Hi everyone, I know there are some folks that frequent the forums who have an interest in photography. I am certain a thread to discuss photography has come up before but is probably dropped down to page 83475 by now. So I figured I could start up a new one where we can shoot the breeze, maybe offer some advice or constructive input about equipment and technique, share pictures and interests, discuss philosophy, etc. etc.

A few ground rules:

The thread is available for all members regardless of experience, skill, equipment, or interests. There shall be no attacks launched on others on these grounds.
That said, the core rules of SUBSIM of course apply, so you may want to skip on the glamour nudes of jimbuna for now!
Posting pictures is encouraged but please keep them to manageable dimensions and file size. Perhaps 800 pixels square with a maximum file size of 350kb are reasonable limits?
Check politics and personal vendettas at the door. Any grossly off-topic posts will be referred to the admins.
Have fun!

Here are a couple I've shot not far from my home over the last month. Fall is my favourite time to be out and about, I love the handsome colours and the crisp blue skies.

I might have overused the graduated ND filter in the second one, and it might benefit from a tighter crop as well.

Colour Dance, Fall 2008:

Equipment, well, I have a traditional SLR (EOS 600) with several lenses, but don't use it anymore. These days I carry a Canon A590 with me, always, and that is an awful lot of camera for a ridiculously low price (125 Euros). I would like to have a DSLR, but I wonder if I really need it, and the price for the kind I would like (EOS 450) simply is not worth it to me. It's no serious hobby anymore, mores snapshooting at opportunity. That'S why I have the small camera with me, always, like my Swiss pocket knife. A DSLR often would not be with me when I need it - too big, too heavy.

I love takin' pics but not really good at it. Also I'm not really creative - as in I create shots - but rather I see them and take them. And I also never find the time to work on them afterwards...

Here's a couple of mine:

Nice colours Skybird, for some unknown reason it seemed bizarre to see vivid colours from overseas, but I guess you have trees over there too ;)

There is no shame in sticking to a point-and-shoot. Some mags I read lay praise on them for their small size and macro abilities, and the margin of quality between an entry-level SLR and a higher-end point-and-shoot is rapidly closing. When filled with goodies my kit bag is heavy and bulky and I often wish I had something smaller to keep in my coat pocket.

That said, though, if price is holding you back then keep an eye out. All the big companies are or have dropped some bombshells lately which might drive down prices on older bodies or competitors.

All very nice work guys. elanaiba, that Thunderbird especially... would love to have a nice wide print of that on my wall!

Not that I am aware of. I think it is another small leaf. The photos were made in September, maybe 4 weeks ago, thats why there is still plenty of green and bright yellow. This year I have it with colours, I snapshot the sky and trees and leafs by the dozens.

And she's really rather small for a battleship. And even Yamato was small compared to a modern supercarrier. And a supertanker? More than 10 times the size of the Texas.

Scary, ain't it?

No, it's at Jeffco Airport on the northwest side of Denver. We don't have palmtrees here.

But I have been to the Palm Springs Airmuseum, and really enjoyed the facility. I especially liked the 88 flakgun on display as you approach the entrance to the museum.

It's pretty cool, as every spring there are a handful of WWII bombers that tour different cities across the country, and take folks up for a flight, at a high fee, but at a cost of around 2000 US dollars per hour to operate, it's understandable.

Best part for me was sitting the bombardier's seat while landing. Made me wish I had a camcorder at the time.

My son loved goin' up too. Just like his oldman, you would have swore he was 10 years old again. He really liked the roar of the Wright Cyclone engines as came life on the takeoff run.

These are shot on a mix of camera's. I've used a Canon 400D, my trusty IXUSII which I recently upgraded to an IXUS 80. There is one shot I posted taken from my Nokia mobile phone as well. :D

I also use an old Minolta XG-1 for film. But rarely now as it's cheaper to mess with digital than flim.

Hadrian's Wall was 80 Roman miles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_mile) (73.5 statute miles or 117 kilometres) long[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hadrians_Wall#cite_note-1), its width and height dependent on the construction materials which were available nearby. East of River Irthing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/River_Irthing) the wall was made from squared stone and measured 3 metres (9.7 ft) wide and five to six metres (16–20 ft) high, while west of the river the wall was made from turf and measured 6 metres (20 ft) wide and 3.5 metres (11.5 ft) high. This does not include the wall's ditches, berms (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berm), and forts. The central section measured eight Roman feet wide (7.8 ft or 2.4 m) on a 10-foot (3.0 m) base. Some parts of this section of the wall survive to a height of 10 feet (3.0 m).

Very nice Dan. Those first two are a little underexposed and that third one would be great if you cropped out the top slit of sky.

Which brings me to a question. How do you guys feel about using Photoshop (or similar programs) to enhance your photos? How do you feel about viewing other pictures that have been enhanced that way? How much image manipulation is too much - are tweaks to contrast and saturation okay for you? How about cropping, resizing, etc? What about drastic changes like erasing or adding new elements?

For me photography is all about the composition and that does not necessarily mean you should not add to or enhance what you have captured as long as the end result is an interesting image worth looking at.

I don't think there is an issue with using tools that are readily available to make an ordinary image extraordinary. If you look at some of the old darkroom tricks from the film days a lot of these were incorporated into the digital tools we have now so I can't see a problem in using them.

Take some of the photos by renowned Australian photographer Frank Hurley. Many of his most remarkable images came from his ability to cleverly make a composite of multiple exposures and he was working from glass plates! At the time it became known that some of these images were composites he was critisised, mainly for degrading the documentary value of the work. But does that criticism make the images any less striking or interesting to view?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Hurley

An example of one of his composites below from his WWI days as official War Photographer for the Australian Army:
http://blog.awm.gov.au/focus/wp-content/uploads/2006/11/hurley-small.JPG

And this is one of his single exposure shots:
http://blog.awm.gov.au/focus/wp-content/uploads/2006/11/hurley-duckboards-small.JPG

Both dramatically portray the devestation of war but is the first image the worse for being a composite?

Well said Tarjak. My thoughts are similar. A similar example and my favourite is Ansel Adams, who achieved stunning shots using basic equipment from the 20s through to the 40s. From 1942:

http://www.theworldsbestever.com/2008/01/09/ansel-adams.jpg

My philosophy is something similar. All of my pictures must pass through Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop because I shoot almost exclusively in RAW format - the pictures cannot be viewed otherwise. I limit myself to the spirit of the darkroom tools, as you note: simple crops and rotations, burning and dodging, changes to contrast and saturation as can be achieved with different varieties of film. I carry a couple of useful filters and gadgets like that that help me avoid spending a lot of time in software, but as I'm a poor student that can't afford the latest and greatest equipment, I think it's acceptable to use software to go beyond those limitations.

It's just a naturally evolving process I guess. Your composite by Hurley reminds me of high-dynamic range imaging which does something similar, only with digital captures. A technique that was once criticized so sharply early in the 20th century has since exploded in popularity to the point of ad nauseum.

Fallen off the mountain, Porphy, or is your return as scheduled? :)
;) No falling this time, Sky. Just a very lame try to climb the south ridge on Pumori. We ran out of time, and higher up the snow was unconsolidated due to cold temperatures, so I doubt we would have reached the summit even with some more days. We switched over to an easy trekking peak the last days instead, and got some kind of compensation going to the summit of Imjatse (Island Peak). But that can't compare to Pumori, the latter is a climb, the former a walk with a bit scrambling to the top. Oh well, the mountains are still there for another year as climbers say. Even Reinhold Messner had to contempt with a 3 to 1 ratio of climbs and actual summits through his Himalayan years... ;)

A really fantastic first one porphy

Jimbuna, yes Everest and Nuptse really are lookers. The full moon was fantastic a bit later. Really sharp shadows in the night and no need for a headtorch. I was stunned at the scene, but with my small digital camera I couldn't take any reasonable good photos.
We had excellent views of Everest, Lohtse and Nuptse every day from our camps on Pumori. Evening views like this from my tent higher on the ridge will stay with me for a long, long time :yep:

Photobucket has always served me well. It's not as tacky as the quick and nasty imageshack and let's you set up an account, in which you can set up various subfolders. You can upload up to hundreds of images at once (ie a whole folder on your computer). It allows failry large image sizes and a monthly banwidth of 25gigs per account, which should be more than enough.

It's called high dynamic range photography, usually used for wide angle outdoors shots. I've been playing with using it in unconventional ways. It sort of gives my balcony a Norman Rockwell feeling, doesn't it?

With high dynamic range photography you give the shot a wider range of brightness levels than any film or CCD can process. Our eyes outperform any camera by having an incredibly wide exposure latitude. We see perfectly well in the shadows on a bright day. Film and CCD cameras have a narrower exposure latitude. By opening up the exposure latitude even wider than the eye sees, you can make some pretty striking (and some pretty ridiculous. The method is not without its hazards) photographs.

Here's another one of a very ordinary-looking church on a very ordinary-looking day:

http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa293/RockinRobbins13/KRBC2.jpg

HDR photography loves shadows and reflections. A little Photoshop work on the sky wouldn't be out of place there in the cloud by the steeple.

I'm actually considering to try to get into a photography education in Scotland. Although my pictures lack the talent and looks like many others, I am very keen to learn photography, and tbh, the main reason that my pictures may be blurry etc. is that I have a camera that ain't too good unless it's broad daylight. In those instances, the pictures can be pretty good. (I don't really like to take pictures with flash, I avoid it when I can).

From a scout camp:

Yes, the last two pics are wery bright, 'cause their from my sisters camera, which I borrowed during my backpacking trip through Europe. She had that brightness on the camera, and didn't at the time bother too much about it...

Took a lot of pictures on this last trip back home. Stayed with family in North Idaho. Looking through the 150-odd photos makes me tear up a little. I miss home in a big way. Here's a small selection:

Doggies In The Mist
These pooches were constant companions as we hiked around a nearby ski lodge. The younger, shorter-hair retriever was the most playful of the two. Got into a tussle with the both of them as we raced back down to the lodge later, stopped, gave them both a big hug and got a healthy dose of slobbery dog kisses in return.

http://krashkart.files.wordpress.com/2010/03/doggiesinthemist.jpg

Ski Lift - The Works
A short hike uphill from the lodge took us to the ski lift. There appear to be two guest rooms in the tower, toward the back. The forward half of the ground floor is dedicated to the lifts' machinery. Everything is out of action, save for the guest accommodations.

http://krashkart.files.wordpress.com/2010/03/skilift003.jpg

Control Hut - Looking Into The Fog
I don't ever remember a time seeing such a beautiful morning. Being at an elevation high enough to be in the clouds while standing on terra firma, for the first time in my life, was absolutely amazing. Took this picture from inside the lifts' control hut.

http://krashkart.files.wordpress.com/2010/03/skilift002.jpg

Silent Descent
A clearer outdoor view of the lift. Unsure how far it is to the bottom; a quarter mile maybe. Everything had an ancient feel to it. The lift hasn't been used in many years.

http://krashkart.files.wordpress.com/2010/03/skilift001.jpg

Unshaven Vagrant
Yours truly, smiling as usual. That morning was fairly chilly, especially on the mountain. I had to trade it all in for a plane ride back to Iowa several days later.

Some random picks from my HDD. Thumbnails cause they're huge. I messed in photoshop with one of them, you can probably tell. Most of them are straight from the camera. I so prefer shooting in BW than in color since unless the color is an asset photo, I think it just distracts from it. And yes, that's New Orleans. My church group was on a post-Katrina rebuilding project.

These where taken with a Canon EOS 500D with EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS and EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS lenses.

Huge fan of the Canon EOS series, especially the IS Lenses

I have a Rebel (something or other, budget buy) and A7E (non budget buy) with the standard 25-85 (Forgot exactly its range) and an 75-300 IS

Also have an old Pentax K1000 (my favorite for shooting BW 35mm, used to have my own darkroom) with a full range of lenses, 20mm fixed 1.8, 50mm fixed 2., 120mm fixed 1.8, and a 60-300 3.5-4.x. Also frequently used a 2500mm f12.5 telescope for astral and some wildlife. Problem is getting them to hold still long enough!

You've got some good gear there. You should post some shots.

I've also got an old Minolta XG1 and a few lenses for it that I use occasionally when film is needed. TBH now that digital is where it is I'm finding I use it less and less now though.

Posted some of my work a page or two ago. I'll have to dig through the attic to find my prints from my older days, have a couple I fondly remember.

For vacation and wildlife type work, I use digital, for when I need a lot of repetitive shots.

But When I'm setting up a shot long term, planning on shooting 5-6 bracketed frames, etc, then low speed BW film is my favorite, 64 or 50 speed. grain so fine you can smell it when it gets mixed with the fixer..... yummmm....

That is a stunner; you should be selling prints of that one - I expect they'd easily fetch US$125 and upwards.

Found a nice stitch program, Autostitch (http://cvlab.epfl.ch/%7Ebrown/autostitch/autostitch.html), and it does it automatically!

Got this one from the New River Gorge a few years ago.
Took the wife there for a camping trip to show her where I worked as a River guide before we had met.
The rock outcropping we are standing on is about 15-20 feet wide, you can see the sides on the edges of the photo.

(Sorry about size, I can't get it to thumbnail :( )

O'Brien is moving (under her own power as she does) this Monday according to the guy who gave us a tour. They're unloading all the lead ballast since the price is high and replacing with stone.

SF was fantastic (got home last night). Even with rain. It's cheap, too, at least compared to the city I most often visit, NYC. Such an easy trip from NM that we'll definitely be back, possibly just for a weekend.
