Hi Neal,

I just realized the option to support subsim by accessing amazon via the subsim store.
I tried through http://www.subsim.com/store_de.html but could not found any hint on the amazon site that they would credit subsim for the sale.

Is this normal or do I have to make something in another way?

PS: It's christmas shopping time :yep:

A lot of people tell me the same thing, the process is transparent, so as long as you start your Amazon shopping by using the search box or any of the item links on the Subsim store pages below, the code should give Subsim the credit for the sale. You can seach for a laptop, it sends you to Amazon. Maybe you decide not to buy the laptop but you see that DAS BOOT Uncut DVD set or a nice necklace for your sweetie. As long as you started from the Subsim page and used it to get to Amazon, Subsim gets 6.5% and it costs you nothing extra. Thanks for asking, this does need to be repeated occasionally. If everyone who used the Subsim forums would take this extra step and use the Subsim search for Amazon, we wouldn't need donations or advertising at all!

They give you 6.5% of the item's price? That is more than I would have estimated. I wouldn't even have expected a 1 in front of the decimal. If I were you I would make using subsim for amazon orders obligatory for forum-membership and then stop working! :D

Ha, you have have seen it back in 2000-2002, Chips and Bit were giving me a 20% commission on game sales :D In those days, I didn't bother with advertising at all.

If Amazon only paid 1%, man, that would not even be worth setting up and maintaining the links. The thing is, a lot of people are not aware of the Subsim/Amazon affiliation. If I remind people too much, I become a nagging telemarketor  ; if I don't mention it enough, they never know about it.

Send an email to everybody, and mention the numbers. I really did not know that it is so much, and maybe many people know about the deal, but think it is too minor as if their participation would make any difference at all: "These Texan oil barons all are millionairs, so if I order that bundle of items for 50 dollars, what use could it have for Neal to earn 20 cents from that?" :D

:yep: That must be at least me. I only learned through one of those posts about GWX donations how this site is kept up, and what some numbers are.

Maybe you create a part in the FAQ or in the GT with the topic: "How this site is run"? :hmm: Hell, maybe it is there, but until now, it didn't came to my eye

Have you got (or tried to obtain) a debit card (the sort that you can use to make withdrawals from Cash machines) from your bank?

As you are not borrowing money from the bank, they are more likely to issue one of these - never even had to ask for mine, they just sent it automatically.

Hoo boy, some nice gent just ordered this sweet deal through the Subsim Amazon search box! (http://www.subsim.com/store.html)

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41oE8otsNhL._AA280_.jpg

I want to say thanks, mate. This Speed Cart cost nothing extra to the customer, but Subsim received a $14 commission for this. :woot:

And another fine fellow took a moment to use the Subsim Amazon search box to start his Amazon shopping, andordered some Adobe software.

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41KdUia451L._SL500_AA280_.jpg

Again, by taking just a second to start his shopping on the Subsim Store page and using the search box (http://www.subsim.com/store.html), he was able to exploit the system and help Subsim, at no extra cost to him. :salute:

Thanks, guys!

Oh hey I have a question about the Amazon link - if I copy the URL of the Amazon link that's here and paste it into the Properties of any other links to Amazon that are currently on my computer, will that have the same effect as clicking through from here?

Onkel Neal
01-26-10, 07:31 AM
hi Frau, no, I am not sure that will work. One of the drawbacks to the way Amazon works is I cannot test the links very well. But I have had consistent results when someone uses the search box to start their trip to Amazon, even if they search again once on the Amazon page and buy some completely different product than their original search.

Does that help? Thanks :salute:

frau kaleun
01-26-10, 08:23 AM
Yes, thanks, I wanted to know because I'm in and out of Amazon a lot and have links to there all over the place on my computer, makes it too easy to forget and click on one of them when I'm in a hurry. I'll just change them so they point to a page here that links to there. :)

Well, I know the SH2+SH3 bundle for $9.99 is Starforce free, I got a couple copies of that. And if I am not mistaken, SH4+U-boat missions had the copy protection removed with patch 1.5.

Hi Neal,

The the SH2+SH3 bundle seems only to be available at Amazon US and when I
try to order them for my country (Netherlands) I get a message stating that it
isn't available for that country.
I googled around, but failed to find that bundle elsewhere.

the subsim shop, or you bought them for yourself?

If for sale, how can I order them?

That's what I always end up using as well, since I made all my shortcuts to Amazon point there instead.

I just realized I don't see an Amazon search box at the top of the forum pages, probably because of the ad-blocking I set up in IE. I had to edit the "allowed" list manually to see it on the SS Store page so I'll have to do the same for the forum link as well.

Anyway, it all still counts, right?

I've bought lots of stuff from Amazon lately, and always through here, but I keep forgetting to list them.

JAG, season 5 was one.

Videos mostly, but I did buy a Behringer 550-watt bass amp. $326.

Oh, and I paid $79 for Amazon Prime, which means I'm now getting free two-day delivery on pretty much everything. When I got the amp head I figured it was time.

I got it when I did my Christmas shopping there last year - they had a free 30 trial. After the 30 days I just paid the $79 and I'll almost certainly renew it. It's well worth not paying any shipping costs, and still getting the 2-day turnaround, on everything Amazon sells. Plus I've found quite a few third party sellers have their orders fulfilled by Amazon and the Prime advantages apply to them as well.

...free 30 trial.
Same here. After the thirty days I was surprised by an unexpected withdrawal from my account, and was going crazy trying to figure out what I'd spent exactly $79 on. Once it hit me I realized that I'm averaging a video and a piece of music about once per week, and that doesn't include other stuff.

So now I figure I'm paying less for two-day shipping than I was for regular shipping, which is at least $2.98 a pop. considering I paid $50 bucks for regular shipping when I bought a speaker cabinet from an online source, free two-day is fantastic for the amp head to go with it. The only thing that equals it is Walmart and Guitar Center's 'Free shipping to store', and that takes a lot longer than two days. :sunny:

Steve, nothing of your showed up. I know it's a few months after the fact, but can you use that professor brain of yours to recall which links or what path you took from Subsim to Amazon ? I have to fix that, you'are about 16% of the store revenues, Mr. Sailor Trump.

I'm asking my mother to order a few items through the main Subsim store http://www.subsim.com/store.html to help me trust the tracking, too. Wish I could order through my own store to check but Amazon forbids this.

thanks and thanks again to all who order through the Subsim store search box and then list the goodies here to help me stay on top of things.

Nope, wasn't me. But as we well know I'm hardly the only musician here.

I finally have myself trained to always go through Subsim, after all the times I just plain forgot. My recent purchases have been limited to videos. I'm up to season 9 of JAG and season 6 of Smallville, and am about to order the next ones. I also finally picked up a DVD copy of I, Claudius.

No, I've only downloaded music so far. Never bought anything else as a digital download. Glad to know the MP3 downloads pay the Subsim kickback, since unless it's something I really want to have on disc and it's roughly the same price it's just so much easier to buy the download. :yeah:

Hopefully all goes well and you don't end up with too many *extra* parts... :D

What I'll end up with is a second, lower end, working computer that I have no use for. :O:

Which is not so bad, I was thinking of taking it to work and using it there - where it would still be miles ahead of what I've got in my office - or selling it to the computer shop down the road. Their ad says if you have a working PC that shipped with XP on it, they'll buy it. The ad was a bit old but I was in there poking around their used parts yesterday and they were in the process of selling an XP rig to somebody, so...

Also they had quite a selection of used components and cables and just about everything you can think of - nothing I wanted right now, unfortunately, but a lot of stuff I thought was too obsolete to be of interest to anyone. Which means I may be able to go through my growing collection of leftover bits and pieces of old rigs and make a couple bucks off of them. Plus there's stuff at work that my boss keeps asking me if I want, maybe I should start saying "yes" to that question. :hmmm:

Fish In The Water

...I was thinking of taking it to work and using it there - where it would still be miles ahead of what I've got in my office...

Boy does that ever bring back memories... I used to do desktop technical support in a large call centre and they had us sorting out XP issues on rigs that were running Windows 2000.

Friggin' OS was so unstable it would periodically crash whenever you opened more than 3 or 4 windows, so you had to do the two-step phone ad lib while the system rebooted. :damn:

Getting back on topic though, I've got so many pieces of old rigs kicking about that I've pretty much lost track of them all. Still that doesn't deter me from collecting more :03:, so if it was my boss offering extra parts, I'd definitely take him (or her) up on it.

I keep telling myself, you never know when you might need it, and come to think of it I can actually recall an after hours HDD crash when I was able to swap out an old one and get back up and running even though the stores were all closed.

Flimsy justification though that might be, it's good enough for me to justify my ever growing collection of largely obsolete parts. Then again if anyone ever needs a Pentium 1 with an amazing 40 GB hard drive I can always hook 'em up! :O:

Actually I started out on DOS then Windows 3.1 then '95...

While it's true each incarnation seemed like a huge step up, they were all very early in the era of the home PC. Kind of like going from Jurrasic to Cretaceous, a noticeable improvement but still very primitive. :O:

Our first PCs at work didn't even have CD drives, which made it interesting when you needed to install or reinstall, say, MS Word or Outlook or the software that made your printer work, all of which came on CD. :damn:

I can remember playing the old King's Quest by Sierra. It came on something like 17 floppy disks, and being an adventure game, you had to change floppies (and wait for it to load) almost every time you walked off the edge of the screen.

It went something like this:

Walk, walk, walk...

Please insert disk 13...

Okay where's disk 13?

Oh, there it is...

Okay open the door and remove disk 7...

Insert disk 13 and close door...

Wait ,wait and wait some more for that awesome floppy seek time...

Walk across the screen and repeat... :har:

Oh and they shipped me Terry Pratchett's new book "Snuff" today, but I preordered it ages ago. I'm pretty sure I used the Subsim linky to get there to make the preorder, but I don't know if stuff like that shows up when the order is placed or when it's shipped. I'm guessing when it's shipped because that's when they'd be charging me for it. :hmmm:

The Emperor's Coloured Coat

I wish I had never seen this, because I had to go look it up. Now I find it's from a series of novels I am probably going to have to order, if only because the titles are so awesome:

A Sailor of Austria: In which, without really intending to, Otto Prohaska becomes Official War Hero No. 27 of the Habsburg Empire

The Emperor’s Coloured Coat: In which Otto Prohaska, future hero of the Habsburg Empire, has an unexpectedly interesting time while not quite managing to avert the First World War

The Two-Headed Eagle: In which Otto Prohaska takes a break as the Habsburg Empire's leading U-Boat ace and does something even more thanklessly dangerous

Tomorrow the World: In which Otto Prohaska carries the Habsburg Empire's civilizing mission to the entirely unreceptive peoples of Africa and Oceania

Yep, definitely going on my wish list. :yep:

Hey, why are we laughing? Those would be *great* stories....

I must say, though, my unofficial official goal now is to hear everything Beethoven ever wrote. Everything that has been published, performed, and recorded, anyway. Knowing men, he probably wrote several unpublished, mercifully brief lieder in honor of his penis, his prodigious sexual achievements, and the smell of his own flatulence. Only his pianoforte and chamber pot know for sure. :O:

For other people. :O:

OTOH while I was out getting some stuff locally I stopped at a nearby Half Price Books and got some great used CDs. All Beethoven but one, and mostly stuff I didn't already have except for there was a 9th symphony with Jon Vickers singing tenor (MUST HAVE!! JON VICKERS!! also I'm kinda collecting different versions of that one anyway) plus a 5th piano concerto with Leon Fleisher/Szell/Cleveland Orchestra (classic, absolute must have).

What I may do this year instead of blowing all my leftover Christmas bonus money on CDs and whatnot, is buy some tickets to the Cinci Symphony Orchestra for the 2011/2012 season. They have Beethoven on two programs in February and one in March. :yeah:

But Amazon is giving out extra rewards points on music downloads until the end of the year, so I expect I may treat myself to a little something. :yep:

For other people. :O:

And now, for me:

1 of: Beethoven [13 CD Box Set] [Audio CD]
By: Ludwig van Beethoven, Herbert von Karajan

A ginormous set, the complete 1980s symphony cycle and Missa Solemnis, the violin concerto with Mutter from 1979(?), and a ton of other stuff... basically at least one version of everything in his entire recorded Beethoven repertoire. And only $40. Just released last month which I guess is why I hadn't come across it before.

I know some people hate Karajan for a wide variety of reasons, but I've never been disappointed in any of the recordings he made with the BPO and this set mostly features them with IIRC a few bits done with their Viennese counterparts (who are not too shabby either :O:).

But Amazon is giving out extra rewards points on music downloads until the end of the year, so I expect I may treat myself to a little something. :yep:

And then there's the digital stuff:

1 of: Beethoven: Für Elise; Eroica Variations, Op.35; 6 Bagatelles Op.126; 6 Ecossaises WoO83 [MP3 Download]
1 of: Beethoven: Diabelli Variations [MP3 Download]
1 of: Beethoven: Complete works for Winds and Brass Vol. 1 [MP3 Download]
1 of: Beethoven: Complete works for Winds and Brass Vol. 2 [MP3 Download]
1 of: Beethoven, L.: Piano Trios (Complete) (Eisenstadt Haydn Trio) [MP3 Download]
And a very Ludwig van Christmas was had by... me! :D

Frau, you must have the biggest LVB collection in the nid-west by now :)

You'd think that, until you compared it with the complete list of his works. :wah:

TBH I'm actually working on a little database to keep track of what I have and what I don't, because I'm getting to the point where I see CDs at Half Price books and then can't remember whether it's something I have yet to add to the collection, or is something I already have in multiple versions because really you can never have too many performances of the 9th symphony or Emperor concerto from which to choose. :shifty:

Besides, what else am I gonna do with MS Access? :haha:

Edit: OH HEY tomorrow is LVB's birthday. Or his assumed birthday, since records show he was baptized on the 17th and that was usually done the day after the birth.

If he were alive today, he'd be 241 years old. :D

I have the absolute complete Beethoven, as well as the absolute complete Bach. While that includes all of the rarest stuff, it does only contain one recording of each, so FK probably has more different recordings of individual symphonies than I do.

Oh dear lord I've got at least two versions of each. And about 10 of the Ninth. Favorites like the violin concerto and last piano concerto, I dunno, 4 or 5 versions. Sometimes I find a used CD that can't be passed up because of the performer(s) involved. I have "complete" sets of things only because I got them used and therefore cheap and they are historically important but the recordings are way old so the quality is not great even though the performances are wonderful, so eventually I go looking for a more modern set with a different performer that I know I like.

And then there's the fact that some of the really rare stuff, you can't just *buy* without getting it as part of a bigger collection that includes stuff you've already got. I'm looking at a CD set of the string quartets & quintets right now even though I've got much of it on hand already because it includes alternate versions, unfinished pieces, all the rare stuff that almost never gets recorded.

Thank the lord for that, I was beginning to think the buggas were cherry picking what to give commission out on.

Either that or I hadn't used the link correctly and I was confident I had :smug:

I was gonna say... I don't think pics of my work knickers are gonna be very exciting. I buy them for comfort and ease of laundering and the process is basically one of picking out a brand name, finding some plain white briefs... and then deciding on a size. Which usually involves having a peek at what I'm currently wearing, asking myself if I'm completely and totally comfortable wearing it, and then going one size higher. :haha:

Well, I'm only debt free until the mortgage. Then I will have... a mortgage. Like a real grown up person even. You'll know when I sign the papers, cuz there'll be a shudder and a slight jolt as the world stops revolving. :O:

Just ordered Peter Padfield: Maritime Power and Struggle For Freedom: Naval Campaigns that Shaped the Modern World 1788-1851 and
Maritime Dominion: Naval Campaigns that Shaped the Modern World, which covers 1852 to the present day. Total cost with shipping was about $20.

I also pre-ordered the reissued volume of R.A. Burt's British Battleships of World War One. It's not due for release until September 15, so I wouldn't expect it to show up until after that date.
