View Full Version : How to go to snorkel depth?

Ahoy mates! :arrgh!:

I acquired myself a copy of SH4+UBM and I was playing it over the holidays.
I had fun playing with the fleet boats with the TDCs with a PK. I got a handle on manual targeting faster here than on SH3 and the u-boats. :rock:
I think I'm more home SH4 than in SH3...:oops:

Been experimenting with RFB and TMO, both with RSRDC and SCAF and a host of other glorious mods...:ping:

I had excellent time planning surface night attacks with decks awash at 30 ft. They couldn't see me comin' with my low silhouette! Also, at 30 ft it was faster to go to periscope depth than fully surfaced. :|\\:arrgh!:

The question is how to go to snorkel depth? I know fleet boats weren't supposed to have them until the end of the war but is it possible to alter the values so I could just press a key and just go decks awash without manually setting the depth dial... :hmm:

Thanks a lot for the replies.:sunny:

Fleet boats never had snorkels until well after the war with the 'Guppy' class.

Unfortunately I don't know of any keystroke shortcut for diving other than 'P' for periscope depth and 'C' for crash dive.

It's actually "Radar" depth as Fleet boats didn't have snorkels. The ; key will take you radar depth. Be advised that your radar and the top 1/4 of the periscopes will be out of the water, making you more visible to enemy ships....CH

Tried this... didn't happen as of now I'm with only stock 1.5 w/ RSRDC 1.5 haven't yet fully tried out TMO or RFB as I'm experimenting with both mods....

I'm aware that SH4 engine is an improvement over the SH3 engine. As a result of this some functions of SH3 were carried over to SH4, including snorkel depth...

Where is that cfg file so I could configure it. :hmm:

It's kinda funny huh....you'd think the designers of big relatively advanced Boats of the country on the winning side of the war, Equipped with the latest advances of electronics and outfitted with comforts like A/C and Refrigeration would have thought of a tube mounted on a submarine with an electric blower to bring Air into the Sub...oh well

(Whew, been a while!)

Check in Sh4 folder data/cfg/Commands.cfg and search for snorkel to find keyboard commands
Then set the depth in the data/submarine/Yoursubmarine/yoursub.cfg (snorkeldepth=)

On our Japanes subs we used SH4 Menumaker and added a button to the Ordersbar for raise, lower and Snorkel depth. (Since the boats actually have snorkels)

Hey, thanks!:up:

I'll try that and let you know later as I'm not currently on my PC.

They were really a tool of desperation, though.

Pre-war, USN doctrine held that any enemy units, escorted by air would be able to observe a sub at periscope depth. As a result, pre-war tactics revolved aroud deep, sound approaches. A snorkel requires a deptht hat pre-war was considered suicidal.

At the beginning of the war, air-search radar was right over the near horizon. Once common, the snorkel was not really needed since enemy air coverage was not dense enough to require it.

I suppose once enemy air was commonly amred with good surface search radar, the tables would turn again in favor of a smaller profile while recharging.

Wasn't critical during the war, though.

Hey there!

I reset the snorkel depth of each fleet boat to 30 ft (9.14 m).
The commands.cfg file has a keyboard command for going to snorkel depth (comma , ) but when I try this nothing happens.

What am I doing wrong?:hmm: :doh:

You could say the same thing about Germany's vaunted submarine designers. However, they didn't catch on to snorkels until the Wehrmacht overran Dutch shipyards in 1940 and didn't start implementing them until the tide had turned in 1943.

What, you mean the difference in pressure because the sub is underwater?

I just went in and looked at my file and the keyboard command has a semicolon in front of it, that means the line will be ignored. I did a search for "Comma" and I don't see anything else using it, so you could try deleting the ; and see if it works. Unless you have mods installed then you would have to check with the MOD gurus to see if the "comma" is used in the mod. But you did comment "but when I try this nothing happens"
If it creates a problem, then change the key to something that is not used.

I am puzzled, to say the least, about the snorkel in SH4.......where is it!? Even on German boats of the latest ww2 date there's no snorkel and no button to activate it. The only trace I have seen of a snorkel is on the VIIC/41 model, here the well for it is modelled.

I have the RFB, RSRD+OM mods. installed AND in the recommended order, but a lot of things seem to be kind of weird....:hmm:

What am I doing wrong? I think this is what you want:

[Cmd195]
Name=Snorkel_depth
Ctxt=1
Str=1033
;Key0=0xBA,C,"Comma"

Remove the semi-colon before the line that has "Comma" in it in commands.cfg:
Key0=0xBA,C,"Comma"

- and the actual semi-colon on your keyboard - not the comma key - will activate whatever you have the SnorkelDepth= line configured to do.... in your case:
SnorkelDepth=9.14;meters

Hope that helps...

Then, in menu.txt you can edit line 1033 for example:
1033=Radar depth;Snorkel depth

to display Radar Depth or Decks awash etc in the message box in the game

Happy Hunting!

:hmm: Ummm ... I think you have that backwards. The semi-colon is used to disable a command ... and "0xBA" should be code for the comma key. Anyway, try it both ways and you can't possibly go wrong.

Edit: Unless you meant that the semi-colon "activates" (enables) the keyboard command. Which should be true ... but you still need to press the comma key to order your sub to whatever depth you've set it to.

It is the ";" key that activates the command. It could be a difference in keyboards? I'm in the US....

Been using the ";" key to go to radar depth since Anvart's SD antenna mod where I first saw it .... and was confused at first by the "(Comma)" in the line.

I chalked it up to a difference in keyboards and the meaning of "Comma" in his country.

Could be. I don't use the keyboard ... I modded radar depth via the Orders Bar.

Button4Command=Snorkel_depth
Button4IconRowColumn=8,2
Button4Tooltip=RADAR DEPTH
