View Full Version : Getting started with SH4 Multiplayer Mode

As we've seen before, Silent Hunter multiplayer is shaky at best, as far as hosting and connecting goes. Therefore, I thought I would make this thread to give you a little boost in getting your multiplayer working (I hope) and keeping it rigged for play.

SECTION ONE: GETTING STARTED

Its helpful to follow a couple important points to make sure you get the most out of your game.

Ensure you have an internet connection. :88)
Add the Silent Hunter 4 main executable to your firewall allow list
If you use Windows Firewall on XP:
Click Start
Click Settings
Click Control Panel
Click Windows Firewall
Click the 'Exceptions' tab
Click 'Add' and browse to your install directory
Double click SH4.exe and make sure the checkbox is ticked
If you use Windows Firewall on Vista:
Follow the steps above until you reach the Windows Firewall menu
Click 'Allow a program through Windows Firewall' and allow the action
Click 'Add Program' and browse to your install directory
Double click SH4.exe and make sure the checkbox is ticked
If you use ZoneAlarm:
Right click the system tray icon and choose "Restore Control Center'
Click 'Progam Control'
Click the 'Programs' tab
If SH4.exe does not appear in the list, click Add and follow the steps on the Windows Firewall section
Make sure SH4 is allowed access to the Trusted and Internet Zone
If you use anything else:
Refer to the help file and search for "Exceptions"
Boot up SH4 and click Multiplayer
You may need to Alt-Tab or click "Allow" on a security popup (though you shouldnt if you followed the above steps)
Create an Ubi account if you dont already have one
Enter the CD Key from your game case (usually on the cover of the manual)
Check 'Remember CD Key' if you want to
Pick 'Ubi.com' to browse official Ubi servers or create a game on them
Pick LAN to start a networked or Hamachi gameSECTION TWO: IN THE EVENT OF A FUTZ-UP

Naturally, there will sometimes be errors. :88)
Q: "I get a message saying "Cannot initialise the online"!"
A: That means something is blocking incoming or outgoing internet traffic from the game. Did you follow the exception steps above? Try alt-tabbing to see if there is a security dialog you need to attend to.
Q: "There are never any games on the official servers!"
A: Lots of people experience this. Finding a game is a bit hit and miss, as not alot of people want to wait for others to join. Either stick with it, or try using Hamachi.
Q: "Why is my latency 999?"
A: This is a common problem that I cant quite yet put my finger on. Make sure SH4 can receive and send traffic. Clear out your browser caches and disable auto-login on the main Ubi website (if its set to). If none of this helps, try a Google search for '999 latency problem in multiplayer games' to find a solution (and PM it to me so I can put it here )
Q: "Why do I get the message "Different game versions"?"
A: Simply enough, someone is using a superior or inferior version of the game than you. The latest patch for SH4 without the U-Boat addon is 1.4. If you or the host are not on 1.4, then the game will not start.
This may also be a mod issue. Supermods such as Trigger Maru or RSRD (Run Silent, Run Deep) can change core game files and lead to incompatibilities when it comes to multiplayer. Try arranging a game here with people with the same mods or game versions, or have a dual install of SH4. One vanilla, and one modded.SECTION THREE - USING HAMACHI
(No, that's not a kind of sushi.)

Hamachi is a wee program that makes your computer connect directly to others rather than to a main server. This gives the same effect of being in a LAN, but there are some important things to remember if you want to use it.

Hamachi can be downloaded HERE (https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/vpn.asp?lang=en)
When you install Hamachi, remember to TURN OFF FILE SHARING - if you dont, others can see what is on your computer and nick it!
Run Hamachi and choose 'Join Network'
Input the details found on the game you want to play in this thread (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=133066)or try using the Subsim server with these details:
Sever Name: Subsim SH4
Password : dan
You should now be connected to the network and be able to chat with other folks who are connected.

Start SH4, pick Multiplayer, then LAN, and the game should be listed and ready to play.
SECTION FOUR: SUBSIM TEAMSPEAK

As far as I know, there is no Subsim official teamspeak server yet (but I'll post it here if/when I find out there is one)

Well, I hope that got you started and saved you a bit of forum jumping and searching. If you have any questions, post a thread in this sub-forum with the problem and no doubt someone will come help you. Fair seas, and Good Hunting! :arrgh!:

Nice tutorial.
However I would like to say that everytime I try to join the Hamachi server of Subsim SH4 I got the following message:
Each Hamachi network comes with a default capacity of 16 free
members. Please see Feature Comparison Matrix (http://premium.hamachi.cc/compare) for more information.

Seems there are only 16 slots so I wish we could have other servers or a better way to organice matches.

Yeah, servers that need more than 16 need payment

 This is good KP.

Im using 'Outpost firewall' and it wont let me play sh3 or 4 online no matter what i try :damn: Outpost might have to go i think no matter what configurations i do it wont allow the SH games any other game no problem just the SH series:hmm: - I use to have no problem with windows firewall. My outpost firewall comes with antispyware and everything else needed its a very good protection software - but im seriously thinking of uninstalling it. Even disabling the firewall the games still wont play online.

Check out my teamspeak server..

We have some simple house rules.. all who are interested in stopping by to check out the system we have are welcome to come and look..

Our voice compression quality is set to highest quality.. and we require people to have a good headset with mic that passes our sound test..

We dont tolerate chaos, or mischief that gets in the way of good gaming.

Radio Transmission Protocols - push to talk mode only. Take turns speaking, and not allowed to constantly talk or keep breaking into or interupting others transmissions.. all comments are kep short and sweet so everyone gets a turn.

Great post,
May I add,if you use a Modem, type in your ip in google,go to your modem, custom part, and Enable Nat,This Will allow you to Host Online Maps,Also It is best to Disable Your Anti-Virus Programme,This Stops Some anti-virus programmes from booting you from Multi-player & also lower your Firewall,Our New Community Silent Hunter Site Has More Info There Plus Teamspeak,Plus Lots of Happy Captains,
Happy Hunting.:arrgh!::up:

It seems many SH4 players prefer Hamachi but, for those of you who wish to host SH4 multiplayer games on the Ubi.com server, here's the ports you need to forward through your firewall or router:

Port# Protocol
80 Both (TCP + UDP)
3074 Both
3075-3174 UDP
19000-19002 Both

I don't see any games on the official server. :damn:

Before I go through any more trouble, do people still play any of the Silent Hunter games online? People don't seem to be talking about this anymore so that's why I ask.

Hi Guy's.

Again it's a bad new's telle.

After sitting on UBI's SH4 server for 24Hrs I decided that there just no way it can be made playable for SH4. I was hoasting on the server all that time & got dropped 6 times in that 24 Hr's. Not bad a percent's go I guess:x

How ever no other player got into my Hoasted game? From what I see above many have been trying:damn:

I have contacted Ubi to ask for a fix or a new server set up:har:

:shucks: To date No reply :arrgh!:

I thank you all for trying the Ubi server out & all of you who have given advice & attempted too link up with my Hosting's But I guess it's time too see if anything comes back from Ubi :arrgh!:

If any of you feel that SH4 is worth playing any more online please contact Ubi and request a new server for the Game Thank you and good luck:salute::rock:
