i noticed there was a thread about setting up to join a multiplayer game but it left out those who want to host games and who sit behind routers and firewalls. like me who had problems until i found out i had to open ports. i guarantee you theres always people online even though there might not be a game. so go ahead and host one youll be getting people joining in no time.
so heres the ports

this is especially important if you already host games but noone has ever joined.
you would be surprised how many games ive seen hosted that have no ping so noone can join
if youve never had anyone join your game be sure to check your ports

Is there anyway of checking that your hosted game has a ping etc in the lobby?
I have setup all the ports listed on my router, turned off windows firewall, unistalled AV and still no one joins, perhaps no one likes me.

Only way I know of to check would be to have someone look for your game in the servers list and tell you if there's a ping listed or just a dash "-", which would mean you have no ping and nobody can join your game.
You'll always see a ping for yourself because you're the host.

One way to know for sure is to join one of the multi-player groups listed here. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=150232
We can tell you if you have a ping and if you do not than 99% of the time we can tell you what is wrong via teamspeak. If you do not have a mic I would suggest you get one.

That's one way to do it but, if you wish to skip all those steps just to find out if you have a ping, ridley, then simply post here when your game will be up, and the name, so someone will know what to look for.
Call it something like "Ridley Is Here", or whatever, for easy identification.
Some other possibilities:
It doesn't hurt to double-check your port settings for your router, if you have one. Simply allowing SH3 through the Windows Firewall, or shutting off Windows Firewall, is only part of the solution when you have the router's NAT firewall blocking the game..
Your version of SH3 is older than v1.4b. Almost nobody still plays the original v1.0 thru 1.3. If this is the case, then I urge you to install the last and latest patch. This also offers the benefit of fixing a few more outstanding bugs.
If you're locking your game with a password, then nobody would be able to join unless they know that exact password.
Most of the SH3 players you'll find on the Ubi server do not use any super-mods. You'll find, mainly, the online flotillas and groups tend to use those. Running a stock, or "vanilla", SH3 installation will mean more available players for your games.
On the other hand, it might be you're not finding any players because of the time of day (or night). You must consider that SH3 is a very old game, practically ancient, by today's standards. As such, the numbers of people that still play are very small when compared to newer games and more popular genres. Depending on where you live, it's usually best to find other players between the hours of 2:00 PM - 8:00 PM U.S. Eastern Time.

I agree with PaulH513 in view of the number of recent similar enquiries I've witnessed.
It is likely that your ports need configuring specifically for the game you wish to play.
I myself host Multiplayer maps from behind firewalls (both windows and router).
I'm unaware of your location but if you've got TeamSpeak and 19:00-22:00 GMT is conveniant I'd suggest you visit comsubcommand:
http://www.comsubcommand.spruz.com/
You will meet a very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful group of multiplayers (hell....they even brought me out of multiplay retirement) LOL as well as one or two of the GWX team....all who will be more than happy to help you sort your router out.
Good Luck http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/pirate.gif

Yes, it is true that we had Kpt. Jimbuna in a MP game and I was watching him like a hawk to see how he would handle his sub. To his credit he did extremely well sinking a few merchants and hooted and hollered when he got a torpedo hit. He runs a tight ship from what I can see :o and its no wonder he is "Chief of the Boat".
Jim stop by again soon, I just made a new map that might have you scratching your head :shucks:

OK I will try that, thanks for the replies. I used to host regularly but have since changed routers/PC's.
I have a speedtouch 585 router and I have set it up as stated one of the above posts.
With all the ports listed as forwarded, I have even tried turning off the firewall, both router and software, and no go.
Here is the listing from my router.
Protocol Port Range Translate To ... Trigger Protocol Trigger Port
TCP 40000 - 42999, 40000 - 42999, - - Edit Delete
UDP 40000 - 42999, 40000 - 42999, - - Edit Delete
TCP 18000 - 18000, 18000 - 18000, - - Edit Delete
UDP 17997 - 17997, 17997 - 17997, - - Edit Delete
UDP 18001 - 18001, 18001 - 18001 - - Edit Delete
UDP 41006 - 41006, 41006 - 41006 - - Edit Delete
UDP 44000 - 44000, 44000 - 44000 - - Edit Delete
UDP 45000 - 45000, 45000 - 45000 - - Edit Delete
UDP 45001 - 45001, 45001 - 45001 - - Edit Delete
TCP 6667 - 6667, 6667 - 6667 - - Edit Delete
UDP 43500 - 43500, 43500 - 43500 - - Edit Delete
If I host on one computer on the home network, I can join the game from another on the home network and play. But if I try to host online no one joins and my ping is listed (on the hosting page, as zero. So I presume it must be the router and not the PC. Although I have unistalled AVG and turned off the windows vista firewall.
Any ideas?

I think I see your trouble.
You have both TCP and UDP enabled for ports where you only need one or the other.
Here's the official ports list straight from Ubi.com:
For the game itself
TCP 18000
UDP 17997,18001
TCP/UDP 6667
For the Ubi Servers
TCP ports 40000 through 42999
UDP 41006,44000,45000,45001
See if that gets you sorted out. We'll keep plugging away at it until you get this licked!

OK, I have tried these but AFAICS to no avail.
However does anyone else have a Speedtouch 585V6 router? Through some googling it seems it has some "issues" with portforwarding ports above 10000. However I have not been able to find out what the issues are exactly.
I have tried to reflash with different firmware to no avail, I do not think it is locked, but it just complains that the firmware is not compatible (which it is).
I will keep trying, although if I cannot port forward teamspeak might be tricky....
