Per Panser's suggestion, a subforum for this cool activity. :salute:

Let me know if there are any other threads in the main SH3 forum that need to be moved here.

Neal,

You are one hell of a guy. You will always belong to our little Flotilla and won't even have to learn the Enigma:haha:

The Enigma, does the message from your signature mean anything?

What would be the machine settings to decode it?

The Enigma
02-22-2010, 06:41 AM
Yes,

but after checking the decoded results, I discovered that I couldn't decode it correctly.

The decoded msg should be:

HELL OSUB SIMD OTCO MSEN DMEA PMWH ENYO UHAV EDEC RYPT EDTH ISME SSAG E

Panser

Not to worry, but honestly, nobody was ever going to decode that without prompting. The 5 letter groups show you were using Wehrmacht or Luftwaffe M3 configuations which would mean 1.07E23 possible combinations!

To be able to do that they'd would need to know all the machine settings that you can see an example of in my signature (though that is actually for Kriegsmarine M4) :)

The Enigma

I tried to decipher the code in your signature.

This is what I get, but it seems not to be overal correct:

SVGX ATUH ECRE ATED BYPA XSER

I followed the settings, but I must have been missing something.

Hi SH3 friends!,
I'm WOODYbcn. I've been very interested on ENIGMA machines for years. Actually I teach cryptography on Spain (just classic, binary and symetric). It'll be a great pleasure to join this "weird" group!!

Hi THE ENIGMA
You have decoded correctly. The message is:
SIGNATURE CREATED BY PANSER
I don't know why there are so many mistakes...

KL-alfman

it works and is correct.
have you checked if you use KM M3 (eight rotators) and setting the band to B?

I saw your other thread, and wondered if you plan on converting your paper Enigma into a working model?

Well, thank you for your comments. I think that the ENIGMA machine is a very nice way to introduce young people on maths or cryptography because the interesting and misterious history (even glamurous) around it.

Talking about SILENT HUNTER simulator. The main think is to navigate underwater as real as possible, ENIGMA really can help us to do it closer. Using MORSE (something feasible on TS) could be an important way to improve realism too. DON'T WORRY, it's just an idea. Learning the operation of ENIGMA can be enough.

I imagine all you have the ENIGMA SIMULATOR

To download the CODEBOOK TOOL can be interesting too:

If you have an IPHONE, has recently appeared MYENIGMA 1.0.3 (a must have)

Hi SH3 friends!,
Hi THE ENIGMA
You have decoded correctly.

I don't know why there are so many mistakes...

Woodybcn: The mistakes are because he hadn't decoded it correctly. Enigma messages are all or nothing - unless the sender made a typo, any errors reflect incorrect machine settings. Incorrect machine settings usually result in total gibberish, so I'm amazed that it managed to get so much correct!

The Enigma:

Did you check to make sure your machine was set to Kriegsmarine M4, UKW: B? I've double-checked it myself and it still works :yeah:

The correctly decoded groupings should read as:

SIGN ATUR ECRE ATED BYPA NSER

Woodybcn

Hi Panser,
Yes, you're right. The message is absolutely correct. Yesterday I decoded it using the same settings, but I put some wrong conections on the Plugboard because your signature image sometimes appears too little for my eyes!! ha, ha, ha...:dead:
Keep the good ENIGMA work!

@ Woodybcn:

are you willing to train our Flotilla in the basic techniques of the Enigma, if there is need for?
because I'm already occupied with decoding contact-reports ....

Woodybcn

@ KL-alfman:

Well, I'm newcomer and normally very busy. I think that this kind of "teaching" needs someone constant with endurance.

In spite of it, I think that maybe I could write some PDF with basic rules, some other PDF with advanced knowledges (centered on Kriegsmarine original rules).

Could be interesting to set a private WW2 ENIGMA settings just for the ENIGMA Flotilla. Settings different for each day of the whole war. This CodeBook should be something ABSOLUTELY SECRET.

Let me think about it...

ok, I thank you for your answer.
in the meantime I guess we altogether just try to encode and decipher the messages in the forum

Hi THE ENIGMA
You have decoded correctly. The message is:
SIGNATURE CREATED BY PANSER
I don't know why there are so many mistakes...

I was asking myself the same question.
Maybe I'm using an other enigma simulator (which if done correctly shouldn't make any difference).

I'm using the:
Enigma Simulator 6.4 (© D. Rijmenants 2006)
Encode and decode messages with the original German Enigma cipher machine
Operate the 3-rotor Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe model, the Kriegsmarine M3 or the famous 4-rotor Kriegsmarine M4, used during World War II
Fully compatible with the real Enigma.
Programming and graphics
Dirk Rijmenants

it works and is correct.
have you checked if you use KM M3 (eight rotators) and setting the band to B?
?????
I don't understand your remark.

In the signature of Panser is the beta wheel used.
So it must be a M4
Also given is UKW B in his signature. As far as I understand does this mean that the reflector UKW Kriegsmarine B most be chosen for decoding.
Setting the Rotor's "ringstellung" is a matter of clicking.
Same for the "Stecker" settings.
Stecker A is connected with V
Stecker C is connected with P
Stecker D is connected with T....
and so on.

Next I turn the start position of the rotor wheels to "EAST".
I type in the encoded message:
YNPJ WGEM BQZD WJWT TCQB HDYC

I'm puzzled.

Panser

The Enigma: It sounds like you're using the same machine as the rest of us, and you're correct - it is the M4 setup with the beta rotor. It sounds like your setup is fine - all I can suggest is to double-check all of the settings you used on the ringstellung and stecker :hmmm:

The Enigma
02-23-2010, 02:45 PM
:damn: I fail to see what goes wrong.
My settings:
UKW: B
Walzen: Beta VII I IV
Ringstellung: K-11 O-15 K-11 E-05
Stecker: AV CP DT EI FH LZ NX OS

Those seam to be correct.
Start pos. is EAST, next I start typing.
Enigma returns:
SVGX ATUH ECRE ATED BYPA XSER

*Sigh*

stecker must be MX there is a problem with the font that used in the signature its hard to read I made that mistake too at first time correct that and encode again will work... :salute:
