the great thing about sh3 is that you can play the "old" u boats

Sure, I still play SHIII (GWX and Commander). But, I'd still play 688 and Fleet Command and Fighting Steel if I could get them to run on my current winbox machine :D

Often, the older a game gets, the better it feels to play it (I still fire up Janes WWII fighters sometimes too, since it does run under Vista - and would run Janes USAF if it only would - best combat flight sim ever, IMO).

ReallyDedPoet

If the sim is good I will play it, U-Boat, Fleetboat .....

I have been playing SH4 since the beginning :yep:, but still fire up SH3 on occasion.

i still need my german fix. so sh3 gets fired up as well as sh4. i've got to admit it jsut feels ODD being an american sub. german is fine, hell i'd even go japanese (midget subs ftw) but allied? it just feels wrong.

No, but not because it looks old... just waiting for GWX 1.04. :stare:

...and not playing SH4 because waiting for patch 1.4.. :stare::stare:

No sub action at all at the moment and just World in Conflict to pass the time which I think's very overated. A five year old could play it and win... point click kill, point click kill, point click... kill.

American Submarine warfare is the opposite of the battle of the Atlantic. Basically I've found that my odds of surviving the war in the Pacific as being about 70-80 percent. Surviving the war as a U-boat skipper? About 0%. But it's fun to see how far I can get.

And it's nice to see 60 ship convoys once in a while (I scripted my SH3 campaign with looping convoys because the random ones suck IMO). By scripting them I can have very different escort configurations, sometimes with sweepers 10,000 meters away from the main body. And after scripting a couple hundred convoys--there's no way of knowing what you'll run into. The downside is they don't go into ports but just get close and turn around and head back. It'd rare to see the same convoy twice in a career though.

What the hell am I doing wrong then ?!

Out of about a dozen or so carriers only two have survived untill retirement.

You needed to add more responses. I do not play SH3 as I have studied the ATO. Read every book I could get my hands on concerning the ATO and watch Das Boot numerous times. Played the game enhanced by GWX. Now it is time to do much the same in the PTO. Plenty of books already read and more on order. I have a few movies in my library. I have volunteered to restore the USS Torsk which I love doing with great satisfaction. It gets to be more of a study and learning type deal for me. With a bit of imagination playing SH4, attempting to get the full effect without stealing the USS Torsk and taking her for a cruise in the Chesapeake Bay. :o

I'm not having a good time playing as Americans.

The only reason I play SH4 and not SH3 currently is because there are warships instead of boring merchants in it.

I think it's still better than SH4 (except for graphics). Ihope for patch 1.4...

I've been reading WWII sub history since I was about 10. (That's almost 40 years ;) ). Having had the opportunity to speak with many subvets (all American) has been awesome and filled in many of the gaps. The best stories aren't always about things that happened at sea :rotfl: !

@ SteamWake: I've found that in SH4--as long as I'm carefull--I can survive. It's usually a plane that gets me and that's because I got careless and didn't dive for the day like I should have. It doesn't hurt that I've been playing subsims since Gato came out for the C64. Subsims and love=Experience Counts .

Cheers!

I don't play SH3 right now. I was playing it up until I had SH IV patched up to 1.3, then removed it from the hard drive, just to conserve space. My girlfriend's music collection is rather massive.:D

I have a ball on SH 3, but I've had to play the Germans for years, and really wanted back into a virtual fleet boat. It might have more to do with the ocean than the nation or submarines...always wanted to take my Type IX to India playing SH 3.

So, despite me being a bit irked that the add-on is featuring the Kriegsmarine in the USN's game, I may get it, in case I need a U-Boat fix without reinstalling SH3. The reasons I don't play SH 3 right now, have nothing to do with it's appearance. To me, it's still a very pretty game.

No, I want to, but the graphics just look to old now. Bring on the U-boat addon!

Oh, and my second SH3 disc is destroyed as well, found that out when I was going to reinstall and make a vid for JCWolf. "No disk in drive" my backside.

I think SH3 is the only game I have purchased more than once.:D

Yep,

Several reasons.

1. I don't have the hardware to play SH4 at max graphics level.

2. I am waiting for the patch and perhaps the add-on.

3. I'd kind of like to wait for an supermod like GWX, and perhaps an SH4 Cmdr.

I played sh3 from day one until done (year or so), I never went back for the latest major mods.

Playing Sh4 from day 1 in mild campaign modes because I find myself always waiting for this mod or that mod to be finished. Or the next patch.

:sunny: There are some excellent Mods out for SH3... tons of new SHIV to SHIII ports and GUI inhancements, not to mention GWX, which is about to be upgraded to 1.04. SHIII still offers a great challange plus eye candy. If you haven't modded or played it lately, give it a shot.

I second the motion! Graphics isn't the only thing that makes a great sub simulation. I'd rather have a great simulation with last year's graphics than a lousy simulation with orgasmic graphics.

SH4 is a great game with great graphics, but SH3 is equal gameplay-wise in my estimation. Outmoded it is not!

I havent ever played SH3.

I was exposed to subsims with Silent Service for NES. I started subsims seriously with AOD when i was little (had to have been bettween 10-12 years old). I got 688, SH2 and DC after that, fell in love with SH1 when I found a used copy because I love the PTO in all aspects. Im American, and to me its more fascinating warfare than the ETO with Naval battles, island hopping and the like.

I like the mystique of German boats, and am interested in getting back into them. Since Ive fully adapted to SH4 without ever having run SH3 Im wondering if its worth my effort. Ill always fall back on PTO and american boats....But I think I could have fun again deploying out of Norway or France. If im looking for some of the atmosphere and feel of AOD and the option to play Battle of the Atlantic or the Med is SH3 worth it? And to what extent is it mod dependent for useable, realistic play.

Untill then Ill be happily patroling warm south pacific waters.

Hah! I only play SHIII, don't play SHIV.

Something I don't understand is how people die in SHIV - if you can survive SHIII with NYGM then SHIV is a doddle, so much so it's simply not interesting, especially for me as I am something of a 'realism' junkie, and there are still some critical shortcomings in SHIV from my perspective that prevent me from enjoying it. As I've said, the nature of Pacific v Atlantic is that the Pacific needs to be substantially better done for it to hold lasting appeal for me and that simply is not the case at present.

-Pv-
11-07-07, 10:27 PM
Crew die in 4 alright. Hard to ignore the many many posts here to that effect. When set on full realism, just like III, some people say it's too easy, some say it's too hard. None-the-less, the Atlantic-only players are not missing anything in SHIV just as I'm not missing anything in SHIII.

I miss taking a u-boat through the English channel but I'm definately more of a pacific fan. If I lived in Europe i'd probably be an Atlantic man. SH3 being set in the atlantic didn't cause me to whine constantly though. No offense to anyone in particular but I really don't get the dislike for SH4. The last time I played SH3 it crashed as I was rotating my crew, the same CTD that came out of the box....

Yep I play SH3 cant seem to make it passed late '43 however. Never finished the war from start to finish. But I've already done that once in SH4 it was very very hard and had some mighty close calls. Love them both:rock:

Well my aim was to install SH3 (i delete it couple months back) DL GWX 2.0 to see how great they say over there its going to be:roll:. If the graphics are the same with maybe extra clouds and artists impressions of a realistic Uboat where the AI now will be that great with AWESOMENESS that they will detect you 100miles away well enough said. But anyways I want to try it out cause i did like GWX 1.3. Problem is SH3 will no longer load up. Clean install, on a formatted HD running Vista, and game ran fine on vista last time i had it on, patched to 1.4b, Starforce vista patch installed, vista drivers update meaning graphic card. PC spec: 3200, 2gigs of ram, 7800gtx.

Everytime i load SH3 it CTD with no errors. Have deleted, reinstall 3 times!, even went as far as creating a image as the dvd has a few scratches and installed from that, yep made sure all folders and registry is deleted before reinstalling. Nothing seems to work. SH4 runs like a dream and i know why, cause theres no Starforce protection!!! thats why!!!. I now am super paraniod and totally convinced its the Starforce protection.:nope:

Unless some micrale happens no SH3/GWX2 for me.

Last resort just leave it on, when GWX2 is out dL and install and see if SH3 will load.

EDIT: i just notice this is an old thread and iver already answered in it! lol Damn i hate it when that happens. Anyway hopefully some Vista user might solve my problem

Yup, still playing SH3. SH4 was bit of a dissapointment for me. Sure, the graphics are great but it somehow doesn't feel the same as SH3. It takes way too long to get from port to the patrol area and then back and nothing can beat the thrill of beeing at 250+ meters while awoiding depthcharges. And now with GWX2.0 SH3 is better than ever! But when the U-boot addon comes I'll probably play SH3 50% of the time I play subsims and SH4 the other 50%.

I still play SH3, now with the excellent GWX2. To me, the two games are completely different in atmosphere and playability. I'm no graphics junkie: I like the new SH4 graphics, but if I had to choose I would choose SH3 over SH4 for its playability and appeal.

When playing as a U-Boat commander vs a US Sub Commander. It is the other side of the coin.
I too am looking forward to the Atlantic Sharks U-Boat campaign for SH4 and the upcoming UBI add-on.

SH3 is still a very fine subsim and SH4 is maturing nicely and has become an excellent subsim platform.
