Since I'm really an aviation simmer at heart but slowly gravitating to naval. I was wondering about the Zero fighter in the game. I sure hope the AM62 model wasn't used through the entire career mode. Also Japanese pilots did not employ parachutes after 1942, so am I still going to see blossoms floating down to earth in 1944?

I couldn't tell a Zeke from a flying saucer. I'm submerged long before they smell me out. With or without parachutes they'll meet their doom somewhere else.

All aspects of aircraft operations in SH4 are, at best, ludicrous.... Laughable flight modeling, physics, AI, skins, historical accuracy, etc,etc... My God, have you watched the Betties dive and swoop up again in their attacks??? They have the same Flight Modeling as the SH4 Seagulls! Immersed in the wonderful 'reality' and accuracy of my SH4 submarine, I avoid ever watching the air attacks with an external camera...as well as from the deck of the Sub itself. It's just too sad, and an immersion-destroyer.

It's a shame. I am also a flightsimmer at heart... The air aspects of SH4 look like something from an arcade game from about 1995.

I'm not "complaining" mind you, just observing....I understand that this is a SUB Sim, and the Best one ever imho... BUT, there were Flight sim smart developers whom UBI could have recruited/encouraged to join forces with the SH4 Romanian team to at least have written some minimal aspects of realism into the air features of this Sim.

I think you will find that there will be limited to no historical accuracy as to when/where IJN/IJA aircraft come into play in the SH world.

Davy, yes, the Zero is the ONLY fighter you will see :p

To be fair, there was only about 3 fighter aircraft at Japans disposal that were not completely obsolote by wars end. If you look at 1945, you will see this shrunk realistically to one if you count the ability to produce numbers, although it was not the Zero, but the ki-61 "tony" .... easily the match to the bf-109e and P-40e. There was about 3,000 ki-61's ans ki-61-II's built. Making it worthy of being in SH4 in a historical context.

There was later a re-engined and revised ki-61 to the Ki-100, the Ki-100 was about as good as propellor fighter technology was going to get. 300+(?) were built. Serving in Okinawa it gave its American counterparts a surprise and later was the only fighter that could work succesfully against the b-29's. Making the ki-300 pointelss for this game really.

True. Some MOD's may or may not address some of this though.

I think, in his reference to "the A6M2 model" DJF was refering to the fact that the Zero was updated through several versions over its life. Unfortunately, that too is probably not the case. In SH3 you only ever saw the Emil model of the Bf-109.

In that sim as well you had seemingly fully aerobatic B-24s and Sunderlands.

<sigh>

the only thing i still miss in sh4 are the kamikaze's, i havent encountered one and to be honest it would be a cool feature as well.

In SH4, it may have been something I opened with S3D, you can decide if the aircraft is a 'level' bomber, or a 'dive' bomber. Can't tell you where this was off the top of my head, but it makes a big difference to their antics :p

@sailor steve : i know but when ur near a friendly taskforce or so in the area of midway then it would be nice to see some kamikaze action wouldnt it? in my opinion it would.

Sorry, Sturmer. Your post seems to be a reply to nothing, and that's my fault. I realized I was parroting what was said in another thread and thought somehow I had misposted. I deleted my reply before I noticed you had answered it.

I agree that that kind of behavior would be interesting, but I sure wouldn't want to encounter one!

Again, I apologize.

To make a Kamikaze, treat the plane physically as an airborn acoustic torpedo and put a plane model skin on it? you would have to drop them from other aircraft though

Not sure if you could do it, but I dont see why you cant skin an item in SH4 with whatever you want.

Totally pointless in the context of the game.

I was rather stunned to find this in wikipedia under the lisiting for the USS Devilfish.

Assigned to the area between Sagami Wan and the northern Nanpō Islands, Devilfish was attacked by a kamikaze plane on 20 March 1945 before she entered her patrol area. The plane crashed her as the submarine was submerging, destroying the mast structure and causing serious leakage. Devilfish returned to Saipan and Pearl Harbor for repairs, departing Pearl Harbor 20 May on her third patrol.

I guess there was an instance where a kamikaze attacked a sub. Assuming it's accurate, ya learn something new every day. :hmm:

Yes. I was wondering if the Zero model changed during the course of the war and it looks like no. Pity, I would've thought an 'immersive' and 'realistic' sim would reflect that. As for the Divine Wind idea it would imo be nice to see in the later years attacking allied ships off Okinawa.:yep:

Yep, only one model of the Zero... time spent could fix that.

Still, I am enjoying these ideas  you never know when someone might have the time to do this.

Interesting read on the Devilfish, I wonder if it was a Kamikaze or a deranged angry pilot. I have heard of fighter pilots trying to dive into torpedos to save carriers, so anything is possible.
