I'm installing it right now, via software update (only a 66.7MB download via SU). It is on stage 1 of 3, which is odd since it is after the first restart, so the "downloading" part and "installing" part from SU in IE doesn't count as a stage, I guess.

P.S. prior to the first restart, SU said that it could take up to an hour to install SP1, and that the computer would need to be restarted "several times".

Update done - now running Vista Home Premium 32-bit, Service Pack 1. Looks the same, and everything thus far seems to run just fine as before. I won't really be able to determine if it improved performance for awhile yet - no time really to do much tonight. SH4 and SH3 both fire up fine, but they were working great before too, so at least nothing seems broken by SP1.

P.S. a little under 35 minutes from download (5Mb DSL line, over a 802.11G connection) to final reboot back to my login screen. The reboots during stages 1,2, and 3 of the update are all automatic, so you can walk away and just let it churn.

P.P.S. okay, one thing that is definitely snappier is print spooling. I have a wireless inkjet (HP 6988dt), and there was always quite a lag in Vista between clicking print, and anything actually happening at the printer. Now, almost as soon as the progress bar starts to fill after clicking print, the printer kicks into life and starts on the first page.

Thank YOU! very much for that link!

D'L'ing it now. Have 3 Vista based PCs. My butt kicking gaming rig, spouses business PC, and my laptop. Can't play SH4 on the laptop because of the video card.

The plan:
Installing Vista SP-1 on the laptop. Can play SH3 with GWX 2.0 on that machine.

Next my gaming rig, last, the spouse business machine.

Looking forward to the improved speed difference in copying a file to another PC. ALL rigs are on 1-gig NICs and gig switches [not hubs] , but it is still damn slow flinging around files larger the 500 meg +. I would describe it as TORTURE the waiting process for completion.

Crossing my fingers that file transfer time improving. Will report in again in the next 48 hours or less.

Again, thank you for that link.

Needs 3gb free on the Windows partititon to install, and my partition is pretty much full (on purpose, page file and all installed software on seperate partition). I can't extend the partition using one of my larger, emptier partition, and I can't select another drive to decompress to. Looks like I can't use this til next format  Thanks Microsoft.

When they say it will take an hour to install, they are not kidding. Got the laptop upgrading to Vista SP-1 and it has been 1 hour and 20 minutes and still installing. There are three main phases, seems like phase 3 is a BIG time killer. It has been stuck at 0% complete for 15 minutes now. Gonna leave it alone and let it do its thing. The laptop I am upgrading is less then one year old and I consider it high end. Hmmm. If you do not have a machine less than a year old, it could take longer?

Seems patience is the MAIN thing to have. Later ...

My oldino PC specs.
Intel Pentium HD 3.2GHz 800Mhz E
Intel D865PERLX Socket mPGA478 mainboard

Worked fine here for Vista 64 bit Premium, was downloaded and installed in under half an hour. No substantial improvment in 3d marks something like 0.003% + :D

Have two more systems I built for others (one 32 bit and another 64 bit) to try out, hopefully they go as smooth as my rig.

Laptops in general take longer than desktops...mostly due to CPU throttling and slower HDDs and FSBs.

STATUS REPORT UPDATE:

Vista Service Pack 1 took more than 2 hours to install on a laptop!#@! Things seem smoother, copying/pasting big files to another PC is faster, but I would not call it a huge improvement, better? Yes. Super Duper Fast? No. Things are very stable, no problems what so ever.

Only thing that has me laughing is Microsoft itself. I looked at the backup status on my Windows Home Server. My two non-Vista SP1 machines show the Operating System as Windows Vista Home Premium Edition. Looked at the backup of the laptop after the Service Pack 1 upgrade and it advises a new operating system called "Windows Server Longhorn Home Premium Edition". WTF?

Also, there is a column called "Description" for our 3 machines. It has always been blank since 10-22-07 the day that I installed the Windows Home Server. Now after the Vista SP1 upgrade, it says "Vista Home Premium" in the Desciption field. I guess the MS Vista Team and the MS Server Team don't talk to each other too often on what each other is doing. http://www.dontcamp.com/forums/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif http://www.dontcamp.com/forums/images/smiles/icon_razz.gif

Update. Ok I tested a few games.

2 of my favorite are

SH3 w/GWX 2.0
and
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. w/OL 1.32

In GWX 2.0 I found a small improvement leaving port. SMALL. Not soo choppy. Even in the bad weather the game seem to run much better than before.
Added mods ontop of GWX were as follows.

GWX Contact Colors
GWX Enhanced Damage Effects
Racerboy_VIIC_exhaust
We shall Never Surrender
GWX 16km Atmosphere
SH4 16k Atmosphere for GWX (+More Reflect, +Less Murky)
My skins for VIIC

Here some photos.

In stalker a more graphic intensive game. I pushed my system till it CTD's but it didn't this time. If your not familiar with this game don't worry about it just enjoy the graphics.

My STALKER is seriously modifed. Using Patch 1.0006 US with OL 1.32 (Oblivion Lost) Normally the game would randomly show that blasted Graphic crash and recovery or nvlddmkm message. This time it doesn't show and no CTD's which surrprised me.

Added mods over OL are as follows,

Acoustic metal stalker minimod 1.1
cigarettes hightextures
Cola wars pack hightextures
food pack hightextures
Stalker Music Mod
Vodka Pack hightextures

Heres some simple photos,

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff110/WolfeXhunter/ss_wolfeman_03-18-08_23-09-39_l01_e.jpg

I've played many other games including Neverwinters Night 2 w/expansions, Witcher, Battle Field 2142 w/expansions and X3 Reunion w/expansions all heavily modified.

With Vista's past dogma I can understand why everybody wanted XP. At the moment VISTA plus SP1 I feel there is a change comming. All my games were far more stable and smoother aswell as CTD free. Out of ten I give VISTA SP 1 6.5 were I had VISTA alone at 3.5. It don't want to give VISTA too much credit because its still too early with its major patch fix.

I hope this help you guys make a good decision. I suggest you get the SP. Remember back up your important files!

Good hunting all!

 Good to know about the sp1

SH3/gwx with Vista should give you no problem apart from the installation issues i had but once up it ran great. SH4 no installation issues but werid glitches and MS trying to install its own nvidia drivers from the OS even though i had a working vista nvidia driver. Problem sorted out after the next nvidia update driver. But yeah other games ran weird at times.

Going to download sp1 update tonight:up:

No problems what so ever.

Laptop on Vista SP1 with SH3 with GWX 2.0 - No Problems -Vista based - game runs just fine.

SH4 runs just fine on main gaming rig - Vista basedi wth Vista SP-1!

Here are some things some users may need to see if it affects them after SP1 installation. Apparently some programs will stop working. Some hardware also will need to be reset.

Good Hunting all.
