Damned Wise Guys!!
:haha:
MY work was finished.
Someone else was assigned to install the handles and Coat Rack.

@TarJak
All the Wood work is Oak.
We made every piece of it, stained it, and clear coated it all in the Shop.
The Trees were cut, rough sawed, and kiln dried by us also.
That's one reason I like Sub-Contracting for the Company I do.
They are 4th generation, old school Master Craftsmen.

Mate!!
You fly me over (And back) and give me the tools?
I'd pitch a tent and live in it till the job is done!
I've seen many parts of this World except for 'Upside Down Land'!
Your Wonderful Home Land is the last thing I need to visit to complete
my 'bucket list', so to speak.
I have seen everything in this World I wanted to so far.
'Convict Land' is the only one I have not been to!
:haha:
Could you adopt me?

She seems pretty well fed. Or is it just the picture?
Nice leash too, I have very similar. The only real difference is that I have a leather collar as well. It's pretty much the only material I'm happy with when it comes to (relatively) big dogs. Metal is a little overkill, or at least I haven't ever needed it. And then those ridiculous little ropes they call "Flex leashes"...well, if it was up to me, there would be a test that you must pass before being allowed to buy a dog in the first place and if the applicant would tick the "Yes, I use flex" and "No, I'm not a professional" boxes, it would automatically disqualify him/her.

Its a he :O: and he is really just a big dog. A lot of people seem to think he is fat, but he really isnt.
And i assume you're talking about the collar with the metal thing, it was just something my dad made at work since the last collar broke.
Ive seen a few people use the flex leash thingy with big dogs, and it really didnt look like something that would hold up if the dog really wanted to go somewhere.

Thinking of buying this:

My camera is a Canon EOS 550D. The difference I can tell is that this lens got the tag EF, while the one I have for my camera, got the letters EF-S. Will this lens still fit my camera? Any help would be very...ehm, helpful!

Should be OK but beware you might not get all the features of the EF-S range. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_EF_lens_mount
EF is the standard lense designator for the EOS range of bodies. The EF-S is strictly for EOS digital cameras with the 1.6x crop function. You may find things like image stabiliser or other functions may not be available on that lens. I assume you want it for low light purposes so a tripod will be in order if you use it for that.
There is a table here which shows what each lens in the Canon 50mm range supports: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_EF_50mm_lens
Good review of that lens here: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-50mm-f-1.8-II-Lens-Review.aspx

Its a he :O:
Darn, I was so on the fence with that one, but finally went with a female based on the frame as well as not seeing...uh, certain manly assets in between the back legs.
Whose dumb idea was it to call them "he" or "she" in English anyway? When I become the dictator of the world, we shall adopt the Finnish way of just saying "it": much less confusion :DL.
and he is really just a big dog. A lot of people seem to think he is fat, but he really isnt.
It's difficult to judge from a picture, so I wasn't sure myself. I looked at the sides and saw something I thought was fat, but then again, my own dog can look like that when sitting in a certain way.
Ive seen a few people use the flex leash thingy with big dogs, and it really didnt look like something that would hold up if the dog really wanted to go somewhere.
A professional trainer I know once said: "A flex is any good only in a forest or on a field." Couldn't agree more in most cases. But there are the certain exceptions: after all, contrary to the popular belief, it's not the leash that makes you a pack leader.

We were once doing some exercises with a Danish platoon on the island of Fehmarn. It looked different after a few days.:nope:

the shifter on the right hand side is to change the gears, this is the semi - automatic version which was IMHO the better one. The full - automatic one sometimes decided to change the gears at the very wrong moment (in heavy terrain) and it reduced speed as well.

The 3 optical instruments (Winkelspiegel) didn't offer too much view. It was not allowed to use them in public traffic for some reasons...

Edit: The Leopard I on the left in the video at 00:13 belonged to my battalion.
This (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_der_Panzerverb%C3%A4nde_der_Bundeswehr) could help you finding an active Battalion in your area to visit.

I wish it was Jim!
This is a customers Home.
The Wall was a planter at one time.
Years of freeze and thaw started a fall over of the outer wall.
We took it apart piece by piece and rebuilt it as a solid wall.
It's now a nearly 2.5 feet thick solid concrete wall.
I'll be long dead before this wall has any problems!
:haha:
I'd be surprised if a .50 cal could shoot through it!

I took Steve's and Growler's advice then. Now to follow: scenery pictures from my home town Tampere and the doggie :D. We went trough the city this morning to walk around a ridge nearby. Pictures of both to follow. I'm not sure why it made some of them thumbnails and some not, but just click them for bigger version.
http://img593.imageshack.us/img593/307/99690202.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/593/99690202.jpg/)
Here is the river/canal/whatever connecting two different lakes. Tampere is located between them and as this is an old industrial town, you can imagine the water has always played a role in it's life. It's no wonder the center of the city is around both sides of the canal.
http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/4657/95445354.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/823/95445354.jpg/)
One of the most famous industrial areas is that of Finlayson. The area has been preserved very well and there is also a museum in there presenting the history of the working class.
http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/7356/42107417.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/20/42107417.jpg/)
The center of the city is full of beautiful old buildings, if you're into those. Unfortunately we just passed next to it, so no photos of those. Maybe next time.
http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/7543/23373022.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/143/23373022.jpg/)
But here is one old building we happened to see on the way. Tampere is weird in sense that it has lots of modern buildings (you should see our library :dead:), yet the older wooden buildings are preserved, inhabited and situated in the middle of their newer cousins. I live next to one such wooden house.
Finally...

http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/1857/95540814.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/683/95540814.jpg/)
http://img803.imageshack.us/img803/5893/70817696.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/803/70817696.jpg/)
http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/126/69625111.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/16/69625111.jpg/)
We reached the ridge. It's quite large area and there are some spots with great view over the surroundings. My camera can never capture it properly and it looks much shorter in the pictures than what it is in real life, but you get the idea.
http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/7292/97894016.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/850/97894016.jpg/)
There are also some pretty dangerous places in there if you stray from the paths. I'm surprised drunken Finns don't keep dying there all the time (fingers crossed).
http://img856.imageshack.us/img856/7348/90160736.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/856/90160736.jpg/)
http://img808.imageshack.us/img808/5701/55707959.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/808/55707959.jpg/)
The ridge is populated with small wooden houses that are ridiculously expensive. It's considered one of the "better" areas of the city, which I honestly can't understand. OK, the view is great but how many times are you going to admire it? Otherwise (they say) it's cold, windy and you practically need a car to even go to a grocery store.
http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/6066/90637023.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/62/90637023.jpg/)
But it's still a nice place to visit every now and then. The doggie thought so too and didn't want to waste time with looking at the camera. He literally whined all the time when I was trying to take that photo.

Wonderful pics! That looks like the kind of area I would love to live in - of course, I'd probably never go inside, but that's just me.
Not worth it. I live on the other side of the centre and it's just approximately 5km from my house to there. If you live around the centre, it's even closer, it's literally right next to it. Live somewhere with convenient services around and hike in the nice scenery every now and then: best of both worlds.

I have to agree with others. Hottentot's hometown is lovely. Where I live is flat dusty desert. On the other hand we're right at the foot of the mountains and have seven ski resorts within a 30 drive, and plenty of water coming down in the spring, so we manage to hide the flatness with a great view of the Wasatch range.
I'm lucky enough in my new place to live next to a park, so my view as I type this is pleasant enough.

Steve, how far are you from SLC? Reason I'm asking is curiousity - I'm attending Western Governors University, and my mentor there indicated there was some reason for concern given the amount of snow this last winter.

I'm about two miles from downtown. I'm not sure what his concerns are. The snow runoff and water supply are well above average this year, but not nearly enough to suggest the flooding we had in 1983. Overall it's a great year so far, at least where the weather is concerned.

His concern was far greater at the beginning of spring and summer; I guess the '83 flooding was brought on by a radical increase in temperature for a few days or so? I'm going off memory of a conversation he and I had in May, I think it was. Glad to know it was a non-issue for y'all this year.

No. We average 15" of rain per year here, and about 1/3 of that falls in the winter as 50" of snow. Up in the mountains, however, the average snowfall is 400-500 inches per winter. We have a series of large underground storage tanks designed to catch all that we can to last through the summer. If the winter is dry (as in no snow at all in 1977-78, even at the resorts) we start rationing water.
The winter of 1981-82 was one of the heaviest on record. It's the only winter I can remember where we had snow on the valley floor all winter long (usually it will snow a few inches, then dry up for a week or two before it snows again). Little Cottonwood Canyon, where Alta and Snowbird reside, got over 900 inches that winter, and Park City recieved over 700". The summer of '82 the holding tanks were full. The next winter seemed fairly mild until February, and then it snowed nonstop through April. By June the runoff was coming down and there was nowhere to put it.

was the first to flood when the drainage pipe filled up with silt, and the Mormons built a sandbag wall around the Church Office Building, since at that time all the geneology records were in the basement there. Then they turned State Street into a river - eight lanes wide and six feet deep.

Construction people laid big pipes in the street at 500 and 600 South, two major one-way arteries leading to and from the freeway, so people could still get there.
Another street, 1300 South, runs eastward down the hill and it too was turned into a river, this time by heavy machinery.
The Great Salt Lake, where it all ends up, rose from a deepest point of 29 feet to 34 feet, flooding the westbound freeway and threatening the water table under the airport, and flooding the newly-built SaltAir resort.

We walk a lot with the doggie, so I'll try to keep the camera with me and snap some more photos of interesting places around here. Probably of those buildings I mentioned earlier. And when the autumn comes and the leaves start changing colors, I'll try to go take some new photos from the ridge if the weather permits. It looks awesome during that time of the year.

A bridge going over the canal. It was constructed in 1920s if memory serves. It's not the oldest, though. Actually right next to it is a bridge that was constructed 20 years earlier, again if I remember correctly. It's still the "main" bridge of the city and goes right into the centre.

I guess you could call this the capitolium of the city. I have no idea how old it is, but I have always liked it as a building. Unfortunately some morons (of course) had to build their market tents right in front of it and obstruct the view. :stare:

Then again, some do. Here is a memorial stone of a battle that took place in Sweden's and Russia's war, after which Finland ceased to be part of Sweden and became (soon autonomous) part of Russia. The war is considered one of the greatest turning points of the country's history and some even call it the first step of Finland's independence that came over 100 years later.

The Särkänniemi amusement park. Well, part of it anyway. That tower thingy is called "Näsinneula" and it's 168 meters high. The topside rotates and has a restaurant with a decent view over the city and the nearby lake. I hate to say it, but I have visited there only once. I know plenty of other places where I can get such a good views for free, thank you very much.

It's almost ironic that right next to the library is this beautiful church. We have quite a lot of churches in Tampere. Them and coffin makers. I don't know why, but the first time I walked around the city I noticed that there is a shop offering burial services almost on every corner of the city. Bizarre.

A smaller church near Finlayson's industrial area. Not as impressive as the others, but I have always thought it's somehow nice. "Small is beautiful", they say. True in this case.
http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/7539/21169797.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/215/21169797.jpg/)
This is one of my favorites: Tampere's orthodox church. The top two crosses are illuminated in the picture by the light of the rising sun. It's a very nice and definitely intentional touch.
http://img543.imageshack.us/img543/8721/33701386.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/543/33701386.jpg/)
It's impossible to get lost in Tampere, because the streets are long, straight and form squares with each other. Case in point.

The market place of Tammela. One of the only two places in the world where you can get this cuisine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mustamakkara) properly. Don't believe the propaganda you may hear elsewhere. The only real place to buy that food is either in the market place of Tammela...
http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/9009/44611032.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/638/44611032.jpg/)
Or the market place of Laukko on the other side of the water. Why on the other side? Well, don't tell the locals, but that place always smells like feces and that was the closest I dared to go.
Funny fact: near those boats even just recently was "a submarine". It was a small prop made by students and parked into the harbor as a prank. Really, it was too small for even one person to fit and you could see from miles away it wasn't real. That didn't stop people from calling the police, the fire department and their aunt to inform that there is a submarine in the harbor and demanding them to do something. :har:
Unfortunately it was gone before I got there with a camera. But maybe it will surface again some day. I hope so. It was really cool and well made.
http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/9826/73019584.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/812/73019584.jpg/)
This was a novel idea we sto...loaned from some bigger cities in Europe. Those are supposed to be public bikes that tourists can borrow and move easier around the city. But being in Tampere, we of course couldn't follow the tried and true method of other cities and had to uniquely mess everything up. So they didn't ever become very popular, but a laughing stock for the locals.
http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/4755/16004524.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/41/16004524.jpg/)
And finally, an overview to the railway station. Tampere, unlike its cousins Helsinki, Turku and Oulu, is situated inland. Our best connection to the rest of the world is railway (that doesn't work, but that's not our fault). The local expression for people from elsewhere is "junan tuomat", which roughly translates as "those brought by the train."
And that concludes our today's virtual tour. Possibly more to follow in the future.

This is not to criticise you. In no way. It is only an idea to get better results.
Make always sure, you take your pictures with the highest resolution which is possible with your camera. Why? You can crop, if needed, and have some quality afterwards left.
When you watch your pictures on the screen, and you are not satisfied with the shot, take two sheets of paper or whatever to cover parts of the picture and see if it is better. Crop then, if wanted / needed.
What do you think of this try here?

This was done with irfanview (freeware) (http://www.irfanview.net/). It is not to photoshop for hours, it is only to make that girl the main subject.
She is looking to the right hand side, so give her some space to look at at the right hand side. Edit: Don't cut there...
The left side of the photo is not important in this case, so cut it away.
The top of the photo has a lot of straight lines, like the background, the table, the microwave, the newspaper (which I find fine saying "tack" maybe for doing the dishes :O: edit: don't cut there)
A lot of lines, so cut some out, and it is done. Edit: Focus is on the girl now. You could easily imagine a little story behind that picture. That is what portraits are all about.
Here is an example of one of my accidents, when some cuts helped a lot: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=1667712&postcount=274

Especially on farms. They're terrible there.
Since we're on the subject of pigs and jackasses, it almost makes me wonder what's under the surface of the Inner Harbor in Baltimore... but then again, maybe not. This place has days where the "aroma" makes living and working in a pigboat seem downright attractive... I don't even want to try to imagine it drained of water.
Hottentot, that looks like the bike equivalent of the lemmings legend.

Aaah, it's not a city river without at least one shopping trolley and two bikes at the bottom of it. It is tradition. :yep:
Anyway, here's a couple from me, taken today:
This is Whistler, he's a juvenile Gull who we suspect wasn't weaned properly because he spends most of his time bothering every seagull around him for food. Why is he called Whistler? Because he makes this noise: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBksJX87kVg All...the...time. :haha:
http://img808.imageshack.us/img808/7264/1005321b.jpg
And this is Jonathan, so named after Jonathan Livingstone Seagull. He's been around our place since he was a juvenile.
http://img718.imageshack.us/img718/9859/1005328k.jpg
Whistlers antics and noise are not always appreciated by the other gulls, in fact they usually run off whenever he comes along begging for food.

Hmmm, I see what you mean. Reminds me of my grandfathers birdfeeder, he used to get so mad when the Starlings kept raiding it. :haha: Snag is, most standard deterrents (anti-aircraft fire notwithstanding) would most likely scare the smaller species away too, or make them mob it. You take pops at them though and they'll bugger off...and then come back again. Perhaps you might want to consider getting a recording of a falcon off the internet and playing it at them...see what they do. Might encourage them to clear out if they think a Bird of Prey is in the area...and then when they've gone, you can shut the recording off and let the little birds back in.

And then they'll grow up all the sudden in one night, jump on your bed and look at you like they owned the whole darn house.

If you ever happen to visit Finland and have a camera with you, I can gladly show you where you can easily take as many squirrel pictures as you want.
Those shots are from my father's backyard. He has fed the little buggers for years now and I think most of them nowadays are already born with the mentality that "human = peanuts". You can walk in the middle of them and they just stare at you like you're disturbing their precious lunch.
I stand by my opinion that it's going too far, but it's not like it would make any difference. So I'm content with just photographing them whenever I visit the place.

This might as well have been the "out of batteries" syndrome again. It happens to some dogs every now and then that they just...turn off, for the lack of better word. I've witnessed some dogs just suddenly sitting down in the middle of running and having blank stare on their face with no apparent reason. It lasts for a while and then they'll continue like nothing happened.
Then again, he seemed to be concentrating on something for the whole time. And I admit that he can do it. Hours of training have helped in improving his attention span.
I'm glad you said 'he', if it was a bitch she'd just be looking at her reflection. :D

OK, now I'm seriously jealous.
Then again, my dog would be half dead before we got even close to those heights and would probably suffer a heart attack or go on personal strike if I dried to drag him there. Maybe this is God's way of telling me that I should not have bought the laziest dog in the world.

I think this is the only sunrise picture i managed to get. (rest are sunset) Only because i had to get my hind quarters up early, topside, and to the stern of the ship in order to get the picture. Our stateroom was on the starboard side, so this picture where you can clearly see the ships wake, was on the way to hawaii.
