I searched for Yamato and that's alll the effort I'm putting into it.
I recently encountered two of these in the K.....sea...strait..whatever and after six torpedoes on ONE of them I failed to sink it before being driven off by a swarm of escorts and, somehow cruisers that seemed intent on running over me. My topedoes hit near the props and amidhsips and made four deleteriously prominent holes with little result. How do you sink these bastards?
Any comments, negative or otherwise are appreciated.

torpedos hits in the bow and stern of this ship where the armor plating isn't thick.

Deeper-then-Draft Magnetic Torpedoes to break her keel?

Surfacing and firing your deck gun at her and hoping some kind of weird combination of luck and spontanous space-time warps would allow your 4" shells to penetrate the 9.1" Deck Armor and detonate her magazines?

I like the deck gun idea best. Risky......but stupid. :D

I'll give you 3 seconds, and you won't need all 3.:rotfl:
I got lucky in a Task Force encounter. The first six stopped it dead in the water and then I continued at flank, dove and hid underneath her until the tubes got reloaded and then back emergency, fire six more, spun the scope around and got the escort that was coming after me from behind, got lucky again and sunk it. That gave me time to get below "thermal layer" and silent running etc. So it took 12 to put her down. Practice on the "Battle of Samar" single mission.

I've actually done this.. was running on the surface one day in heavy fog with radar shut down, dove to PD to check sonar. sonar operator goes crazy, so i activate radar and there not 700 yards 20 degrees of port bow is a big BB, so i close until i can finally see her (around 250 yards, this was thick stuff) and just say well screw it and open up with the 4". Weirdly, a combination of 4" AP/HE, 20mm AP and 40mm APs on the same spot (in between the front two turrets) blew her mags and sent her to the bottom.. however it did take 70 shells and all my AA ammunition:down:

P.S the AA ammunition could have been used, while en route to one of the resupply bases in the Solomens i ran into Betties:huh: .. bastards bombed the crap out of me as i dove and as i hit 150' i hear the bulkheads go..:damn:

You know, it's funny how Yamato was designed to sustain lots of Torpedo impacts, but at Sibuyan Sea was largely doomed just after the second torpedo impact forced the damage control team to flood half the power plant just to stop it from capsizing. Essentially dooming it. :)

Even funnier how anime in Japanese culture continues to glorify the battleship. They even rebuilt Yamato in space.
Btw thanks for the tip on Samar peabody. I finally managed to sink her with a 5th torp that hit beneath the forward guns, detonating the ammo I guess. Now to find one for my campaign.....

Which, due to their low muzzle velocity, were about on par with the American 16" guns in terms of their armor penetrating capability.

And don't get me started on Japanese naval fire control in 1944 compared to their Allies.

I've sunk the Yamao with three torpedos. I try and put them in under the turrets, so they set off the ammo. I also aim them at the engine room, so there is less chance of them taking off over the horizion without being able to get a second shot at them.

What's funny is that the Americans discovered how marginal the increase in performance from 16 to 18 inch was in tests of their own experimental 18 inch guns. You really just get into law of negative returns territory post 16 inch. The marginal performance increase didn't justify the cost, storage capacity, relibility, and production difficulties of the 18 inch rounds.

But man, haven't you heard? Yamato was fitted with a fire control system during Sibuyan. It could have killed the US navy thar! Except for the part where it would have run face first into 6 of the Navy's best battleships all with far better FCS that not only allowed them to range over the horizon, but jink back and forth thus making them virtually impossibly targets for Yamato to hit. Boo hoo. :)
