What's your "wish list" of multiplayer features you'd like to see in Silent Hunter 5?

Post your ideas here. You're the future of Silent Hunter and everyone's voices joined together can make a difference.

All of your ideas will be presented to the SH5 Dev team at the 2009 Subsim Meet in Denmark. This is your opportunity to help shape the way you will play online with Silent Hunter 5! :yeah:

I thinks this has been said elsewhere but at the sake of being redundant I want:

a:A more realistic modelling of aircraft physics.

b:The ability to shoot anything that shoots at me-ie if the land based bunkers can shoot me, I should be able to shoot back. I'd also like to shoot up harbour facilities and the like.

c:I want to BOARD! Cutlass in one hand and a enemy language phrasebook in the other "Um, whats' "where's your codebook?" in German?". OK, probably not such a high priority, but you asked.....

I want:

1. Wolfpacks!

2. A more active BDU. For example, giving me orders to transfer to
the Med, or landing a agent in Ireland, or plant mines outside Liverpool, or
asking for weatherreport or ordering me to change position to grid AM13

3. Multiplayerscenarios where the players can choose to drive a uboot
or command a destroyer.

4. A little book, describing how to mod the game!

5. Pleaseee! On this one, activate all the voicefiles, that are not used in
SH3 ( or SH4).

6. The option to go the bar and listen to the latest gossip and roumours.

IŽll be back with more thoughts...must go to bed now...

I want to be able to add on upgrades no matter how low my renown points are.
2. have more torpedo upgrades. I know they had more than just 3 types.
3. To be able to go to more rooms like the engine room and the forward and aft torpedo room.

hmmmm, just an odd fantasy, maybe add in a storyline (sink the shigure comes readily to mind)
not a consistent storyline, like a BG story,
and make it more FPS-friendly...

I don't care about the last one, but the first would be cool

On surface nav.:
1. The lookouts announce for "ship spotted" with its "clock bearing".
2. Under attack, the deck watch should notice at least the projectil sounds when they hit near the boat.

The maps:
1. For long distances, the maps should adopt a configuration closest to the 2D one. On SH2 the maps earth model was a sphere, but we lost it on SH3 and SH4. For distances above 1000nm between two points, shold be showed the orthodromical path (great-circle distance).
2. In maps the scale could be vertical and, at least over 1:100,000,with cos (Delta_lat) correction.
3. It should be good to have the option of adding "permanent" landmarks or milestones for future campaigns or careers.
4. The contact marks should be associated to time and a "flag" to distinguish the different contacts (see "The Chase").

The chase:
1. From the periscope(at captain order) a bearing line, keeping time datum, should be senden to the nav and attack maps (if later -almost inmediately- completed by an estimated range).
2. From the sonar and radar stations (at captain order), a distance spot (within a bearing sector) should be introduced in maps (like above suggestion).
3. For both UZO, periscope, nav.,attack & sonar stations, a list -up to at least 6 contacts- should be ready to be assigned (with different flag-icon) to identified vessels so that, once accquired form Recon Manual, you can send one to TBT without needing re-opening RM.

Attack map:(in order to make its station an active one)
1. It should be equipped with the plotting tools.
2. It should have a maneuvering table on the sub (on static position) to let solving relative motion problems (a true cap indication should be included.
3. Data should be interchanged between nav. and attack maps.

Torpedo magazine:
Time to finish the torpedo recharge, at current situation, is more useful than percentage.

Good hunt!

Navigation log should be kept on a file before it disappears from its windows, to let its further analysis.

Captain log could have an option to write small texts.

Once the crono is showed from a station, it shoultd be kept on the screen by default (I suppose this option is easy to mod within Sh4).

Love to be a bilge rat !

I have stumbled across targets very near major Japanese bases and for hours afterward no ASW showed itself. I found a task force at anchor and after attacking not one ship got underway to hunt me for the entire day. The surviving ships never once left anchor, they just kept pinging me while sitting still. I'd think I'd have about 5-10 min before all hell broke loose.
The game kinda loses it's challenge without alittle hot pursuit.

All great ideas. I have a couple:

How about the ability to share the sub and any dd incorporated. For example 4 or 5 can actually crew the boat.

A full world evolving map say like WWII online.

A more realistic sub, for example left and right engines, and real time loading and fueling in the docks. Even maybe if online and you dock, a static ai / scenery sub would mark your place in the harbor.

In this evolving world make full use of the radio, on time news for the day etc, drivin by the server time stamp.

And then to seal the deal, make use of the guys around the net, take those guys that like to drive around cargo ships etc and give them the ability to run convoys or something.

All said just make it more for online play than the last two are.

Just my thoughts, hot, straight, and normal fish to all.

What do I want? It's simple. More countries, and a sub where you can walk around. These subs are boring, you just have something like 5 spots where you can stay. The game would be so much more interesting, if it would be possible to walk around the sub, go to torpedo rooms, walk on the deck while surfaced etc.

And the other point, more countries. I really mean this! If it's WWII, I'd like to play some other countries too. Finland had 3 modern submarines, and the archipelago would give a perfect place for hunting. These two games have covered the whole planet, but the accuracy in details has been very bad. The Finnish archipelago would be very hard to do, but it's worth of it.

If I don't get walk-around possibility, I won't buy the game. I have 2 almost similar Silent Hunters, only the are is different. Now it's time to add something new!

I really would like to see a cold war edition of SH.
1.) Missions were we would have to sneak into harbors, evade patrols and get pictures of Russian boats or have to place cable taps on the phone lines.
2.) Shadow the missile boats as they come out of the GUIK gap.
3.) Monitor missle tests and collect telemetery.
4.) Get up close to the shores and use radio antenna to pick up radio and telemetery.
5.) Get a chance to use some of the different subs from the 50's through the 80's.

Just a few ideas, I know its not as exciting as the world war II stuff because we actually get to sink ships but there is a whole different world for subs after World War II that involved spying and some pretty nifty stuff.

Id like a more realistic sea bed.

be able to call for help and get either surface or air help.

wolf packs

cinematic cut scenes, promotions, hull being crushed etc.

to be able to walk around the full boat and intereact with as many onboard things as possible.

Oh and a money tree but thats just for me lol

UBISOFT please note that this is an almost universal request for SH 5 that appears again and again in this forum. please also remember that through-boat movement requires a convincing and realistic user avatar, ideally with the player's own face. (If IL2 FB could do this 5 years ago I am sure that SH 5 can do it too and such little options add hugely to immersion for us all. Personally I'd love to crew vessels and bombers in co-ops with friend's faces, so that I can fight alongside my actual online buddies visually too. )

I also agree with those who want to see-

Crash dive animations of people slamming hatches
Crew running up and down ladders
Seawater pouring in as conning tower hatch is closed in crash dives
Crew securing hatches in damage control situations
Torpedoes sometimes breaking loose under attack and crashign about torp room causign injury
Wet crewmen after that who gradually dry out
Injured crew men with badgaes and blood
Destructible interiors with damaged equipment falling about or rolling one the deck
FAR more and more convincing interaction with AI crew
AI crew who look, move and sound like living human beings and not stiff rubber dummies with standardised responses regardless of the situation.
AI crew who are "doing stuff" moving around inside the boat, moving through hatches, in an out of heads and randomly "fidgiting" and occasionally looking around when standing or sitting, as real people do. Check ARMA II if you don't think that's possible with AI.
AI crew who show increasing tension and fear during heavy attacks and "anxiety" and staring upwards when the enemy are close above.
We already have bad leaks showing in the control room so why not damage to a given compartment actually showing up visually, especially flooding or fire.
Crewmen showing injury or even dying and becoming inert bodies
Real physics inside the boat with stuff rollingh about on the floor and flooding water and bodies runningor rolling down hill.
People occasionally falling over or grabbing things for stability during a heavy attack.
An anxious officer with his eyes glued to a stop watch as a torpedo speeds to it's target.
Crew reactions like cheering, shouts, fists punching the air, smiles and arm waving when the enemy is hit by a torpedo.
Shell case ejection when the deck gun fires.
Reloading animations on the deck and connign tower guns
deck casualties falling in the sea, carried to conning tower, lowered down hatch or being carried by fellow crewmenbelow decks.
Ideally an MP co-op mode where several players can crew a boat. that would be SO cool and ultra-immersive!

Nothing destroys the adrenaline and excitement of a crash dive or a depth charge attack faster than dead pan stereotyped crew responses from immobile dummies who don't even change position. for me this was my major disappointment in SH III and although the avatars are less laughable in SH IV they are still IMO wooden and unconvincing.

Surely this could be achieved with AI characters having a repository of alternate "reaction or behaviour modes" triggered by other factors, as they can only exhibit one at a time and those not in use remain out of play in code, so the RAM overhead need not be too high.

This kind of wish list is not "mere eye candy" either. These are combat simulators which are designed to affect the emotions and experience of the player. In real combat the reactions of those around you is a really massive part of the whole experience, adrenaline, memories and shock. It doesn't matter how perfect the modeling and realism of the ocean and all the vessels are, if the AI crew and enemy are lego dummies and your own character is no more than an invisible ghostly "point of view" whether you are in an infantry squad, a civilian airliner, a combat bomber, a tank, a warship or a combat submarine. I want crewmen in combat vessel interiors so realistic that I start colecting screenshots and videos of the action with FRAPS! The same applies to the enemy fleeing sinking ships and those in lifeboats or life rafts. How abut an "abandin ship!" command for a damaged surface sub with crew taking to life boats and a pick up by another sub or flying boat even if they were standarised cut scenes? Make the human beings far far more convincing and realistic please as they ARE the action actually.

I also cannot stress strongly enough or often enough how crucial sound is and how much can be achieved simply by authentic and changing "background sounds" such as crew chatter, radio broadcasts, cries, groans and screams, anxious exclamations, muttered cursing, different accents and pitches in AI crew voices. Sound is enormously influential in building a scene. I used to love the old Medal of Honour FPS series because EA employed excellent music composers for their ingame music which somehow caught the dark feeling of tension and anxiety mixed with hope and glory in a wartime situation. I would still buy some of that on CD if it were for sale. remember the awesome music in Blade runner for example? How key was THAT to atmosphere and immersion?

The video game industry is fast expanding to become larger than Holywood because we are fed up with being a passive audience and all want to interact with the drama now. Just check the cast list of any major modern gaming house and the everage age of gamers these days which includes an increasingly massive contingent of silver surfers like myself, who understand what is possible ITwise and increasingly expect the same quality we have come to enjoy in movies. Perhaps the day will come when movie stars will "ghost" AI avatars in combat games? Imagine THAT! This of course presupposes a MASSIVE increase in the realism of the all avatars. Ultimately war is about HUMAN COMBATANTS so they should always be amongst the BEST modelled elements in any combat simulator or any kind IMO. Otherwise it all just remains "dummies and mechanical models" and will remain semi-trivial, like playing with GI Joe for grown ups. I wan't my fellow aircrew, soldiers, sailors and my own avatar to look convincingly real. THAT along with convincing and far more complex sound are the keys to a quantum jump in immersive realism and in-game drama. See you on the new boats guys!

Just as they said in Field of Dreams about baseball with Kevin Costner -

"Build it and They Will Come!"

THAT is ultimately the only eway to double your profits and your user base Ubisoft. I also thoroughly agree that articulate, creatibve and imaginative members of the gaming community should be used by the design houses as a consultants and a market research resource. I hope that Ubisoft has full time staff reaind user requests in Forums too. (SURELY they realise how crucial and cost effective for marketing and game design that is?)

I should end this by saying that I really appreciate the massive amouhnt of work involved by the game designers and modders who have already given us a really fantastic family of submarine simulations that are gradually becoming truly awesome exemplars of the programmer's art. Go for it guys. Keep on building it and we'll definitely kepp on coming, money in hand!

Apologies for the length of my posts - I don't post here often but when i do they tend to be long ones. I guess I need to get out more, LOL

Lol....
People, look on the first post in this subject...
Multiplayer's mission are too short for "sneak" missions.

The best play in multiplayer mode on SH5 will be if:

1) Will be possible to play 16 players (f.e. by LAN) with "not perfect" connection between single players.

2) Autodetection of mods used by host and other players and show it when connecting (can play? or need special mod?)

3) Easy to play as American / British / German / Japan / France / Italian / or other's nation ship (DD or sub) to realise "historical battles" between players (teams: axis vs. allies)

4) Possible to play in teams (if mission allows)
* subs vs subs
* subs vs DDs (DDs mean torpedo boats, escorts, cruisers, battleships)
* DDs vs DDs

5) Possible to play with 'partially controlled' AI ships and aircrafts when one player play as one team (f.e. one player plays as one team with control 5 differenet ships and other 5 players are playing against him as second side)

6) Possible to order AI naval group (convoy) as change course (max 30 degree), faster, slower, split, join, zigzags by team leader (leader checkbox to control partially-AI ships independent from main ship or leader ship?)

7) Autodetection of target by ally AI units (inform all ally players and show "non-identified" icon on map with localization and depth if submarine).
Every AI-unit should inform ally players about sub if he is seeing periscope close to her.

8) Detection of subs by human controlled escorts (passive as direction, active as location and depth, two DDs with only direction give position) or with cooperative with AI (few simple command to AI as attack, detect, search)

9) Possible to control aircrafts course and attack selected target (if the planes are included to mission) to searching the enemy, recognize, attack if possible. Aircrafts should be "connected" to leader ship to ordered by one, selected player.

10) Disconnected players still existing and "playing" in host game controlled by veteran AI to protect balance of teams.

11) Owner's name on ally ship near her really name (or in bracket possible to control by his owner). Its very furious when the leader ask: Who plays USS Alabama? USS Alabama please turn left and search uboots in your region! USS Alabama! Men, turn left! Who plays USS Alabama? Ooooh, my God, I'm playing USS Alabama, sorry...

All these points are created not as "I think that" but on real experience of old, poored graphic but the best climatic and playable multiplayer naval game, playing as destroyer against human controlled enemy subs or naval units in multiplayer mode:

I've been a sub sim fan for most of my life now, started of with the NES game Silent Service, and I was hooked at age 5. I've played most of the sub sims out there, and I have the following thoughts on what I'd like to see in SH5

1. Modern Naval Warfare. There is a market for it, I'm tired of WWII, its ran into the ground from everything like COD 1 - 3, as if WWII was the most awesome war. So I'm burnt out of WWII games, please give me something I can sink my tech brain into.

2. Around the globe nav map that has some detail. when you zoom in on Washington, I dont expect to be able to see the white house as if I was looking at it through google maps, I'd like to be at least able to tell that there is a city there.

3. River navigation?? prolly too much to ask for, maybe as a tutorital, ya know, take the boat out of the dock for the first time, learn the controls, get to the ocean at least. Just a thought.

4. better coastal detail.

5. button panels for weapons control. Maybe I like Jane's 688i too much, but I really liked that, having to flip all the buttons and stuff to get weapons ready for launch, expand on that and make it look like something you'd see irl.

6. ICBM Nuclear missile launch mission?

7. Upgrades, in all areas. Everything from new tech to toss onto the hull, in the sonar array, a new multi sensor single mast, UAV deployment (could be the extended view camera for when you're underwater). Upgrades for the crew, getting better men that are better trained, have a file that you can look at, a point value, skills and trades that make your ship run better, or that make the weapons do more damage or have better range.

8. An engineer named Scotty!

9. Random Events, ya know, you're on a trip 3000 miles away, you get half way there, boom, fire in the galley! i'm not saying make a mini game where you have to do x y and z or the ship sinks, just a random event, some damage if it turns out bad, or maybe it happens, everyone does their job perfectly, and your crew's skill goes up a few percentages. stuff like that. random, could turn out to be good, could turn out to be bad.

10. Under Ice Missions!

11. Fully constructed 3D environments for the control room, radio room, sonar, torpedo room, engineering, weps, captian quarters, galley, with characters and crewmen you can interact with. Go up to the cook and have a small dialoge asking about ship morale, or to your engineer giving you a status report on how the reactors are doing and other stuff. I'm not saying make it a RPG game, but a captian needs to interact with his crew, I'd like for it to be in a sub sim game too.

12. TLAM Data entry that I dont have to do. Seriously. If I have to launch 8 missiles, and type in the landfall weighpoint, and the target GPS numbers for all eight... argh, ya know what, delegate that job to someone else, make them do the work, I'll be back in 5, I need more coffee, Captain's perk!

13. A good general quaters alarm and anoucnement.

14. A good collision alarm.

15. Voice acting. When a the guy working the sonar tells me I have an incoming torpedo bearing 270 at a range of 1000yrds... please do not make it mono tone. Put some feeling into it, more like "CON SONAR! Incoming TORPEDO bearing 270, it's at 1000yrds sir and closing fast!" mix it up! Capt calls for emergency deep, the cheif of the boat reflects that command "20 degree down bubble! Down down down!"

16. Keep the time compression. I get 8160x normal time in SH4, it helps when your mission is all the way into the china sea to get there, still though it takes a while at standard speed. So maybe improve that.

17. Senior staff meetings, to give mission details, information, suggestions. It's adding a bit more RPG, rather than simpling reading your order off a radio report or a dispatch, and then just going and doing it.

18. Graphics improvements... I'm happy running SH4 with TMO, It's got good detail in it already for the ships, the water and lighting effects. I dont want SLI to be able to play sh5, so they are good where they are at, but there are rooms for improvement.

19. Underwater camera showing Navy Seals or swimmers exiting the trunk. A nice little sequence that shows the guys leaving and getting clear to tell me I can move my ship now.

20. DRY DOCK! something there major ship repairs can be done, upgrades applied, I can see blueprint of the ship and systems and upgrade them.

This is not all that I've thought about, but it's enough for now. I love sub sims, so I hope SH5 is sweet.

Call in friendly forces/merchants(area ships sail to you) for refueling. (some tanker subs also patroling)... make so merchant can refuel maybe. depending on ship that show percentage of fuel..
like i would get a full tank from a fishing boat.. make it so some axis forces can refit also..

If you've watched the trailer for what they've done so far you must agree that it really looks very impressive. They seem to have read our forum and incorporated most of the most frequently requested features. If you are still reading this UBI soft can I put in yet another plea for AI fish shoals and individual large fish like sharks, dolphins, rays and whales underwater? I'm the loony who wanted the sea gulls in SH IV and you listened and did THAT so now can we please have fish in the sea?

I do not ask whimsically. As a former professional undersea worker I can tell you that the presence of fish and their reactions to the passage of a vessel, a submarine or depth charging (they die and float or when deep, sink and lie on the sea floor) would hugely add to the immersive realism in exterior views, not to mention all screenshots. The real ocean is a densely populated and very busy place underwater! I would love to see dolphins on either bow occasionally accompanying one's progress too!
