Apart from an ongoing campaign in China, the world is at peace. But the signs are troubling. German rearmament, the remilitarisation of the Saarland, the Anschluss with Austria and the annexation of the Sudetenland all add to a worrying backdrop to the present crisis with Poland over the Danzig corridor.
Great Britain and France have publicly vowed to guarantee Polish territorial integrity in the event of attack.
