Yup, the O'Brien is unfortunately gone - hope the work being done does her good though!
I didn't make it on the Pampanito today before it closed, but you can't blame me because I was busy hanging out with a gorgeous redhead I met while in town :D
However I'll be back to the docks on my own in the morning. Pics tomorrow. Of the Pampanito of course, not the redhead :O:

BTW, a quick bite to eat at the Ferry Building (a few streetcar stops East) is totally worth it. The yummy pork products, Cowgirl Creamery...
Along the way is also the Fog City Diner (closer to Ferry Bldg I think) which we walked into sort of randomly (seemed a reasonable "nice" place to eat with 2 little kids), and the food was quite decent for lunch.
Weather was terrible today, but I'm glad I went out to the Pampanito, it was really great. That was basically all I could make - I was totally soaked afterwards and had to retreat for the day :(
I was basically the only person on the boat for about a half hour, and then a group showed up, which included two veterans from Vietnam who served on the USS New Jersey, along with two WWII sub veterans, former enlisted men from the USS Flasher and USS Blackfish. The gentleman from the Flasher, Mr. Davis (I forget his first name and rank, alas), had quite a few stories to tell. One of the others in the group was recording this on video, and got my email (and I also gave him Neal's) so that he could pass me a youtube link later. I do hope to get that for you.
I'll sort out my (sadly not so great) pics and put them in a different thread soon.
Meanwhile this describes the weather in SF today perfectly...

What red dot? I used to shoot a LOT of night sky photos. Usually using 3200 or 6400 (when I could find it) ISO film. You'll quickly notice that a lot more colors will pop out vs just looking at the sky. I good place to shoot is the Orion Constellation. The 3 stars on his belt are doubles, so they are brighter, and the middle star on his sword is not a star, but a nebula which is very visible via camera as a bright red blob. Another good group is the pleaides, which comes just before (or after, i forget, :hmmm:) Orion. It looks like a tiny dipper, but is actually a large cluster of stars. With a good enough lens and fast enough film, you can get some really neat shots.
And don't forget the lens cap this time. :D

Yes it will :D.
When I would use "slower" film (like 800 ISO) I would routinely do 15-30 minute exposures. With the faster film I could get away with a lot shorter times, but then you could start seeing the grain more. I haven't done it with digital yet, so You'll have to mess around some. But the things I learned from star photos helped me get pretty good at evening photography overall. I have some very cool 10 minute exposures of fireworks displays that are amazing.
Sad to say, I can't find all my older work, the negatives and prints. They're probably in a box in the attic somewhere. I miss my darkroom :wah:

Wow, 15-30 minutes? I don't think my camera can do longer than 30 seconds...well there's the "Bulb" which I haven't really tried out yet (I believe it exposures until you press the button again?) You suggest I use that?

Yes, Bulb is the way to go. It's called bulb because on older cameras, it was an little rubber bulb that would squeeze air, forcing the shutter to be depressed. It would allow you to have custom exposure times, longer than the built in ones.
I have a Rebel something or other, and a EOS 8a (I think, it's been a while since I looked). I have bulbs/remotes for both, and they are relatively cheap compared to other EOS extras. If you are serious about night photo's, you really need a bulb. IT also help when doing telephoto tripod work, along with the mirror function, to reduce wobble. I've used a bulb on my old old Pentax K1000 (http://i.pbase.com/o6/62/761862/1/86961137.9JYDsX1M.pentax.k1000.jpg) and attached it to a 5200mm f 28 telescope (http://astroadventure.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/meade-etx-125.jpg). The only way it wouldn't wobble.

Decided to mess around with a tilt/shift effect on some of my photos from Wales. For those who don't know what it is, it's an effect that makes the image look like a little plastic model or the like. They aren't bad for my first attempt I suppose.

Last night at a car show, a less than one week old 2012 Nissan Skyline GT-R parked next to me. The odometer in it read "000052.3". I asked him about the title fees and all other associated buying costs of it - and he said after all was said and done - it cost over $100,000.00. I had just had my car cleaned an hour earlier, so both were glimmering under the overhead lights in the parking lot. I couldn't resist taking out my cell phone camera and getting a few pics.
http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/230907_2036398787053_1156729612_32530981_1508171_n .jpg

And of course, its engine, a twin turbocharged 530hp engine, giving it a 0-60 time of 2.8 seconds. The guys at the local drag strip are pissy about supercars. The regulations require a visible roll cage if you're making less than 11.5 seconds on the quarter mile. Even tho he had explained and shown diagrams of the car's built in roll cage, they kicked him out after he ran a 10.35 without even touching the floorboard. He said the car's built in race timer read a 9.36 when he took it to a back road.

Thanks. That's what I was looking for. Got to say I was a bit worried not using a tripod but keeping the exposure long enough for blur but short enough for sharpness made it work reasonably well. That higher digital ISO setting really makes a difference though.
Got to say I love the tone in the sepia shots. Very nice feel with the focal lenght in the mirror image.

I think that when photographers take pictures, put effort and time into thinking about the subject, the lighting, the colors, and etc., that it's more of an artsy kind of appeal, but not that there's anything wrong with any type of photo.

This is one of my attempts at HDR photography; turned out better than I thought, most of my attempts come out pretty boring/lame.
I climbed up to the top of the scaffolding on the side of my grandmother's house while they were reconstructing the sides of the house and roof. In my neighbor's yard, he has a sign: "Give me liberty not more gov't"

Sorry, had some problems with the wireless here.
I have done tons of portraits, weddings, birthdays, confirmations, even passport images. I will and may only show those which I am allowed to show to respect privacy.
Being self employed in the IT branch, I once had to establish digital photography at a professional photographer from scratch. She wanted to update her technology and equipment. I was often asked to drive and do an outdoor job for her, because she was too busy. That took about a year.
It was a good experience for me. I learned a lot about middle and large format photography, especially about Hasselblad. That is another world you enter, but everything dealing with these formats and Hasselblad is far too expensive to play around with as a hobby.
The bad thing I learned was, that there is no time and space for art, when you have to run photography as a business.
It is about money (what else), it does not matter if the photos are good or not.
If the customer buys it, it is a good photo. If not, it is not worth the paper it is printed on.
It is a pity, but that' s just the way it is. And from that experience I don' t feel comfortable when talking about photos and art at the same moment.
But, to answer your question, as soon as you have a little reputation, it is not really a problem to get some models. Have a serious concept, do not squeeze your model into a part she can' t play. Trust each other. Be fair to each other. Most of all, have a lot of fun.
The rest is light and aperture, nothing more, nothing less.
My head is full of new ideas and locations at the moment. A friend of mine, she is a sculptor, is going to open a store to sell her sculptures and other art stuff just a few meters away. That is for the younger clientèle. I am hoping for a joint venture to get my hands on some fresh blood / models to work with.
Still waiting for the ultimate shot...

Your red one is special enough. Just cut the edges a bit to make her more the subject of the image. That would suit her fine.

I think Vendor should decide that. It was his idea.
I would say, everybody should be able to show us his home town. Regardless whether it was made by himself or not. Just label it then.
I would suggest, we stick to Fatty' s rules for technical details:
Quote
Hi everyone, I know there are some folks that frequent the forums who have an interest in photography. I am certain a thread to discuss photography has come up before but is probably dropped down to page 83475 by now. So I figured I could start up a new one where we can shoot the breeze, maybe offer some advice or constructive input about equipment and technique, share pictures and interests, discuss philosophy, etc. etc.
A few ground rules:
The thread is available for all members regardless of experience, skill, equipment, or interests. There shall be no attacks launched on others on these grounds.
That said, the core rules of SUBSIM of course apply, so you may want to skip on the glamour nudes of jimbuna for now!
Posting pictures is encouraged but please keep them to manageable dimensions and file size. Perhaps 800 pixels square with a maximum file size of 350kb are reasonable limits?
Check politics and personal vendettas at the door. Any grossly off-topic posts will be referred to the admins.
Have fun!

Thanks Danasan. Glad you like them. Not fireworks. Projections on the Sydney Opera House. I used fast exposure with small apeture to fade down the ambient light, then darkened the shadows with Picasa to get them to look like they were in the sky rather than on a building.

Well, I was wondering how to catch that (with exposure time short enough) without any flash and any blurs. I once tried with ASA 1000 material, which is even in danger of exposure at the moment you put it into your camera.
But with digital getting up to ASA...
Nicely done job, feel free to get you one of my virtual beers.

Because of the extreme ISO they do look grainy without editing, hence the increase in shadow to drop out the grain in the blacker areas.

A mixed breed of Labrador and Golden retriever, actually. Though I too thought he was a Lab when I saw him for the first time. Which is embarrassing, seeing that I have worked with Labs for a few years...
And he sure likes swimming. Just passing close to a lake is enough for him to go nuts and start subtly* hinting me that he would like to have a bath.
*That is, as subtly as a 30kg of muscle and 0g of brain can be.

I've never seen it looking that good before, that panoramic pic is really good. For the photos I took I was just to this side of the pier.
More of an estuary resort than seaside proper - which means it doesn't have some of the big waves like some other coastal places, but because the river is tidal it can be extremely dangerous with moving sandbanks and channels. Again because it's an estuary it gets all the silt churned up by the rivers in the water - making it seem a muddy unattractive brown colour. :nope: Still, the Yorkies (called Comforts - come for t'day!) spend some pennies boosting the local economy. (No offense to any Yorkshire folk :D).

How's the water Around 22 degrees in the ocean, and 24 in the pool, and in the air,28 degrees :DL A little rocky and sandy, but rather a current ... which is common, and good diving conditions.

So here is a question for Better picture takers and editers.
I have some pictures of a wall that I would like to edit some.
I'd like to get it so a print out is mostly the shapes of the stones in the wall.
Kind of like a drawing of the stones outlines so I can use them to rebuild the wall.
Useing PhotoShop is there a somewhat easy way?

You have got some pictures of a wall, maybe like this

Do you want to isolate the single stones ?

I think danasan is on the right track Jeff. It's an easy button to get outlines and even inverted outlines if you need it.
Using PS, the Filter menu is your friend. You should use the Sharpen Edges filter first to get the edges to stand out more then you can use the Sketch/Photcopy filter to give you either a white on black or black on white image depending on how you set your forground and background colours on the tool palette. Then mess around with the sharpen filter to get an image that fits your need.
The only thing to be wary of in this procedure is that the more detail in the bricks, the more lines will get sharpened and brought over in the "photocopy" filter.
PM me if you want to get more detailed. Here is dans Camle shot with the treatment:

Here's the kind of images I want to adjust.
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n12/privateer_2006/100_0235.jpg
I took the wall apart to rebuild it and would like a paper print out of mostly just the shape of the stones as in Tarjak's image post above somewhere.
Here's the wall as it stands right now.
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n12/privateer_2006/100_0269.jpg
I've got key markings on the stones and they are laid out just as they were taken apart but the images help alot.
It's a pain to keep fireing up the Camera to check things so a print out would help greatly.

He's what some would call a "Borderaussie". Part border collie, part austrailian sheppard, but he's all herding dog. He has the coat colors, feathers, tail, etc of a collie, but the body build of an aussie. He's smart as a whip and can jump pretty high when he wants too.
