I see a few recognizable names here

I had SH4 since it came out, played very briefly due to life and Il-2 campaign development getting in the way. Wen I finally played for a few hours, lots of little things annoyed me in the realm of immersion and realism, and I put SH4 away

My first sim was Silent Service, so I have a soft spot for sub sims, and one of my favorite books is "Wake of the Wahoo". So, this weekend it was raining so much I re-installed SH4 and it still makes me grin, but its been some time since I, forgive me here, tested the waters in sub simming

Where should I start, now that I'm starting over? I didn't see a sticky about it, and yes, I know, 'the search function works'. Those that might recall me from other forums will remember I like the attention  And anyway, I'd like to see if any old names pop up

Welcome Chris! You will find a ton of mod threads here:

And you will definitely want to check out the SUBSIM downloads section for SH4 here:

Good luck and happy hunting!

WELCOME ABOARD!:sunny:

A good place to start would probably be one of the supermods, assuming you already have experience with the stock game. Real Fleet Boat adds a lot of realism, and Trigger Maru Overhauled makes it a lot tougher. Run Silent Run Deep Campaign is a must with either one, as it alters the campaign files to make for more realistic convoy routing, among other things.

If you have U-Boat Missions 1.5 and want to play in the Atlantic, you could do a lot worse than Ops Monsun.

Thanks guys. I'm finding it hard to get a few hours to play the sim...managed the navigational and gunnery tutorials again though. I'm in Boston, and the non-stop rain has made a mess out of the roads and traffic; an hour and a half commute each way lately has made me have to stay late at work, and get home even later

I have no notion of how to even install mods in SH4. I can manage it with instructions; the willingness and ability to muck with a PC is a not a problem.

I have one official patch installed- v 1.4

It must be higher than that after all this time though. What do I need to start installing mods?

Chris,
If you have the Uboat mission add-on it will update the game to v1.5... I highly recommend it. If not there are a lot of very good mods for v1.4 - but the Uboat add-on is well worth it... and cheap too.

JGSME - Download this and read the instructions - this tool will install your mods quick and easy:

I also highly recommend MultiSH4 - this allows for multiple installs... and I recommend you only alter the 2cd, 3rd, 4th installs - so you always have a clean one if you need it. Easier to copy n' paste than reinstall. Check it out:

I won't try and recommend one of the Mega mods - because I have not played them all yet... but below is a list of the mods I am currently using.

RFB_v1.52
RSRDC_RFBv15_v421
#1 Real Environment mod install
#4 Warships retextured
Longer_Ship_Wake_V1_TMO1.7
3000 Yard-Meter Bearing Tools (1024x768)
Map Colour Original with terrain
battleflags (custom conning tower insignia)
Lite_fog_ V2+Slow_water
Webster's Smaller Rain for RFB
Sky_Environment_Opt4

Hope this helps!
