If you are basically not moving (~2 knots), batteries will last all day. You just need to worry about CO2 buildup. Faster speeds eat up battery exponentially faster. I believe you have something like 15 min of battery at flank speed, if that.

There are a number of mods that change battery endurance, though.

I have verified the game uses battery at historically accurate rates. No need to mod if you want to play with realism. Don't use high speed when you don't need it and you'll always have a generous margin. I've not come close to running out of battery yet. Remember the slower you go on the surface the faster the battery will charge. Keep it topped up and you'll have no trouble.
