What MP Coop modes are available?

I'm considering getting this sim along with a buddy of mine to learn about naval warfare. What sorts of multiplayer coop modes are available? Can we both be in the same sub, or do we each have to have our own sub? Will we know what sorts of computer opponents we'll be up against?

You can either be in your own subs/ships/aircraft, or in the same one. As for the rest of your question, it depends on the mission.
