I have recently purchased this book called “Hitler Triumphant Alternate Decisions of World War 2” edited by Peter G Tsouras and recalls in several chapters how Hitler could have won the war and it was in one of those chapters that focused on what I like to call the ‘Spanish Gambit.’
The chapter talks about how Axis forces could have effectively sealed off the Med turning it into an allied lake leaving the allied surface fleets at the peril of the U-boat. Meaning no chances of re-enforcements - forcing Malta to surrender in July 1942. And the axis forces (Germany, Italy, and somewhat to a lesser extent Franco’s) did this by attacking and capturing the rock of Gibraltar. (Ranging from the bombardment of Gibraltar, to Churchill’s relief convoy and other elements).
An interesting feature of this is how closely it runs to reality. The account of German planning is accurate along with the preparation of troops. The diplomatic meetings between the Germans, Spanish and Italians really took place. The British loss of Gibraltar would have had some quite major consequences and could have happened with a small tweaking of events (see above).
The chapter recalls how the axis COULD have done this in several stages which im thinking of turning into missions, over even a campaign – (although im not quite sure how to conduct a campaign with the mission editor, - anyone any ideas ?). (Whilst trying to keep it as close a possible to the chapter.)
Do you lot think you would play this? Either in SP or MP?
