I've been messing around with sillent hunter 4 and trying the tutorial convoy attacks.

Can someone please explain how you approach a convoy without alerting the destroyers as everytime I try to creep forward at a slow speed they always detect me.

So I would really appreciate if somebody could either tell me how its done or direct me to a link that explains this aspect in detail.

cheers :DL

Hi can only talk for myself but I try to get ahead of the convoy mapping the course then dive in front of them get benith the thermal layer and go to silent running. Then creep along at about 1 knot.

Know this isn't probabily the best or most realistic method but I have been able to get to the convoys this way.

Hope that helps a bit - happy hunting :)

steve is right...

stay ahead of the convoy, and below the thermal layer.

come up to P depth just before firing

Ahead and close to their course creep along stealthfully and only put the scope up when your ready to fire.

Be ready to be jumped on as soon as that scope goes up.

I prefer the end run, then diving to periscope depth and remaining at or below 3 knots. At periscope depth, you're above a DD's sonar cone ... if you come up from below the thermal layer, you're in danger of passing through the cone and getting detected. And, at 3 knots, they're not likely to pick up noise generated by your propellers.

Yep, Munchausen is correct. It may be fine to slink below the thermal layer but it takes time to get to periscope depth, during which time you are blind but they are homing in for the kill. Better to stay on the surface until they are within 5,000 yards and then lurk at periscope depth, where you are much less detectable.

That's for TMO. In all other game configurations just about anything works.

running SH4 v1.5 TM v1.7 I was aproaching a convoy in my S-boat at periscope depth between 3-4000yds away when they started pinging. I had not raised my periscope even once since diving at around 10,000yds. This was Dec. 11th 1941. Interestingly, the convoy was just hanging out not going anywhere. This was my second attack on it. On the 1st attack I went in under the thermal and came up in the middle of the convoy (again, they were just either moving very slowly or at all stop) and opened up on 2 Kuma light cruisers 2 MK10 torps each 2 kills. Between the 2 attacks they moved maybe 5nm before resuming their strange behavior.

I use both methods, diving deeper or remaining at periscope depth. I take in account what type of dd's there are, where they are and track beforehand where I want to attack from. In reality you're going to attack 2- 3 ships at the most, so often staying below the thermal works, just depends when you need to shoot and where. If my tracking is good I won't even raise the scope to shoot. Usually there is one row of about 3 ships and it's best to remain at scope depth.

Short looks with the scope, don't leave it up forever if your within 2000 yards. Make sure you don't have your air radar sticking out. Place it on silent running, even if you have to set the speed up a little. Most important is keeping a narrow profile.

We're talking about this at the other forum and Ducimas explains things well there with TMO. Even though the thread is about escaping, it's more about attacking.

So that's why I get the hell beaten out of me in TMO! Thanks RR will try this one :DL

Running RFB last night, long range convoy contact of tankers was on the surface 2 escorts picked me up and came charging over towards me, went deep under the thermal layer and changed course. They started dc'ing at a random location which gave me a chance to close to the convoy. Was a nice exercise in plotting and the dick o'kene attack method. Result 1 modern tanker on the bottom. (Only had 3 fish left before anyone say only one lol :D)
