Yeah, I know this is technically a copycat thread, but since we're discussing museum boats, here are some pictures I took of the Lionfish at Battleship Cove when I visited on Thursday.

The bow of the sub. They must have repainted Lionfish sometime in the past eight years, because the paint didn't look that great when I went in 2001.

The deck gun can still be trained and elevated, although I didn't have enough time to try it out myself. The paint on the bridge and aft deck could use some touchup.

A better view of the deck gun (a 5"/25 Mk 17 wet mount). You can find more information about this weapon here: http://navweaps.com/Weapons/WNUS_5-25_mk10.htm

I wasn't trying to be artsy fartsy when I took this one. Seriously.

Seriously, do I need to tell you what this is?

The captain's bathroom...I think.

The sonar station (sorry about the plexiglass.)

View looking forward into the Captain's bathroom. I hope those giant green things aren't what I think they are.

The corridor leading to the control room. Good thing I'm not "big boned" anymore.

Submarine life was no easy thing, and I'm sure the plexiglass panels obstructing all of the controls were more of a hindrance than a help.

This is what I saw when I went down to the sub's basement to see if I could get the refrigerator working again.

Everybody loves corridors.

"What a boring Christmas Tree. Let's install some red lights."
http://img382.imageshack.us/img382/108/battleshipcove093.jpg

"Okay, who forgot to clean up after their mess?"
http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/3003/battleshipcove094.jpg

"We've installed an ice cream machine as you requested, Captain. The bad news is, we had to remove the air conditioning."

My uncle Rudolph comes out of nowhere.
http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/2239/battleshipcove096.jpg

Having spent 37 years in the Navy, Rudy now finds the idea of being locked up in a steel tube for weeks with a good chance of drowning a nice one.

Okay, now I'm just wasting memory. Good think I have a whole gigabyte of it.

Here we see the two gigantic soup cans which the captain used to speak to the crew with, before the invention of the 1MC.

Things that indicate stuff.

"Ah sh*t! I forgot to pay my electric bill!"
"Don't worry, I figured out how to make all of the gauges read zero!"
http://img188.imageshack.us/img188/6730/battleshipcove104.jpg

Not surprisingly, the crew's toilet was a lot smaller than the Captain's.
http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/8190/battleshipcove103.jpg

This appears to be a device used in firing self-propelled explosive devices from the stern of the submarine, although it bears a strong resemblance to those things in the bow used for storing the Captain's 20-foot long green poops.

And a short video I shot inside the conning tower, which looks like crap because I was trying to hold onto the topmost rung of the ladder while shooting it.

Nice video, reminds me of panicky bits of Das Boot!

IIRC in Das Boot the diesels valves and springs are all exposed and a guy with an oil can wanders around them (or was that some other film?)

So where's all that gone?

Nice shots!

Thanks for sharing.

It looks like she's in pretty good shape.

Could you go up in the conning tower? One of these days, I'll actually get to climb up into the conning tower of a sub I visit. I've been to three and have yet been able/allowed to.

When I was a kid I was in "Sea Cadets" (Sn3/c) and on weekend a year we stayed aboard the USS JP Kennedy a Gearing-class destroyer and It was a good time withe the exception for the Middle watch. 0400-0600

About a month ago, my family flew down to San Fransico for the day and we went onboard the USS. Pampanito. Pretty cool.

While the ice-cream machine is historical, I think that having the ocasional and not informed visitor see it can actually cause the perverse effect of letting them think that the war in the pacific was a pleasure cruise for the submarine force. Which would not only be incorrect, but also unfair to those who sweated under the depth charges attacks or even perished for their land.

I hope there are somewhere around the proper information shields, so s to make people realize the true story :hmmm:

I miss being on the Lionfish. that was my favorite part of BB cove. I enjoyed going up to the bridge and imagining what it musta been like to be a captain in WWII....when I got home I bought SHIV :haha:

Cool pics! Glad to see the boat's in good shape. I visited Battleship Cove a few years ago, it left an impression. I had built a model of the Lionfish as a kid, so it was really cool to walk on the decks that I had painted by hand, in miniature. The cool part was the older gentleman who was sitting in the control room who had served on diesel boats. He was cool to listen to.

Great shots! Can never get enough pictures of submerboats.

Seriously, do I need to tell you what this is?
http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/3020/battleshipcove125.jpg

Of course not! that's the officers' private diving platform. They need to replace the wood decking, though.

No, wait. Maybe its the place to tie swabs so they can be cleaned. Our destroyer had a railing just for that purpose.
