New Camera!!!

A few months ago I bought a cheap digital camera online. It was from Polaroid, and it seems to be fine for closeups of modelbuilding, which was what I bought it for. That said, I did want to take some pictures with it, and that's where I ran into trouble. When I tried to shoot outdoors the pictures were white. I had it set for auto, and the pictures were still white. I tried every adjustment in the manual, and some I found online, and the pictures were still white. I went online looking for help. Polaroid said they'd look into it for me for a small fee. Yes, they wanted money to fix the camera they sent to me broken in the first place.

With my trip for my dad's birthday coming up I went online looking for another cheap camera. I found a Fuji super-duper model at Walmart.com for $59. I tried the store first, but they were out of stock. I ordered the one online and they said to expect it between December 12 and 20. I wanted it for my trip, which is today, the 9th, but I resigned myself to hoping my sister would take pictures for me. And then I went downstairs to do my laundry and found the box waiting at my front door! WOOHOO!

So I took it out of the box and put the batteries and memory card in (one of the reasons I went for this one is that it ships with a 4GB card) and took some pictures. WOOHOO again! It worked right out of the box.

So here are the pictures from my little patio of the park next door, finally made with something other than my cell phone.

A container yard? :hmmm:

Pretty much, we take all little bits (and big bits!) of cargo people want exporting and store it in our warehouse until we can load it up into containers/trailers to go to the ships. We do the reverse for imports, take a load and split it into it's component parts to distribute to the receivers.

I play no part whatsoever in that process :D we are the only department who don't give the company an income. :sunny:

I disagree, here is my working out (all figures are just guesses, but you'll get my meaning) :

Hottentot, leg length ~90cm :)

Dog, leg length ~30cm :-?

Snow, depth ~28cm

If my leg length was only just longer than the depth of snow - I'd want to go home, and not make any more tracks in the snow than I had to. :D

Betonov
01-01-2012, 03:14 PM
Yes, but still, dogs move dfferently trough snow since it has a snow drill and plow mounted on their faces, which makes it easier even compared to our long legs.

im no photographer, never got into it when i first started diving, hence the low budget camera i use. Its a Sealife DC500 - i dont think they even make this model anymore. im in dire need of a new camera now, the quality is atrocious compared to an SLR i have - but the housing for it costs way more than the sealife setup i got years ago

This is a low cost SLR waterproofing solution. A much cheaper option and almost as effective, depth can be an issue if you dive deeper than 5m though.

Where are you at Herr-Berr in the photos? Liverpool maybe?

Sorry, I've only just noticed there was a question aimed at me.

The first one is some sports hall-complex-thing in Pristina, the following four are all Pristina airport (where the Russians next door used to fly their Hinds and Hips deliberately in front of our satellite dish - I wonder if they realised it wasn't just receiving?). The next two are from a little bay just West of Salalah port in Oman, quite possibly the most beautiful spot I've ever been to, with or without the Chinook. :D The last two are taken near Thurmait in Oman, I was in the passenger seat - we both walked away with just a slight scratch, these were taken about a minute after we'd rolled three times (alway wear your seatbelt ). The doctor we saw (British Army Major) told us to go to the bar and have a couple of drinks that night to ease any aches and pains!!! I believe that the Land Rover was back on the road about a year later. (TLAM can probably tell you who is driving right now!)

Here's the bay from a different angle -

This isn't exactly photography, but a little photo tutorial that the dog people here (and why not the others too) might find interesting. Real photography to follow once more at some point. Unfortunately I have lately been taking only pictures that I'm not allowed to share and haven't therefore been very keen on playing with the camera just for fun.

Anyway: we all know the dogs shed hair. Here is one way for you to make it useful for something.

http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/2549/50271522.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/9/50271522.jpg/)
After grooming the dog, this is what you should have: a lump of hair and wool. Technically you only need the wool, but if you don't have the patience to pick the individual hairs and throw them away (I don't), it's not necessary.

http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/4342/96957793.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/443/96957793.jpg/)
Divide the lump into two parts and start working with one. Shape it into a tile in between your hands and then start carefully drawing out the wool from one side so that you form sort of an appendage for it.

http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/7383/63478175.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/535/63478175.jpg/)
Take a good grip of the appendage with two fingers and start rotating it clockwise. You will see that it will become already kind of thread like in the picture above, but won't stay like that very long: don't worry about that at this point, but keep feeding more wool to the appendage and rotating it further. Do this for both lumps of wool.

http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/5223/69785604.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/195/69785604.jpg/)
At the end you should have something like this: clear but loose threads of approximately equal size.

http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/4821/58730324.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/440/58730324.jpg/)
Make the threads loosely intertwine. Technically this process is not necessary, especially if you have tools like a spindle, but I have noticed that my dog's hair is not very strong, so having two threads instead of just one makes the initial thread stronger. Nothing, and I repeat, nothing is more frustrating than having your thread snap in the final part of the process.

Once the threads are intertwined, repeat the process of rotating them. This time keep holding to one end of the thread with one of your hands while you rotate it into tighter thread with the other: it's important to keep it tight at this point. If it starts becoming too long, circle it loosely around the hand you use to hold to the end of it and continue rotating.

http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/6250/58517257.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/259/58517257.jpg/)
Once you have a single, tight thread, tie it's heads together with a knot.

http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/9058/86758229.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/33/86758229.jpg/)
Put your index fingers inside the thread circle. Don't grip to the thread: it should be strong enough that you can keep it tight like in the photo above with just keeping your index fingers apart.

Now start circling one of your index fingers inside the circle so that it rotates around itself counter-clockwise. The circle around the finger gets smaller: keep doing this until your finger won't fit into it anymore. Then tie a knot into both ends.

http://img696.imageshack.us/img696/674/78932516.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/696/78932516.jpg/)
Done! The end result can be used, for example, for hanging small objects like the comb of your dog. Technically it's possible to make as long thread as you want, so if you manage to make the thread strong enough, you can use it as any normal wool thread.

Note to the end: without any tools like in this example, and even with them, this is a time consuming job that can easily take from half an hour to many hours, depending on how long thread you want to make. So reserve some time.

One of the reasons I like doing this is exactly because, no matter how much I try and want, it just won't happen quickly. It pretty much forces me to sit down, shut up and concentrate on something for a long time and gives lots of time for thinking. Plus I just like the concept of turning a chaotic mass of wool and hair into something nice and practical.

That's all folks. :DL

I've been living in this apartment for almost nine months, and the only furniture I've had is a computer chair and an air mattress to sleep on. Not long ago the manager put me in touch with a lady who was moving out, and giving all her stuff to charity. I'm charity, so I took what I could use. I have a microwave and a dresser in my storage, so I don't have those in my apartment but I can't go buy them either. One of these days...

Anyway, my living room now has a couch and a recliner chair, and a bookshelf! WOOHOO!

Everything went surprisingly well, considering that this lad visited me for a first time. I had met him previously very briefly, but fully expected the usual routine of a new dog coming for daycare. Of course there was the routine, but I have met a lot worse too. I predict a bright future for this boy on his career.

And the people apparently haven't changed either. I took the boys out for a walk together and sure enough, some people again pointed at the younger dog and asked: "Ooo, is he his [pointing at the older dog] puppy?!" Yeah, of course. When I have two retrievers in tow, they just have to be related. It's not like it's one of the most popular breeds in the world or anything.

The wind formed the snow in interesting ways. Like in this picture, it was entirely possible that on one side of the street you were barely even stepping on snow and on the other side you sunk knee deep into it.

http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/7311/51886604.jpg
The Särkänniemi amusement park's dolphin still looked happy in the middle of the blizzard. I think. Truth be told, I'm not sure, because the visibility was approximately 50m.

The old steamer took a hit too. Good thing she was docked.

http://img825.imageshack.us/img825/6315/36001903.jpg
The traffic was totally stuck. The media, as per usual, exaggerated and called it "the worst traffic jam ever", but it was still bad. All the major lanes were blocked. The problems were caused especially by heavy trucks that got stuck in the hills and blocked the roads from everyone else too.

http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/6381/54287090.jpg
The city also had some problems, but not in such a large scale. It seemed that the worst jams were on the borders. That is, it was possible to move within the city, but it was impossible to get there or out of there. People reported spending over 2 hours on trips that usually take 20 minutes.

Fireman's just fine (unless female), I think our cousins across the Atlantic use firefighter, and due to political correctness (gone mad) it is becoming more commonplace here, but nobody I know would bat an eyelid at fireman. I've even known a female firefighter not care!

JORDAN RIVER PARKWAY

When the Mormons came to Utah back in 1847 they considered it to be the new Zion. When they found a river running from Utah Lake to the Great Salt Lake of course they called it the Jordan. It's a smallish river that runs northward 40 miles or so. It runs under the street about a block from my apartment, and there is a lovely bike and pedestrian path alongside it. Today I took a three-mile walk down one side and back up the other, just to show everybody what it's like.

This is my place seen from the entrance to the park.

Not my photo. A guy in work asked me if I could scan an old photo for him, it was a bit dog-eared and torn, of his village pub in 1872 (he thinks). I tried our scanner at work and it all turned out a bit bobbins, so I improvised - I put a black mouse mat down, then the photo, then a piece of glass to stop it curling up. Then a towel over my head to stop reflections. I took a couple of pics using my phone!

Then he said if I could just crop all the tears and stuff out. . .

Nah! I can do better than that -

The engine, apparently it's pretty rare for a engine bird strike, probably a lot to do with the cowl at the front, although the cockpit itself has had its fair share of seagulls apparently. Note the little flaps underneath the engine, they drop down when the engine is switched off to help cool it quicker.

Counter-measure launcher, ID light and missile detection system which operates through two systems, one system detects the IR flare of a missile launch and the other detects the seeker radar. From the back, you can see the white and black circles of the rear facing SAM detectors, one of them does IR and the other does RADAR, but I can't remember which.

http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/5818/1006080r.jpg
A closer look a the Longbow itself, the small black circles underneath the dome are sensors for the Radar Warning Receiver, which alerts the pilot that he is being painted by someone elses radar system.

The star of the show today, this helo HAS seen action in Afghanistan, and will probably be deployed out there again next year.

4 photos from Croatia. They're bad quality because they were made with my cellphone. I'll upload more of them when Jana gets home, she made more with a regular camera so they'll be a lot better

The construction was so well, that after 2000 years a hockey match will be played in. And Istra has mediteranian climate so cudos to the romans and Croats and my condolances to the nearest power plant :D

And that one didn't look like it was surrounded by immigrants selling the same colosseum-UNrelated tat like in Rome, that's a plus for me.

I saw 2 street vendors selling some ''souveniers'', but you hardly notice them. Their stand is a folding chair and a wooden box. And for certainly they were locals.

The "long bridge" from Prince Edward Island. Province of New Brunswick in background, 12.9 kilometres away. Finished building it in 1997. Wasn't too expensive, only $1.3 billion Canadian. :haha: Costs $44.25 to leave the Island. They let you on for free. It's a trap! Takes about twelve minutes to cross at 80 kpm. Pretty boring actually. Missus took this photo a few weeks ago.
