As we've seen before, Silent Hunter multiplayer is shaky at best, as far as hosting and connecting goes. Therefore, I thought I would make this thread to give you a little boost in getting your multiplayer working (I hope) and keeping it rigged for play.
SECTION ONE: GETTING STARTED
Its helpful to follow a couple important points to make sure you get the most out of your game.
Ensure you have an internet connection. :88)
Add the Silent Hunter 4 main executable to your firewall allow list
If you use Windows Firewall on XP:
Click Start
Click Settings
Click Control Panel
Click Windows Firewall
Click the 'Exceptions' tab
Click 'Add' and browse to your install directory
Double click SH4.exe and make sure the checkbox is ticked
If you use Windows Firewall on Vista:
Follow the steps above until you reach the Windows Firewall menu
Click 'Allow a program through Windows Firewall' and allow the action
Click 'Add Program' and browse to your install directory
Double click SH4.exe and make sure the checkbox is ticked
If you use ZoneAlarm:
Right click the system tray icon and choose "Restore Control Center'
Click 'Progam Control'
Click the 'Programs' tab
If SH4.exe does not appear in the list, click Add and follow the steps on the Windows Firewall section
Make sure SH4 is allowed access to the Trusted and Internet Zone
If you use anything else:
Refer to the help file and search for "Exceptions"
Boot up SH4 and click Multiplayer
You may need to Alt-Tab or click "Allow" on a security popup (though you shouldnt if you followed the above steps)
Create an Ubi account if you dont already have one
Enter the CD Key from your game case (usually on the cover of the manual)
Check 'Remember CD Key' if you want to
Pick 'Ubi.com' to browse official Ubi servers or create a game on them
Pick LAN to start a networked or Hamachi gameSECTION TWO: IN THE EVENT OF A FUTZ-UP
Naturally, there will sometimes be errors. :88)
Q: "I get a message saying "Cannot initialise the online"!"
A: That means something is blocking incoming or outgoing internet traffic from the game. Did you follow the exception steps above? Try alt-tabbing to see if there is a security dialog you need to attend to.
Q: "There are never any games on the official servers!"
A: Lots of people experience this. Finding a game is a bit hit and miss, as not alot of people want to wait for others to join. Either stick with it, or try using Hamachi.
Q: "Why is my latency 999?"
A: This is a common problem that I cant quite yet put my finger on. Make sure SH4 can receive and send traffic. Clear out your browser caches and disable auto-login on the main Ubi website (if its set to). If none of this helps, try a Google search for '999 latency problem in multiplayer games' to find a solution (and PM it to me so I can put it here )
Q: "Why do I get the message "Different game versions"?"
A: Simply enough, someone is using a superior or inferior version of the game than you. The latest patch for SH4 without the U-Boat addon is 1.4. If you or the host are not on 1.4, then the game will not start.
This may also be a mod issue. Supermods such as Trigger Maru or RSRD (Run Silent, Run Deep) can change core game files and lead to incompatibilities when it comes to multiplayer. Try arranging a game here with people with the same mods or game versions, or have a dual install of SH4. One vanilla, and one modded.SECTION THREE - USING HAMACHI
(No, that's not a kind of sushi.)
Hamachi is a wee program that makes your computer connect directly to others rather than to a main server. This gives the same effect of being in a LAN, but there are some important things to remember if you want to use it.
Hamachi can be downloaded HERE (https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/vpn.asp?lang=en)
When you install Hamachi, remember to TURN OFF FILE SHARING - if you dont, others can see what is on your computer and nick it!
Run Hamachi and choose 'Join Network'
Input the details found on the game you want to play in this thread (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=133066)or try using the Subsim server with these details:
Sever Name: Subsim SH4
Password : dan
You should now be connected to the network and be able to chat with other folks who are connected.
Start SH4, pick Multiplayer, then LAN, and the game should be listed and ready to play.
SECTION FOUR: SUBSIM TEAMSPEAK
As far as I know, there is no Subsim official teamspeak server yet (but I'll post it here if/when I find out there is one)
