There's always avast!, which is an excellent program...however, you really should upgrade to SP2 and now SP3, as most of the kinks have since been worked out.

Is Avast more better than AVG?:hmm:Yes, but it isn't NOD32. AVAST works. i suggest you also add a password to it so that it cannot be shut down by a virus. Some of the better viruses will look at your running services and shut down anything AV related before going ahead and installing itself.

I get the same Reece, AVG 8.0 is not free and if you got a good firewall and anti spyware along with adware forget it. Stick with the 7.5 as I have.

Reece,

I suspect you got the following -

A Firewall
Ccleaner
Spybot
Ad-Adware 2007 or SE

If so your be ok.

You'll find pretty soon that the support for 7.5 (updates) will cease.

@Reece.........If your after a decent anti virus programme, PM me.

PDNot for businesses. For home use it is free. Their mentallity is if you will use it at home, then you will want the same thing at the office and pay for it there.

I still recommend Avast to anyone who uses the free virus scanners. However, with Avast's latest version (4.8) I started getting BSODs. I went to their forums and there is some issues with 4.8 and some people getting BSODs. I have installed Avast 4.8 on other computers and they seem fine. Go figure. I have since uninstalled Avast and will wait until a couple versions later to see if they have worked out the kinks. I am running with no virus scanner and am wondering if I even need it. I don't visit shady sites, look for cracks for programs, open every e-mail attachment, or go to every site in an e-mail forward. I have a firewall, Spybot Search & Destroy (I love that name!), and AdAware. I may redownload Avast in the future, but for now I don't see the need.

PDPassword protect it, like you should all AV apps. Just my bit of wisdom for the day. You don't want some stupid virus shutting it down before it installs itself. Password protecting your AV app forces the virus to know your password before it can shut it down - basically, a virus won't be able to shut it down in this case.

I use Avira, another free one. It seems to work, but how do you know eh? Anyway my PC hasn't become bogged down with infections over the last 18 months, so i guess it's ok.

I wouldn't know how to go about deciding which free a/v suite is better

If so your be ok. I have adaware, still use Zonealarm (love it), and now I use Avast, the only thing I don't like about these things nowdays is the damn tsr's running in the background, I installed the bare Antivirus option (nothing ticked) then using msconfig unticked the 3 tsr's, I dragged "ashDisp.exe" to the desktop & run this manually to get an update!:yep:
I don't know what Ccleaner is, & I used to use spybot but never found anything with it yet I have with the others.:-?

@ Jim, I will send a PM.

@ joegrundman, I tried this at the same time as AVG, found 2 virus's with AVG but Avira found nothing so I ditched it, I hope Avast works ok!

I no longer use free anti-viruses software but when i did i tried a few, and found Comodo the best, even their firewall is free.

http://antivirus.comodo.com/

I recently changed to "ESET Smart Security" - Nod32, antispyware & Firewall AIO package, which is brilliant.

Always been an AVG User. My dad managed to make the paid version FREE!! Found out he used the 7.5 serial to put onto the 8.0. But that never worked with mine :stare:

I use:
HijackThis
AVG 8.0
Spybot (yes, I like many lines of defence against spywares ;) HijackThis is actually intended for people who knows their computer's processes but for me, it was easy to pick out things that aren't supposed to be in there then I nuked them in safe mode)
the standard Microsoft Firewall. Thinking of installing a third party firewall because a spyware (continously being nuked) keeps shutting off my firewalls at startups.

Shouln't be posting 'making paid versions free' if I were you :nope:

AVG v8.0 is free.

If your after a decent free firewall I'd suggest you try Sygate Personal Firewall:

I reinstalled Avast 4.8(.1201) a couple days ago. I guess we'll see if I get any more BSODs. One of the updates (actually introduced in 4.8.1195) is they improved the stability of the aswSP.sys kernel driver. This is the file that was always mentioned in the BSODs.

If AVG don't work, this isn't the end of the world, I would recommend Avast! or Avira.

This is my config (quite a common one)
Zonealarm + Avira Personal Classic + Spybot + Adaware

The key to the prevention of viruses and worms is a good net surfing habit, NOT a antivirus software with 100% detection rate. Actually, most antivirus softwares nowadays are already very good and capable in detecting most, if not all threats.

It's like commanding a sub. Even if you get a Type 212, but you drive it fast, you still expose your position. However, if you drive a modest Type 206 but tries hard to keep your acrostic signiture low, you can still get a good amount of stealth

When it comes to AV products, there are two things I look for:

1. How does it do against potential threats that has no virus sig in its database yet (Any product works fine against known threats, it's the new ones that are potentially most damaging and might potentially find away around your AV package).

2. How small of system resources does it take, and if it takes a lot of resources, can i turn off the crap I don't need to make it normal again?

The best place to look at this kind of data is the following independent testing site:

Well jim, after trying a few antivirus programs I'm really peeved, AVG was the best, Avast runs this "Virus" in the background called ashServ, damn thing keeps popping up asking if I want to update, and if I set to Auto it disrupts downloads & they drop out!
Oh for a simple program that has nothing running in the background just a simple exe to check and kill a virus if present or found, I like my own firewall & don't want any other crap running, is there such a program any more, why do they all have to come and install a ton of crap in the background!:damn::nope::damn::oops:
Oh wel, I'll try Avira again, btw, uninstalling avast causes some connection problems at startup, I have ghosted and installed & uninstalled twice & happens both times.

Edit: Found this site & seems that AVG 8 may be free: http://free.grisoft.com/ (http://free.grisoft.com/)
Nope! That just comes up with the same errorr as the first post!:damn:

AVG has changed the version number to version 8 for their commercial software only. The free edition of AVG remains at version 7.5. Until they decide to upgrade it, been 7.5 for awhile now.

Also when you try installing 7.5 choose the custom install and disable the "install boot scanner" this checks your pc before it install avg. Disable it might work for your problem.

Okay, here it is....an executable installer for AVG Free v8.0.100. (kiwi_2005 please note ;) )

Not 5 minutes ago I installed it over one of my pooters (XP Pro, SP2) which already had AVG Free 7.5 installed and it worked/updated fine.

This same installer has been working fine on another of my pooters for nearly a fortnight now.

Darling jim, that got your attention.

AVG 8.0 comes in three versions, AVG Free which I got. AVG Anti Virus which has a few more things and AVG Internet Security gives you the lot. Those last two you pay for, so I was correct to a point, well enough of this banter drinks for all. :D :()1:

Just thinking out loud here....your specs must be a bit on the low side if nod32 is having an adverse effect/drain on them.
