Hello all, pleasure to become part of what seems to be a great gaming community.

I searched the word "net" and "torpedo net" however i got no results.

I am running TMO for my fourth patrol, and my first mission was to go sink shipping near Guam. (July, 1942) So i went to my AO and patrolled for a few days fighting off air contacts but not even a speck on the radar or sonar. It's a big ocean and these waters were entirely new for me. The men were becoming anxious so i decided to turn around and go see what was going on in Guam harbor. Feeling confident from my last few recon missions to Hiroshima and surrounding ports, i decided to get in close. The Harbor seemed lightly defended, one destroyer patrolling close in and maybe another uncomfirmed a few miles northeast of us. I found my target, a large freighter docked in port.

My problem, i was to find out, is the torps i fire seem to be going off well before they reach the target, so i figure they have torpedo nets or more(less) likely they are hitting bottom or an invisible wall (ships render before harbors do, although i am close enough to see most of the harbor)

So my question is, is there a way to effectivly engage docked shipping in this game? Or should i tell the men they will have to wait till we find something out in open water?

Thankyou for any advice or direction in this matter.

Welcome aboard :salute:
You're right. Running TMO you'll find sub nets galore guarding major harbors.

Dunno what advice to give you. I try and avoid harbors. Too many nets and escorts guarding them.

Yeah i figured as much, thanks for the reply and welcome.

Off to find something i can shoot torps at that dont go under the vessel entirely, as just happened with the DD i shot at even with torps set to 4'

(well, one hit the prop, but as you already guessed, it was dud.)

Welcome Aboard Mobucks,

A couple things, sometimes it just isn't worth it to raid harbors even if they don't have nets. On some ships it is difficult to get anything except a bow shot since the ships have docks on both sides, and that may not be enough to sink them, and on some occasions even if you sink it, it hits bottom and the game does not count it as a kill. With all the coastal guns and DDs and even the docked ships firing at you, you can't surface to use the Deckgun, so it ends up being a waste of torpedoes.

Another point, I don't think the search works with 3 letter words like "net". Must be 4 or more.

Again, Wecome, enjoy.

If you want to harbor rape, most harbors have passes through the nets, most always at the deepest entry point, but usually a few other places.
Just be careful, you run into them hard or long enough you can damage your boat...or die.

I use one small entry point SE of Palau to get in, a small opening it the net of about 300 yards.

Your torps could've all been prematures...just a thought.

You can easily the the subnet with the freecam if you go looking for it.

The only thing bad about harbor raping is it's often hard to get a kill, you can use a lot of torps up. Due to the shallow water, some don't register sunk, because they don't go down deep enough. Then you can only sink them by mass damage points, using more torps...or you can stay way out of range and use the DG.....

thanks for the search advice, that helps

and yeah i finally did raid 2 harbors today, ended up coming from the extreme east of Guam and got that tanker from about a mile out, 3 torps detonated out of 4, had to make my angle as much as the pier allowed or else they just glanced off. Fun! Even better was the harbor in Kolonia ESE of Guam in marshall islands, haha i went waaaaay inside the harbor and took one tanker with torps, then surfaced and deck gun battled a DD and another tanker <500m that were docked on the way out, taking light damage for their 2 destroyed.
