Disappearing smoke?

Hi, I have this game and the only real problem I have with it is that when I hit a ship, and it's burning and smoking, the smoke and fire will flicker in and out. It's kind of irritating.

Is there a way I can fix this?

I'm not aware of anyone who's done any work on the particle sysyem but there are files with values that might be tweaked. Its partly in German so its a case of trial and error.
