How to find the Intercept angle

I understand that you should be 45 degrees to your target and ahead of the beam, to boost the chances of a solid hit. To calculate the intercept angle, do you use the protactor to draw the angle from your ship's path to the target's? If not, pls explain. Also, how do you adjust to get the 45 degree angle?
