I'm planning on buying it off ebay in a week or two, but when I read reviews, it said it was very hard to play without a joystick. I do not have a joystick and don't particularly want to get one. Do I need to get a joystick to play the game with at least mild sucess?

If you want to play any flight sim you need joystick. I have a Saitek Cyborg Evo. A very good stick that doesn't cost too much.

If you try to play IL-2 without one you wno't get very far at all.

Playing a Flight sim without a joystick is like driving a car without the steering wheel.

a normal joystick is the minimal requirement:yep:

Joystick is a must for 1946. Belive me. You won't survive for long with just the keyboard.

I've had one for many years now. It's a good one, but for some reason or another the planes (most notably in 1946) are banking to the right all the time, so you have to keep the stick steady with your hand all the time......

If you really don't want a joystick, you might - just possibly - get away with playing it with a 'playstation-style' joypad, but flight sims without a stick are not easy. Certainly not impossible to play, but you'd be making life uneccessarily difficult for yourself.

The reason a real aircraft has a joystick in it, is because that's the easiest way to control the thing, and if it were possible to fly a plane as well with a mouse or a keyboard, you could be damn sure Airbus would have tried it in real life!

Bite the bullet and get a stick.

There are many Sim games that don't need a joystick.

Imho Flightsims just ain't one. :D

Ya, I think I need one. I tried the IL-2 demo and I got nothing done. But I can't seem to find the joystick you mentioned on bestbuy or futureshop website. Ebay only has one that ships to canada. All the way from the UK. Does anyone know any good online stores I can buy the joystick at that ships to Canada (Preferably not wireless)?

Actually I just saw CFS 3 and might want to get that instead. I read a review on both IL-2 and CFS and they said IL-2 was less approachable than CFS. I have never played dedicated flight sims and want to know which one would be reccommended for me?

I found a Logitech 3D PRO Extreme Joystick at Best Buy for $108 and CFS3 for 20. I'm most likely going to buy CFS3, so, everything sort of fell into place. But I'm still not 100% sure which game to buy.

Don't buy Logitech. they crap out very quickly. The Saitek is a solid performer. Also IL-2 is approachable. I can't speak for CFS3 as I don't have it.

Try amazon.com, saw a couple there.

Listen to XabbaRus I've had my X-52 for over two years and no problems.
And if you go to Saitek's site you can get a remanufactured one for almost half price and with warrenty.

Another member did thIs and is very happy by the way of his P.M.

Look at recent threads on this same subject.

if I had to choose IL 2 1946 and CFS3

I say go for IL2 1946

the flight model is tricky but not hard to get the feeling of it.
once you have the flight model under control, the feeling wont be lost

the game isnt a system hog its quiet friendly for your system and has very nice graphics, the cockpits are very detailed and there are a lot of planes to fly.

the campaigns are alright, some are dull some are very immersive in the way of attacking ground units , intercept a flying formation of transport planes. or you have to take off very quikly as enemy aircrafts are in the area attacking your base.

in case you want some different kind of game you can play Multiplayer.
the multiplayer is really good as most server run missions that contain dogfights, attacking a naval convoy or ground targets.
join up with other players in a flying squadron of bombers and escort them.
the server I play on are very mature, and friendly.

the only reason I have CFS3 installed is for Over Flanders field mod (a WW1 supermod)

I recently found the Saitek Aviator Dual Throttle Joystick at Future Shop for $55. Is this a good joystick and is it better than the Logitech Force 3D Pro?
Which one would be reccomended (leaning on Saitek because of complaint's that logitech sticks aren't that durable)?

I read a review of the Aviator in PC Pilot a while back and they seemed to think it was okay, given that it is not hugely expensive.

I certainly intend to get one at some point, as the twin throttle bit is a useful notion, and I like the idea of being able to map the elevator trim to a sliding control as this is more akin to how trim works in a real aircraft (I currently do that in Condor with my Cyborg EVO joystick throttle and it works well).

One thing I have noticed about the Aviator is that there aren't many programmable buttons (only 5), while the 3D Force Pro has 12. Could I get away with having that few of buttons without using the keyboard much? Because of this fact, I'm leaning on the Logitech now because I don't think I would really use the dual throttles and I would like force feedback.

Any one remember VOW the virtual war on line with IL2?

:hmm:

Whether 5 buttons will do you depends to some degree on what you want to fly I guess, five buttons is more than adequate for a fighter in IL2, however if you want bomber stuff on your stick, you'd be running out of options. But if you want Force Feedback, then you've answered your own question, as the Aviator isn't FF.

WHAT!?!?!?!?!?! :o

I got mine for 25€ from the local store! That sounds like an rip off! :nope:

What comes to getting either CFS3 or IL2, I'd say get the IL2. Over 300 modeled planes with close to 200 as flyable. Also, the engine, graphics and the overall feel is much better in IL2 than in CFS, IMO.

I misread the item name at the Future Shop website when I posted that. It's actually a Logitech FORCE 3D Pro.

That does seem a bit pricy, but I recently learned that I can buy off the Saitek website. So I'm just going to get the Cyborg Evo.
