Hurricane Ike: Seawolf Park in Galveston

Haven't seen this mentioned on the forums here (maybe I missed it?). It's a small thing compared to the big picture, but it's near and dear to our hearts. I was browsing the Houston Chronicle's photo galleries and found this:

Turns out there is the USS Cavalla and a destroyer escort (USS Stewart) at Seawolf Park on Galveston:

Doesn't look like the sail is off the sub, I'm hoping this is a secondary display sail. A mess, but in truth could be a lot worse.

The one laying aside is obviously from a Nuke sub, probably a LA or Ohio class.

Thanks, Steve. I did do a search and, unsurprisingly, nothing came up (well, that the search came up with nothing. It would be strange if no one was discussing the Hurricane at all...). And I don't check the General forum. OK, now that I think about it, my search defaults don't include the General forum.

the sail was salvaged off USS TAUTOG (SSN-639) the rest of the boat was recycled I rode this boat to the arctic in 1983. Great crew at that time.

The Sail is the USS Tautog (SSN-639), a Sturgeon-class submarine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sturgeon_class_submarine). It was added to the Submarine memorial at Seawolf Park after it was decomissioned and cut up.
Point of fact. On 20 June (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/June_20) 1970 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1970), Tautog was off Petropavlovsk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky), located near Rybachiy, a major Soviet missile submarine base on the Kamchatka peninsula (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamchatka_peninsula), attempting to trail K-108 (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Soviet_submarine_K-108&action=edit&redlink=1), an Echo II-class guided missile submarine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Echo_class_submarine) known as "Black Lila." The submarines collided violently. As they departed, the American crew heard what they thought was the Soviet submarine breaking up and sinking. When Tautog arrived in Pearl Harbor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pearl_Harbor), a large portion of one of K-108’s screws was found embedded in the wreckage of Tautog’s sail. Over thirty years later, after the collapse of the Soviet Union (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_Union), it transpired that K-108 had limped back to Petropavlovsk and the collision had caused no personnel casualties. A Soviet manuver called the Crazy Ivan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crazy_Ivan) was the probable cause of the collision.

The sail on the ground is from the third Seawolf (SSN-575). Seawolf park is Texas' memorial to the second Seawolf (SS-197) which was lost October, 1944. The Stewart was in pretty bad shape and funds for restoration are hard to come by. Given the current condition I would not be surprised to see her scrapped. The Cavalla has recently been reworked and is in very good condition. Anyone in the Galveston area would really enjoy seeing her. Also, galveston really got hit hard by Hurricane Ike. i am sure they would be delighted if any and all would come and visit, spend a little money, and help get the economy going!

Wrong. Unless there is more than one sail at Seawolf Park, the Tautog's (SSN-639) sail is certainly there. As far as I know nothing remains of the Seawolf (SSN-575) but a propeller on display in Washington state.

"Tautog was decommissioned on 31 March 1997 and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on 31 March 1997. Ex-Tautog entered the Nuclear Powered Ship and Submarine Recycling Program in Bremerton, Washington, on 15 March 2003 and in mid- to late 2004 ceased to exist. Tautog's sail was preserved and is now on display at Seawolf Park in Galveston, Texas."

The sail everybody is wondering about is in fact off of SSN 639 (the TAUTOG). I have this straight from John McMichael, the park manager. It was one of the boats which he rode during his long career as a machinist's mate in nuclear submarines (from which he eventually retired as an E-9, or master chief petty officer), and he was instrumental in getting it as a display for the park.
