead I suggested using the codes at end of post.

I searched through some on-line archives and found so far just one (translated) intercepted weather msg from a sub:
Maybe we can use it.

For kicks and giggles.. :D

Following up on JMV's (mad props to you for finding the thread and posting the overlay) question about tracking your boat on Google Earth, and after some trial and error...

I present, a first draft for a map overlay and after action report from U-108s battle with a small convoy a few days back.

http://uboat-990.info/enigma/gfx/BF7751_overlay.jpg

Beware, however, that the picture resolution is roughly 3000x5000.. :D

Mhm.. yes.. you can. But fitting it in is a bit tricky (but doable), and the picture background should have some opacity for that.

And I noticed that some pieces do not fit in properly.. :wah: :D

Thanks.

It was actually quite easy. The hardest part was to fit the pieces together. Especially the once where you have long lines and nothing else at the connecting point. That is where I screwed it up and placed them to far apart. Need to put in markers the next time.. :hmmm:

Is it possible to make the thread "How to Encode & Decode Enigma Messages (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=162673)" back sticky again.

I think that thread is a huge help for newbies (and me too ;))

This is really fun and I am enjoying it!

Just thinking out loud here... it would be cool to have a campaign file with more limited randomization of convoy routes and times that could be loaded. Then, when individuals start patrols at a similar time, events would happen in similar areas. Not sure how things work in SH3 and really just a pipe dream for a bit of discussion. U-102 and I are timed fairly well in the sim and it would be cool if weather and ships were more in tune. :)

I am thinking our best bet is to follow the convoy trade routes as listed on the color map and hope for the best :)

Had some ideas in between doing chores here...

With next patrol round shaping up to be a good and busy one, I had an idea that the enigma message thread be started anew and it would be named to simulate the 'Enigma Radio Frequency' (I recently found the actual ranges used and could find them again). Only in-charactor enigma messages, with proper formatting, from boats at sea on patrol and BdU orders and replies for easy tracking.

Another thread could be started where the above channel is decoded. This would allow those that enjoy decoding to take part and also visitors may see what is going on (and perhaps want to take part(?)). Comments here would be allowed and encouraged.

Looking forward to starting P2 very much.

Salute to all.

This seems a good idea to me.
IŽll start the posts;
(1) Enigma Radio Frequency (patrol 02)
(2) Decoded messages

(1) Is to be used by active commanders on patrol and B.d.U. and will completely in code. like mentioned above (Only in-character enigma messages, with proper formatting, from boats at sea on patrol and B.d.U orders and replies for easy tracking.)
(2) As the thread title suggests. This would allow those that enjoy decoding to take part and also visitors may see what is going on (and perhaps want to take part(?)). Comments here would be allowed and encouraged.

If everyone agrees IŽll start with the posts.

How are we handling badges and medals for ourselves (as opposed to our crew)? SH3 has already awarded me the Front Clasp and U-boat Badge, but the Badge wasn't historically awarded until mid-October '39 and the Clasp until '44.

Are we going to have the CoO award badges and medals explicitly or should we just accept what SH3 awards?

afraid I lost my career (and my backup - don't ask...) and I had to restart another green crew. So it is a moot point for me. Seeing as I may need to tranfer to another U-boat, I guess it adds realism.

If Uboat war badge is not until Oct, I say we use the Sh3 commander awards as BdU sees fit.

er, I think we are up to Oct anyway.

Well, October 13th is when they started getting handed out, I think. But after the next patrol, we should be fine.

how to remove the 1944 front clasp. Please do this if you have been awarded this in SH3 automatically in 1939.

go into your documents\Sh3\...\careername folder\careers_0.cfg

find all instances of "Medal8=2" and change the "2" to "-1".

Please do not award SH3 medals to your crew yet.
