Playing mission when i spot a task force so i sneak in destory 2 passenger ships and 1 destroyer when a second depth charges me oops missed him i take some stern damage come to find out now i can't turn so i figure i better kill him no aft tubes can't turn have to sit and get lucky finally i did 3 fore tube shots at 500 over kill but wanted to be sure :up: so i high tail it in only direction i can straight sit out in the middle of no where and speed up time so i can get the repairs done all done now i still can't turn so i look outside the boat no rudder!?!?!?!?! :damn: what am i to do is there a way to turn one screw and not the other so i can turn that way or am i going to have to reload a save?

Check out the Repairs screen. If your rudder is destroyed, tough luck.

I had a problem with engines being destroyed :o I was able to survive (I still don't know how I managed that) but was basically dead in the water.

Repair crew may be able to fix the rudder eventually.

Im not sure if you have to be surfaced to do this or not (similar to deck gun).

If it (the rudder) is truely destroyed well... your screwed.

Happened to me, too. No fix by repair crew. Had to load an earlier save.

I had this happen last night. From my first encounter with Fubuki class DD's and it seems that not only were they sleek and fast torpedo shooters but they also seem to have far better than average ASW gear compaired to other DD's I've seen escorting.
I went under 200 or so thinking I was safe but I heard them start pinging me and making depth charge runs. They didn't kill me but they beat up my stern tubes, shaft, and destroyed my rudder. I had ext view so I saw that it was indeed missing. I was able to repair the shaft after they left but the rudder wasn't even selectable to repair.
I was wondering if there was a way to control the boat by dropping one screw in and out of gear or giving one engine more or less power... I couldn't find any

No darnit. Ive been asking for this since SH3.

i agree, individual selectable drives would be much more realistic, and it would come in handy at times like this.

growing up on and around twin engine private fishing boats, use of separate engines is used all the time. heck, even in an airplane while on the ground. it would be really nice to have this luxury in SH4.

SHIV team has repeatedly stated they have no intention of adding differential engines feature. Save often and reduce your risk posture.

I know they did much to my dismay ;)

Why are they refusing to do this? Did the subs in RL have this feature? If they did why the hell shouldn't they include it? This is a sim afterall. IIRC they used this on surface ships when their rudder was out of action, so I'm guessing subs did too?

yeah i have sh3 and was shocked it didn't have the ability to stop power to one screw for faster turns or such. I hoped sh4 would have it maybe someone can mod it in then us rudderless peeps can limp back to port :D or maybe even able to call in a tug or something to tow us back. You say save more, bad thing is i try to be more realistic and only save at port unless real life calls. It was a really nice run too sunk 5 freighters before the task force and 2 passenger ships and 3 destroyers in the task force its always nice to setup in a task force so you can hit a freighter with fore tubes and destroyer with aft tubes.

Because they were devoting their time to the million and one other things that are in this Simulation.

And if anyone is contemplating a smart*** reply, let me caution against it.

I know they (the devs) are busy doing the best they can for this game/sim, but its a bit confusing why they wouldn't include a feature (that wouldn't be too hard to do, right?) that would really save your skin in a tight situation. This isn't a smarta** reply, just a relevent question....

Perhaps it could be included in a future patch/mod (probably too late for 1.3, perhaps 1.4 - or am I just being optomistic lol).

It was just a wish, not a demand.

I can imagine the coding for off axis thrust would have been a nightmare.

I was wondering who would show up.

Actually this is a private forum, owned, operated and paid for by a private individual.

If you don't like that, there is the rest of the internet you can play on and ignore the rules all you want.

Not really. Coding, like any art, is all about cutting corners to achieve some stated goal. Ofcourse you could do it the difficult way and actually simulate the effect using physics and whatnot. But it would be way easier (and no effectual difference really) to just predefine some model based upon relative thrust for the left and right engines that equals a given rudder settings.

Like this (assuming left rudder is a negative value and right rudder is a positive value):

While lenginerpm != renginerpm {

If lenginerpm < renginerpm {
rudderdegreetemp == (renginerpm - lenginerpm) / somedegreevalue
rudderdegree == rudderdegreetemp - (rudderdegreetemp * 2)
}
else {
rudderdegree == (lenginerpm - renginerpm) / somedegreevalue
}
}

Took me two minutes :D
