Really probably 100 ships with mods. I can't decide which one I like best. I love the lines of the CA's. This is probably my fav. Won't give it away, take a guess, but the emblem should give it away.

Yep, I love the Yamato, but I don't think it's the best looking ship.

I like the Large Modern tanker...

10,000 tons of pure....well...tonnage :03:

But seriously I've always been a fan of Destroyers. (I hope I don't catch too much flak for saying that :dead:) The Clemson and Fletcher classes come to mind off the bat, but really I like them all. They were probably the most versatile ships of the war. Imagine, 5+ deck guns, 5+ AA guns, 5-12 torpedo tubes, depth charges, and a max speed of 35-40 knots, all at the expense of being able to slip beneath the waves...what a force!

Of course they don't measure up to cruisers or battleships, but those were like floating howitzers :O:

Second that, mello. Destroyer commanders were almost always young men, probably chosen to have a lunatic streak.

Imagine being an invincible 25 year old in charge of a 40mph all weather racing speedboat weighing 1500tons, bristling with all manner of destructive toys, a couple hundred willing servants, and being told "Well it looks like a fine morning. Why dont you take your ship down the bonny Firth of Forth at full speed and see if you cant bag yourself the Bismark. Full speed mind!"

Must have been fantastic, some days.

If you like the large oil tanker, this is even better..should be the biggest merchant..Large modern freighter..think it's in RSRD, but there is a seperate mod for it, installs fine with RSRD. 11K tons

Mine favourite is the Large Old Passenger Carrier, and the Conte Verde.. I don't like battleships because they are very armored and a salvo of 6 often never finished the job. Aircraft carriers are a rarity.

I also like the Large Freighters and Tankers, with the exception of small versions, which often confuse me.

As for loving some ships, well, I love the Flower Corvette, the Clemson, the Fletcher, and the Fubuki destroyers.. I don't know if Buckley klasse is portrayed in game (been two or three years since playing UBM), but that too is eye candy.

Good question btw...

To sail... Definitely any one of the destroyers. I love the speed and maneuverability.

To sink - any of the big capitol ships. I love the feeling of accomplishment I get from taking out a big carrier or battleship.

Like when I sank The Yamato and the Musashi in 1 patrol.

That must have been an experience.

I must say I do like the lines of the Japanese battleships - Fuso, Ise before the conversion, Kongo too. Lexington Class Battlecruiser is a favourite of mine now too even though it's still WIP. That there's a good looking ship :)

Gee, I never really gave much thought to the idea of favorite ships. It does appear that some ships are endowed with more structural details than others, especially at closer range where other ship's details blur or wash-out. I suppose the Furutaka might be one of the finer detailed ships as are some of the DDs (don't recall exactly which ones off-hand). The Takaos are pretty good too.:hmmm: I can't say for sure though (at the moment) which one is my favorite. Maybe the Mogamis?http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-confused005.gif

I've got to agree but with some expansion. I think BB's were the best looking ships overall. I love the way they sit low in the water, looking very slim until you see them head on, and they're as wide as a football field! If this were to list ships in the war (not just the game) I would also mention the Graf Spee, Bismark, Missouri, AZ (even though it was an older ship it was lovely),ECT...Big Battlewagons. Out of all of them, the Yamato was certainly the most terrorible and awesome BB in the Pacific. When I read about our Skippers actually sinking the Yamato in the game I have to chuckle just a little. 16" of side armor going deep below the water line. 24" of armor on the main guns. Overall speed 26 knots. She and her sister "Musashi" were the two biggest BB's in the Pacific. You've got to hand it to the IJN, for inspiring sheer terror, the Yamato was the Biggest, Baddest and Purtyist.

Hmm, my favourite ship I think is the Takao or Mogami cruiser. Very modern and cool looking ship. I like this smokestack which is curved. Very cool. I like the Fletcher destroyer too. I think it's the most powerful destroyer until the 1980s, with almost cruiser strength. I have to thank Silent Hunter for teaching me so much about ships and the Navy!

I'd go for the "Fleet Tanker" in FORTS most of the time the time thay are laiden with fuel and make a nice "boom" not very easy when you got rake's of DD's hunting you down, then you got BBs and heavy cruisers etc all over the place and you only got 1 torp left.

I saw something pretty cool yesterday. I was sailing close to Honshu and my crew sights a small merchant sailing dircetly for us. I immediately dive and as it comes into visible range I see a strange contraption on the port side of the ship. It turns out the merchant is a paddle steamer with a huge wooden wheel on the port side!! I had never seen one before and I don't think it is included in stock. Must be a product of FOTRS. At any rate, as soon as it got in range I put two Mk. 14s into it. It sunk like a rock.

Of all the ships in SH3 & SH4 which are pretty impressive and well rendered especially in the ‘Super Mods’, I’m partial to the U.S. Navy's 'Blimp’ airship which I first saw as a little kid (when they were still sailing out of Lakehurst NAS) playing in the sand along the Jersey shore. My dad once told me they were being used for spotting sharks, my brother said they were looking for Russian submarines, but they just plain scared the crap out of me because I was convinced that they were ‘alien’ space craft!

http://i676.photobucket.com/albums/vv123/Magua001_photos/JerseyBlimp.jpg

My next and sentimental favorite, though I don’t think the guys at Ubisoft did them justice were the ‘Elco’ Patrol Torpedo Boats (PT’s).

http://i676.photobucket.com/albums/vv123/Magua001_photos/PT109.jpg

Here’s my redo with the authentic twin 50 cal. gun tubs and colors flying just aft of the helm. The 20mm canon aft is actually obscured the angle of the boat so it’s not properly rendered. I'm still tweaking this screenshot so it's a work in progress.

http://i676.photobucket.com/albums/vv123/Magua001_photos/PT109D3.jpg

And last but not least, something that’s classic and timely, well built, low tech, and dependable but slow if you’re not in any real hurry, The Flying Dutchman!

Yeah, that's where I found this little honey, in one of the mission patrols in GWX 3.0 (Gold Edition) for SH3 off the coast of New Jersey (which incidentally is a very difficult mission to complete without getting blown out of the water). My deck watch picked up an aircraft off in the distance and when I zoomed in for a closer look it brought back many childhood memories.

During WWII, these gentle giants were very effective at spotting and bringing guns to bear on U-Boats off the Atlantic Coast along the eastern U.S. and Lakehurst NAS was still using the 'Blimp' well into the 1960's (during the height of the Cold War).

I was playing in the sand as a tot in 1958 at the beach when the ominous shadow created by this behemoth first crossed my path as it blocked out the sun from high overhead. Once my dad convinced me that it wasn't an alien space ship from the planet 'Mongol' (the result of an active imagination and viewing too many Flash Gordon episodes on TV) I then felt safe. I once had a chance to see one up close and even sit in the gondola at Lakehurst NAS during an air show which also featured an earlier version of the 'Blue Angles' in 1962! :yeah:

Would I be considered corny if I chose a ship I have absolutely schooled things with?

Narwahl. Hands down...:yep:

I'm talking destroyer sinkers (with deck guns...fast)
Spew off your torps, blow ballast and evaporate a convoy. Yeah, Balao may be able to dive deeper, but the Narwahl can destroy "most" before you have to.

I'LL make screens later, I got SH5 open ATM.

Sheesh! Narwhal in a battle with a DD is like taking a bathtub up against a DD. The Narwhal would be blown out of the water before the DD even got in range of Narwhal's guns. At least a bathtub would be harder to hit......

Ridiculous stuff like that is why SH4 had to be modded in the first place. John Wayne tactics just aren't used with submarines. If they ever were nobody ever lived to brag about it.

My favorite ship / boat? Well there are many I have always liked. The Iowa Class BBs, Fletcher Class DDs, A lt of the Imperial Japanese Navy surface ships are very graceful in their design, with the deck and hullsides sweeping up into the bow.

Although the latter, I prefer to see through my periscope crosshairs!

Easily S-18 class subs. I don't know why but for some reason I like the feeling that even one little mistake can cost me my life as my boat is such crap :D

You simply cannot go head on to the battle with it (even if I mostly do so) because you can't escape and sometimes you can't even fight so you're sitting on your own luck and hope that Japs do more mistakes than you :D

Because for sonar to work properly the ship has to move at a maximum of 12 knots. A destroyer is considered expendable, and a u-boat will normally try to hide from it anyway. A battleship is not expendable, and a u-boat will probably shoot at a target that big and delicious moving that slowly.

Hard to kill maybe, but easy to risk and easy to cause a lot of casualties (by a sub that is itself manned by a few dozen men at most) and repairs requiring a lot of expense and giant drydocks. A dozen destroyer escorts could be built at the same cost and probably in the same time, and would be many, many times more effective as ASW platforms.

That's strategic thinking :know:

With the bigger boats, it takes them longer to get up to speed, they turn in big circles compared to tin cans, and are better suited to supporting the big battlewagons, with ship to ship, and ship to shore engagements, where the brunt of their firepower can best be put to use.

Doesn't matter. One hit and the ship will have to return to port, into drydock, and be out of commission for several months. They don't risk their prize toys.

In SH 4, my favorite ship is the boat I'm commanding at the time; usually an S-boat.

In WitP, it's hard to say as there are so many to choose from. In the catagory of BB/BC, I like the BC Repulse, because it survived the debacle at the start, and has come through a couple other scrapes. However, I think the modern cruisers are more useful, and see more action. One of the problems with the big battlewagons, is that they're never around when you need them.

What can get more alpha than destroying ones enemy without him even knowing you are there? As I recall, big cats (the ultimate land alpha predators) attack low and fast, and always upwind.

Great Whites (the ultimate alpha sea predator) attack from bellow where they cannot be easily seen.

But I digress, my favorite in game ship would have to be the Sampan. I only wish they made it playable for career. Talk about surprising the enemy. :03:
jk, here is my list:
Allied:
DD: Somers
CL: Cleveland (my favorite overall)
CA: Alaska (prob not in game)
BB: King George V (love the 2 quad 13.5 main turrets, very fearsome)
SS: Never had a favorite, but loved the S-boat. Very cozy, and hard to forget that I was a long way from port.

IJN:
BB: Yamato Yamato Yamato (call me old fashioned and generic, but that ship is sexy as hell)
CA: Tone (Sonar on a CA!? YES. No depth charges? who cares when you got 6 depth charge armed floatplanes. Also like the design philosophy of mounting all four main turrets up front. Talk about an offensive weapon)

The rest are whatever, but it is cool how the I-400 and type B had carried a float plane.

As someone who loves flight sims, I think being able to launch, fly, and land a recon float plane would be an AMAZING addition. It's the real life equivalence of an external camera.
