View Full Version : Problem with textures- Help needed!

Hello Kaleuns!

Because I wasn´t a good and following boy over the last months, Santa Claus didn´t deliver me a big present this Christmas and therefore I had enough time to rework my favoured IX C/40 Uboat! :oops:

I´m absolutely new to modelling, and therefore forgive me my somewhat unprofessional approach to the matter. I was unhappy with UBI´s late-war type IX C/40, and started to work on making a better one. I was inspired by photos of U-889, U-805 and U-858. This mainly means adding things like a snorkel tube, life raft containers, new compass housing in front of the conning tower, and so on.
Mainly cosmetics, but far more realistic than the standard UBIsoft model, I hope.

I`ve never ever worked with a 3D modeling program before, read my loooooong way through tutorials on subsim.com, and finally came up with a fairly good model, and this almost makes my proud like a peacock!:up:

The only problem left are the textures. They are upside down and vice-versa, and I tried eveything (without success) to get them displayed on the model the right way.
For example, the textures are not shown on the new compass housing, and the snorkel tube looks somewhat transparent, see attached pics.
I don´t know what to do, and to stop at this stage is more than frustrating!
It´s like scratching on the door of the temple, but they won´t let you in!

Attached are some screenies of what I wanted to do (originals from U-190 and U-889) and my state of work at this moment. Would be great to finish it and give it to the SH IV and SH III community!

If there is somebody out there who´s far more able to modify textures than I am and can finish the job, please drop me a PM and I´ll forward my stage of work to him/her to finalize it. I absolutely don´t know what to do to get the textures right on the model!

Looks to me like you need to re UV map the tower

Cant help you though no bugger all re graphics and 3d
Off the top of my head you could ask mkubani

which texture it uses.

Depending on which program you use to export and import obj files,
which 3D program you use to modify the obj files?

Things can get goofy at times.

Hi Privateer,

I used 3D studio and Vectorworks as 3D program. The last was used for doing the modeling, the files than imported into 3D studio and re-converted into .obj and .mtl files. Strange way I suppose, but I´m very familiar with Vectorworks and have no idea about 3D studio max, as you can see!

The biggest problem I've learned is the mtl nameing stuff.
And it's most often not the export program that causes it.

there are a ton of reasons that the original export mtl is wrong.
It depends on the original dat file your working with.

So I export and then check all exports with Deep Exploration 5
If it does not show the textures there?
I edit the mtl and obj files as needed till it does.

then I'll adjust the model and export from 3d Max,
again checking with Deep X.
