Hi,

Is there any shipping in any of the jap harbours ?

I've crept into a few and never really found anything of interest, most are totally empty. Once I did find a destroyer in the approaches to the port, but nothing in there. I'll admit I've only done some of the occupied islands and not the japanese mainland ports.

Are there any mods that increase 'harbour traffic'. I dont expect every harbour to be full of nice fat merchants, but would be nice to occasionally find something.

Would be nice if I could get an occasional report of a jap convoy forming and be tasked to 'disrupt' it.

I see alot of ships in harbors where I get sent to do photo recon missions. I don't care much for attacking shipping in shallow waters though. The DD's can get you too easily in those areas. They are much faster than you on the surface, or submerged, and your batteries won't last long trying to out run their depth charges. Attacking harbors with a bunch of DD's around is a suicide mission. Even if there are big fat battlewagons in there or juicy freighters.

I like to get 'em on the approaches to the harbors. I keep just outside of the shallows by about 20 nm, and just cruise back and forth between the areas where they have to come from, and pick them off entering the area, or on their outward leg. Really ticks the escorts off too. They will hunt you down and ruin your day if they find you. The air around these ports in the daytime will be quite hazzardous to your health too as search planes will be watching for you too. You need to run real deep during the day, and surface only after complete darkness, submerging before first light to be real successful at these tactics.

Give that a try. The approaches to Manila after the fall of the Philippines is a good one for this, and Linguyen Gulf before the fall of Bataan, and the Northern port of Appari in the Luzon Strait is also ggod for this. It keeps you in deep water to perfect your own style, and technique.

A lot of the missions are spawned in the harbors and then leave immediately and the ones entering the harbor are deleted at the last waypoint. So mostly there is a destroyer outside the harbor and a few docked ships inside.

Another good place to hang out is Rabaul. Lots of traffic in and out of there. And as Hylander suggested Manila. I have found a lot of traffic there, sometimes so many convoys that I have trouble getting by to go to the refit station or return to port when I'm out of torpedos.

Edit: Another good reason not being in the port. The ships will not spawn if you are within 20nm of them. So the only ones you may get a shot at are the ones entering. If you stay outside the harbor you get them both, just make sure you are far enough out.

Thanks for the replies gents, I'll give those suggestions a try.
Some of the mission area's I'm getting are getting a little repetative, my last 3 patrols have been to exactly the same area.

I was thinking of loading up the RSRD campaign, but really wanted to continue with my current boat/crew/renown etc. Maybe I should start a Uboat campaign, I've had 1.5 for a about a month now and still not taken one out.
