Hello , please can you tell me how configure the firewall exceptions to open a server to play multiplayer ?, I normally play multiplayer but cannot open a server ( give me zero Ping ):hmm: , below are the ports to be open , but I dont understand how to open the first in the list because the first dont have the name :hmm: and because I dont know how to open the ports " 17997 through 18003 " how to type the word "through" in the firewall :hmm: ? thank you for your help

SH3's multiplayer abilities allow you to play either on UbiSoft hosted game servers or on privately hosted LAN and Internet based servers.
The following TCP and UDP ports should be opened to allow for SH3 multiplayer gaming:
TCP/UDP ports 17997 through 18003 - allows up to 8 players to join
TCP port 667 - UbiSoft ping
TCP/UDP ports 40000 through 42000 - Ubi.com
TCP/UDP port 43500 - Ubi.com2

I am not an expert, but are you using a router? I know that routers sometimes have a firewall as well. When you then deactivate or alter the firewall on your pc, the firewall in your router still blocks creating a ping.
Just an idea...

Just want to point out one thing. If you're using a router you won't have any problems connecting to play on another's hosted server game. However, if you want to host a game yourself, you'll need to set your pc/router up to permit doing that. If you don't, you wind up with a zero ping and no one will be able to connect to your game.

You need to port forward your router specific to SHIII. An easy and excellent way to do so is to go to http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm. First you'll see a comprehensive listing of routers. Select and click on yours. Then scroll down to the bottom and select and click Silent Hunter III. Yep, that's right: Port Forward already has the game requirements for SHIII. Just follow the instructions to set up your router for port forwarding and you'll be able to host your own online multiplayer games!

It doesn't have anything with regards to this crappy MS WindowsXP firewall does it?
Everytime Koondawg tries connecting to me he says I don't have a ping, I'm not sure why cause I've even tried cutting my firewall before hosting... I'm stumped! :nope:

First off, can you verify whether or not you are connecting to the internet via a router or not? Routers are almost always the problem. If you aren't connecting via a router (that is, your pc is directly connected to the cable modem, DSL modem, etc. and is the only pc on that 'network') then I'll try investigating further for you.

This is not true in every case. It depends very much on the policy of your Firewall.
If you are running your FW with a ALLOW_ALL strategy this may work, but if it is a DENY_ALL strategy it will not for shure.

I refuse to use a router for both my computers, I won't go through the hassle I was put through as a kid trying to share the internet with my sister on a router that wouldn't hold a connection at all..

I've got a Westell DSL modem. Works fine, nice and fast, just don't know what's prohibiting people from seeing my ping...

I need to know the exact type of modem. Is it a Westell Wirespeed by any chance?

It's what they call a 'LiteLine' Modem:

Westell 6100
http://www.westell.com/broadband-home-networking/liteline-modems.html

Model number: E90-610030-06

[EDIT]
AT&T had installed a bunch of extra security crap on my machine on top of what I already had when I plugged in the modem, I uninstalled that, but when I clicked on that site link I could've sworn it said there's built in security in that modem itself. If true, is there a way to bypass it?

Ok, you might want to try this:

Go to www.portforward.com (http://www.portforward.com). Normally that's for setting up your router for prt forwarding (which will open up your port settings to enable you to host). But under their list of routers is the Westell 6100.

What you'd want to try is going to www.portforward.com (http://www.portforward.com).

Halfway down that page you'll see this: "Our Routers section offers detailed walkthroughs on how to setup port forwarding. These how to guides make it easy to setup your router or firewall for any application you may need. " Click on "Routers".

On that page scroll down to the Westell listings (they are on the far right-hand side) then click on the Westell 6100 link.

Next click on the Silent Hunter III link.

Just follow the instructions that appear and you should be able to set your modem up to permit hosting.

Hope this helps!

As I had problems too, I contacted the UBI solution center and found out the following.
I use a router with firewall (NAT,statful inspection,DENY_ALL)

Portforward from internet to my own private IP 192.168.1.10
UDP 17997
TCP 18000
UDP 18001
TCP 40000-42999
UDP 41006
UDP 44000
UDP 45000-45001

The DENY_ALL rule in my firewall requires some additional stuff.

Allow traffic from my own private IP 192.168.1.10 to internet
TCP Ports 18000,40000-42999
and
UDP Ports 17997,18001,41006,44000,45000-45001
and allow traffic from Internet to my own private IP 192.168.1.10
TCP 18000
and
UDP 17997,18001

But its not done. For now I can see hostet games in the list, can join them and play.
I can create a game, the others see it in the list, but they do not see a ping and can not join.

Addendum: You can change the Port TCP 18000 in a range of 17997-18003 in the main.cfg but there is absolutely no need to map them all.
