Firstly download our choice of Enigma Simulator, from HERE. (http://users.telenet.be/d.rijmenants/EnigmaSim.zip)

Once you've downloaded and installed it, you need to set it up before you can use it. This can be daunting at first, but is actually easy. After 2 or 3 different setup's, it becomes second nature. Honestly :O:

Below is a typical entry from our Enigma codebook. pretty daunting right? Wrong! I'll show you know exactly how to add this information into your EnigmaSim.

The first number, under Tag, is the date. Nothing more. The reason for this is so you can use the correct key every day, because it changes daily.

OK, lets run our EnigmaSim;

Cool hey! Lets open her up!

Click on this little button.

And she opens up. The next setting on the list is UKW = C. To set this click on the big "Wheel", top left of the open machine, until it says "Kriegsmarine M3 - UKW = C"

And that is it set! Next we have Walzenlage and Ringstellung, these are linked in how they work, so I'll explain them together.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee313/SJ_niall_UK/Enigma/walzring.jpg

First take out the 3 smaller "wheels" in the Enigma, click on each one at the top, and it moves to the middle, then click on the bottom of the Enigma, and it moves down.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee313/SJ_niall_UK/Enigma/capture_28022010_224122.jpg

Do this for all 3.

Then select the correct "wheel" or Walzenlage, left to right on the code book, click it once, and it moves to the middle, in this case the first wheel is IV;

When it's in the middle, hover the mouse over it and you will see it changes into a + or - sign, set this to the first ringstellung, the one on the left, and then click on the left most space in the top, like this;

Repeat this with the others, middle Walzenlage = middle Ringstellung, and right Walzenlage = right Ringstellung.

Click on the lever handle, top left of the machine, and it closes.

Next we have the Steckerverbindungen, or plugs!

To open the plug section of the Enigma, click on the bottom of the machine, here;

The big window, changes into a little one;

If we refer back to our codebook, we can see the plug settings;

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee313/SJ_niall_UK/Enigma/1.jpg

Setting plugs is easy, following the codebook, click on A then on F, click on B then on E, and so on untill you have completed the list, and it looks like this;

Shut the plugs by clicking just above them on the metal bits, and the machine is set up!

The next thing to do is enter one of the Kenngruppenn, and decode your first message, but that is another thread!
