Ok guys, I started a career from the beginning of the war, and I am basically working my way through all of the subs as I go along. Started on a type II, then a type VII. My next upgrade is going to be the type IX. My question is should I get the B or the C? I see the C has a slightly longer dive time. Any other advantages or disadvantages?

The 'C' has greater range, which is good for when operation 'Drumbeat' comes around, also like the TypeVII B/C differences,I believe the 'C' Type IX has more options in Turms and equipment. My favourite of the bigger U-boats the TypeIX C,does everything you could want without ridiculous dive times:yeah:

Type IXB is my personal favorite.
It has a hard time with the super long patrols, like Capetown, which the IXC is better suited to but, it's a much better North Atlantic boat.
If you like attacking convoys, I would recommend the IXB.
That slightly slower dive time, of the IXC, can seem like an eternity once the sky fills up with aircraft.

The C class is available only a month or two after the B.......it comes with longer range and is bereft of that useless 37mm rear gun.

I like that 37mm right where it is. The IXC's conning tower is too big for my liking.
I have a preference for night surface attacks. Even late war, when conditions allow.
I always have a fear that those large wintergardens will get me detected.
In all my carreers, the flak gun was only manned once.

I find that gun to be quite useful at close range. On my last patrol I downed six planes, with much of the damage coming from direct AA shell hits from the 37. When it hits, it really hurts!

The trick is tho........getting it to hit :hmmm:

Guess my gun crew was doing well that day. I set the camera on the planes and watched their performance, and there were many good hits with the gun. I was sure surprised as I've always thought it was a useless gun as well.

So I decided to go with the type IX B, mainly because I did not want to wait for the C to come out (it's January 1941) and I had the renown for it :DL. I just got back from my first patrol and I have to say I like it. I love the faster cruising speed on the surface, and boy oh boy does it have a lot of torpedoes.
I got lucky and hooked up with a few larger lone ships early in my patrol. I hit my patrol zone and decided to see if there was any traffic coming out of the Mediterranean. I hooked up with a convoy and terrorized it, sinking several large merchants, a light cruiser, a destroyer and a frigate. 60K tons on my first patrol with this sub... not bad :arrgh!:.
I like the dual stern tubes for destroyers!

I love the IX B; it's a great boat in 1940.
Having a second aft tube is very useful; I like having a choice between torpedos. I generally prefer T1s, but sometimes the wake is simply not acceptable.
The 105mm deck gun is very good at long range, around 4-5km destroyers are very vulnerable to plunging fire; the latter often go down before they can find the range. I still don't understand the in-game mechanics of this and it's only advisable in very specific circumstances... but I find desperate situations less desperate with a type IX.
The 37mm is useful in ways I did not expect. I had hoped it would help against small fry like torpedo boats, but it's disappointing there. For finishing off crippled merchants, it performs surprsingly well though. As for its intended use, I'm not too impressed and would probably prefer another light flak.

I typically use the 37mm with AA shells to take out torpedo boats. That flak does terrible damage!

or you can replace it with a vierling to outright kill any aircraft diving towards you...

The deadliest AA gun (when available) is the Twin 37mm

Good choice.
