Hi guys!

Since this mod has been really great I just thought it should be possible to develope it somehow and finish it.

So.. for now Iīve done a few tweaks to AVHīs mod:


1. Added a 6th smoke class for small coastal vessels

2. changed the smoke of big war ships

3. changed the smoke of diesel ships

4. reworked the smoke of coal burner vessels a little bit

5. made the smoke wind affected

So...let me know if the smoke should be ok or if changes are still needed ;)

That's some beautiful looking smoke. In fact all of your screenshots are lovely - what atmospheric/water mods are you using?

When you finish your work I would like to try & apply it to my ships if you don't mind. :yep:

One more thing - Is there a way to enlarge the height of smoke for coal burning steamers? Sources say that their smoke plumes were absolutely gigantic.

oops - I just realized something else. Is there a way to create an invisible smoke plume? That would be useful for some of the small craft I have planned (motor boats, pinnaces, outrigger canoes...) No hurry, b/c I think I will be releasing them after my larger ships.

Hi IABL!

Thatīs how water and atmosphere looks like in WAC3.0.

I also thought of your merchant fleet mod because it would be great to add the new smoke to your ships. But then it would be the best to know which ships are coal burners and which are diesel merchants.
I also adopted the new smoke to wac but also realized that it is somtimes difficult to make sure coal burner or diesel engine due to the funnel itself.

I think there is the possibility to rise the smoke for coal burning steamers but it might be a small conflic with the wind affected smoke.
I have to try!!

Do you have pics of ships with coal smoke plumes?

EDIT: Invisible smoke? Hm.. sure possible but.. if itīs not visible... :hmm: Donīt get the trick. ???
You also can delete the smoke node for these ships... then there is no smoke visible ;)

No.. in Sh3 it is only possible to blow in just one direction.. wind affection unfortunately is not possible.

But until you donīt get a weather report with wind direction and compare the smoke.. youn wonīt get on this ;)

I think I'd get distracted if I noticed it was always in one direction. (But it wouldn't be a game killer for me :D.)

If you add a section in the
Randomised events.cfg?
I'd say they could be different.

Might be possible like Privateer said.. but so far I am not familiar with SH3 Commander and adding ranomized events.

2. war ship smoke darker
3. coal burner smoke rising higher

Nice job, and thanks for listening to our suggestions. The smoke from the coal burner looks very realistic.

Even in an area as "trivial" as smoke there are a lot of improvements that can be made in the next subsim:

-There should be lots of heavy smoke as a ship works up speed, and less as it reaches cruising speed.

-Escorts should emit smokescreens when an enemy raider approaches.

-Other emissions should also be included - steam from steam lines & whistles, condensation discharge from ports in the hull, etc.

I'm not sure that "boring" details like these will actually get much attention, but I can always dream!

Still, you and other modders have done alot within SH3's limitations. :up:

Again I reworked the coal burner smoke a little bit and it seems I ran into a bit of trouble... the first picture shows the smoke.. rising high... like wanted... but to me it seems a bit unrealistic that the smoke is so dense and does not spread.

The second picture shows the smoke of the coal burner how I would like it... mid high and spreading when it rises higher.

I donīt think so... some things belong to wac... otherwise GWx could also expand features, but they donīt. So.. some things for all.. some things for the super mod.

SH3Cmdr only needs three pieces of information:

1. The name of the file(s) that has the setting(s) controlling the smoke direction
2. The offset(s) (if hex file, otherwise Section and Key if text) to those setting(s)
3. The range of values that could be used

If you can provide that information, then you should be able to get randomised smoke direction.

You would also want to consider making the same changes to the rain direction, if possible.

I like the smoke types so far -they are easily differentiable and look accurate-, and I'm not too sure about the colours. Brown or black? I have never seen a real coal ship or good colour pics of them, and thus can't tell what colour the smoke is. I have however seen coal trains and the smoke looked a mix of black and some grey, like ashes pulver.

But perhaps that is the wrong kind of coal fire. ;)


British steam trains run exclusively on coal. Looking at photos of them should give
the best idea about colour. Look for pictures of stationary trains as they produce
less steam.

It is carrying coal that has set alight. I can't imagine a torpedo setting coal alight.
There would be little air where a torpedo made a hole, but a lot of water. That, and the
flat sea, makes me think this is the result of an air strike in the med.

A torpedo hitting a coal bunker, might not set alight the coal per say, yet the airborne dust of the coal will explode and increase the initial explosion of the torpedo or create a secondary explosion. Coal dust is highly flamable.

Something to keep in mind on warships. Those that had oil fired boilers, like DD938 on which I served as a Boiler Tech, strived for a fuel/air mixture to produce little, if any, smoke. Although I can't say for sure, I would think this applied in WWII era oil burning steam warships, also? As a matter of fact having fairly visible smoke would ellicit an angry call from the Bridge! Visible (black) smoke (fuel rich) also meant you were fouling the boiler tubes with soot, resulting in more than usual soot blowing, to clean the tubes, and the possibilty of economizer fires. White smoke (fuel lean) is the result of too much air and is extremely dangerous as the smoke results from unburned fuel particles...and those have a tendency to always find a way to explode. Most oil burning boiler furnace explosions resulted from an air rich fuel mixture. Most of the time we ran with "economy haze"...ever so slightly fuel rich, and it was not very visible. Of course coal and diesel are a different story.

Just some thoughts from "back in the day".

Maybe this should be reworked a little bit with the coal burners ??

Oh, and for the record, HanSolo, if you want I will send you a list with recommendations for what smoke to use based on the Merchant Fleet Mod ships' styling (modern motorship vs old steamer, etc.)

I'm currently changing all my ships with Han's (formerly von Hesse) enhanced funnel smoke for WAC. It's a big job with nearly 200 ships but I hope it will be worth it for more variety in the game. Someone has got to finish this project in the end. :yep:

I've done the warships but the merchants are a lot trickier. I understand anything with a tall narrow funnel is a steamer (coal-fired), but what if it is same the height but thicker? :hmm:

Also I note in the original thread there was different smoke for passenger liners. Would the modern diesel smoke work for these or should the big warship smoke be used?

hello hans, i want to be a beta tester of your mod but i am forced to running gwx3 becuase of the installation problems i have with wac3 . is it possible to run your mod with gwx3 ?

ps2: maybe is silly question but is it possible to run wac campaign with gwx3? i mean which files must copy from wac3 to run the campaign?

did you add another destroyer to the test mission?
one destroyer (V&W?) seem not to use the new smoke.
actually the clemson destroyer uses the old coal smoke ;)

For WAC I actually adopted all ships... so.. no work to do here! :ping:
For stock Sh3 I have only to cut out the WAC ships.

No the light warship in the above picture is the V&W destroyer if I'm not mistaken! :yep:

The old warship should be the Clemson but for some strange reason it's missing two funnels. :hmm:

Also I'm a bit bemused at the moment. According to U-boat.net the C2, Liberty and Victory ships were classed as steam merchants even though their funnels are relatively short. So should they be coal or diesel smoke or something in between? :hmm:
